Birth class if C-section is mandatory?

Is there any reason to look into a birth class if I know I have to have a C-section for medical reasons?

  • Only if they cover scheduled c sections and you prefer a class or you want to vbac in the future,  but want to learn about vaginal birth right now. When it was me, i read a book specifically about c section.
  • The class I took with DS covered prenatal care, birth, and caring for baby after birth. I think it covered both vaginal and c-sections. I would check to see what is covered in the class. If it's just birth and just vaginal, then you probably don't need it but the other topics could be very helpful.

Interesting. My hospital makes you take a completely different class about taking baby home and caring for them.

Interesting! Ours was done through our local health unit and was a full weekend. Our hospital does a tour when you pre-register but I don't think they do any classes or anything other than the nurse watching you bathe the baby after the first night

Mine too. They don't make you but they have the child birth class and then also a class on breast feeding, a class on newborn care and a class on baby safety. They also offer a birthing class specifically for people who have had kids before but want a refresher.
  • @wineren is it a part of John Muir?

@lilpoots No, it's part of Providence Health. It's St. Patrick's Hospital in Montana. There are two hospitals in town and the other, Community, had been the only one with a maternity center for thirty years or so until about two years ago so I think they try to offer a lot of incentives. Community does classes too but not as many offerings.
  • @wineren I was wondering because your class set up sounds exactly like my hospital which is a part of John Muir. The classes are technically through the women's health center, but it's directly funded by the hospital. Only other option in the area is Kaiser.

@lilpoots I think they're a pretty good set of classes. I signed DH and I up for all of them because I could and because they're free. They also have an infant massage class for after baby is born that I'm pretty sure I'm going to take. :-)
  • @wineren oh wow. I wish they were free here. Some of them are, but birth, after care, cpr(non certified) and many others are fee based.

Same here! Our hospital's birth, breastfeeding, and baby classes are all around $100 each. The only free thing is the L&D ward tour.

That sucks! They're free at both hospitals here. The tour is included with the child birth class or you can sign up separately. They also have a class for grandparents and classes for siblings. I think it makes sense if only to get more people to go and have a better idea of what to expect. I still would have signed up if it cost money but I would have thought about it more. :-/
  • The birthing classes range from $65 to $250 depending on if it is a refresher online course, a basics class or a low intervention birth. Their carseat specialist appointments,  the new mom program and the breastfeeding clinic is free.
