Second hand smoke

I am home visiting my parents this weekend who are both smokers. How harmful will it be to my baby (at 5weeks) to be in the same home with them for the weekend? Are most studies of the dangers of second hand smoke conducted on individual's that spend extensive time with smokers?

I'm just scared to miscarry.

I think any study is going to say there's a small increased risk, but without looking at the data I'd suspect it would be pretty minimal in your case since it's limited exposure over a short period of time. Can you feign allergies and ask them to go outside or give yourself an excuse to step out? If the weather is nice I'd maybe try to stay outside as much as possible.  The smell of smoke was such a trigger for morning sickness for me, I'm so sympathetic over here!

  • Should be fine. I've been reading "Expecting Better" and there's a whole section on smoking and second hand smoke. If it were me though, I wouldn't stay inside. I'm more likely to go way out of my way to avoid a teensy risk though. I guess just telling them you're pregnant isn't the right thing to do yet?
  • Thanks ladies. I have asked them to smoke outside and said that I forgot my allergy medication. So far it has not been an issue, they are going to the basement to smoke, which is far enough away from me. I just feel really paranoid about everything because this is my first pregnancy.
  • @kheggaton the way I look at it is try and do everything you can to reduce the exposure, and know that a little bit for a short time is very likely no big deal. It's good that they're going downstairs and not questioning your reason!
