Babywearing while pregnant

Any mamas wear toddlers with their bump?

I fly alone frequently with my almost 2 year old (so I can visit family longer than the week DH can get off), and usually throw her in the Ergo while getting through the airport. We fly on May 8th for the first time since I've been pregnant; is it safe to back carry while pregnant? Or am I better off gate checking my stroller? No way I'm letting my free-spirited DD out walking :D

I've heard mixed info on this so wanted some more opinions!

Re: Babywearing while pregnant

  • My 2 year old is about the size of a three year old so I don't wear her at all anymore... but when we fly I always use the GoGo Babyz car seat transporter because she gets her own seat on the plane. It hooks the car seat on and glided through the airport with her strapped in! It's amazing!

We only wear when she gets tired hiking or at the airport now too (she's 90 percentile, so also big!).
I just strap the car seat onto our bags, part of the reason I like wearing her; flying alone I need my hands free! We've got a great routine down now since we fly 8ish times a year, but this pregnancy is shaking things up a bit lol
  • I wear my 20 month old on my back in a backpack carrier and the strap goes under my belly! Works great so far!
  • I've never done babywearig while pregnant but I do go backpacking and camping with quite a bit of weight on my back. It probably depends on the weight of your toddler and how comfortable it is for you!  <3
  • I had to stop wearing my 10 month old already. She isn't comfortable with a back carry yet and wrapping her above the belly hurts my back. I miss wearing her but dh likes getting to be close to her when we walk/hike.

I wear my almost 2 year old on my back with a cloth and he is above 90th percentile as well. So far so good at 21 weeks but I would have to stop around 28 weeks, personally.
  • I would say that as long as it is comfortable for you (no cramping, pulling feeling or bleeding after carrying) then continue mama!
  • You might want to consult your doctor to see if they are ok with you carrying weight on your back for extended periods of time.

My 2 year old is also a giant at 3 feet tall and 30 pounds I wouldn't want to carry him (I doubt he would let me) but if he was more compliant I would put him on  my husbands back, not mine. I think the waist strap on the ergo would bother me. Outside of that, I would probably just purchase a cheapie umbrella stroller. The $15 kind that you won't gaf about if you have to leave it behind or it gets mangled.

  • I still carry my 2 year old. He's about 26-27lbs, not a big guy. You can wear the waist strap up under your breasts, above the bump if that's more comfortable. I like to use a toddler worthy ring sling for short ups and an onbu for longer wearing. Baby wearing while pregnant is safe as long as you don't have any special restrictions or experience any negative symptoms. Feel free to ask me anything.

I'd die if I tried to wear my one (2 in August) year old. He is the size of a 3 year old and half my height. 35 lbs and 35 inches. I just use the umbrella stroller

I've worn my almost 2 year old multiple times.. still fairly comfortable although I'll say the ring sling is more comfortable than the SSC back carry for me.

This was at 16 weeks pregnant

    This was around 19 weeks.
