  • @KariAnn323 It's a little funny you should mention x-wing, becasue MH was just talking about how he thinks he chose the "wrong" Star Wars game. He chose Armada a while ago, but now it seems like x-wing is way more popular.

    @pebbledam I *might* be a little nerdy myself  ;)

  • @msmeeseeks, DH and I watched the first episode of Handmaid's Tale last week. It was good but very intense, as you'd expect. I think we'll continue watching but it definitely wasn't one we were tempted to binge. One episode at a time is plenty.

My Hulu first love right now is Harlots. That one I did binge! And now I watch the new ones the day they come out, which is pretty rare for me.
  • @doxiemoxie212 - Is Zika in Hawaii?
We are Zika-free over here! October is usually pretty nice, although sometimes it can be the start of our rainy season.

  • @sunniegrly @AlohaKumu no zika, but it's more than a 6-hour flight from NY unfortunately, which given how much time DH can realistically take off work just doesn't make sense. It's on my list when (please let it be a when lol) we move back to CA.
  • @KariAnn323 @Cricket648 @pebbledam @Augusta108 I would like to join your nerd wives group. I am certainly at least a little nerdy. DH does 40k, D&D (in many variations), and also collects waaaay too much nerd stuff. Our finished basement is covered in autographs, dragon statues, paintings with fairies in them, and swords. Plus he has a very realistic Darth Vader costume he sometimes wears at cons.
  • @doxiemoxie212 - Dangit, I missed the part about not wanting a long flight.

I was going to watch it and my mom told me not to for this reason. So off the queue it goes.

Anyone watch Preacher on Hulu? We just finished the first season and I was on the fence at first but toward the end of the season got really into it.

Yeah huge TW for anyone not familiar with the story - infertility is a huge part of it.  And so far they are pretty much portraying all the IF women like frigid bitches.  Maybe they will change that, but we'll see.

That being said, if you can separate yourself from that particular aspect, the show is wonderfully acted, directed, scripted, and produced.  Definitely one of the best new shows I've seen in a while.

YES. They pretty much portray (and exaggerate) all of the anger, desperation, and irrational jealousy while downplaying the sorrow and humanity of the IF women. I'm watching it like "I connect with her and get her, but I think they want me to blindly hate her and think she's a monster..."

It is beautifully made down to the soundtrack. They made some amazing casting and directing choices. Just make sure you know getting into it, the majority of the plot revolves around IF/pregnancy, and there are some pretty emotional scenes regarding loss and IF.

  • @antoto I totally agree - great show and the acting caliber is excellent.

It is definitely a show a lot of ladies on here/struggling with IF may want to avoid since the overall story line is that much of human kind has become infertile and the handful of women who can have children are basically enslaved to serve the leaders. The women who are not enslaved generally are complicit in the new regime and also happen to be infertile.

This is kind of a WTF Wednesday thing but it's not Wednesday so it's going here.

When I left the gym this morning there was a girl taking up the entire bench next to my locker. There were naked sweaty people all around her and she was sitting there eating egg salad.

Now if you are one of those people who likes egg salad, that's your right and I respect that. But note that a lot of people find egg salad super gross smelling. Also I don't get why anyone would eat anything in the gym locker room. If someone has to eat at the gym, there are benches near the front desk. Side benefit of using those are it doesn't come in the way of me getting my stuff out of my locker.
  • Ugh - another random WTF moment... today at lunch, there were four of us working on the crossword (we always do the NY Times puzzle in the lunch room). When we finished, the one guy (older) was like, "Well, this is a sign the times are changing" and then went on to clarify he meant "the three of you sitting there, none of you planning on having children". I blankly got up and walked away - I didn't know what to say! He didn't mean it in any sort of negative way, but I was like, I'm only 32, only been with the company four months, why the F would anyone assume that I didn't want kids??? Do I look barren??
  • @vflux33 That's gross. I would never want to eat in a gym locker room. Ew.

@Sailing_Mama Da fak? I would have straight up asked why he assumes you don't want children. That's such a weird thing to say.
  • @vflux33 that is so gross! I don't like egg salad, but the part that really grosses me out is the eating in the gym locker room.

@Sailing_Mama WTAF? Why would anyone say that, ever? Let alone to some one you don't really know. (Side note, I think it's awesome that you do the crossword at lunch as a Group. seems fun)

@Sailing_Mama - WTF!? I swear that some people literally don't think before garbage starts coming out of their mouths.

  • @vflux33 Locker room food? No thank you. Definitely not a fan of egg salad either.

@Sailing_Mama WTAF? And of course you can't call him out because you're relatively new and it would be "over reacting." But I wouldn't have to fight so hard not to call out that rudeness. Like excuse me? Do I know you? What do you know about my child bearing desires? And how is that any of your business?

@Sailing_Mama That is some major BS. Wow.
  • @Sailing_Mama that's some sexist isht right there. Maybe it's the cinco de mayo talking but I think he meant, "Ohhhh ladies working... working ladies don't care about having families or they wouldn't be working!" Screw that guy.

@Sailing_Mama - In a similar vein, my mom had a PROFESSOR come up to her in law school and ask "Who will raise the children?" Um...yeah dude, she did. And is a total badass. She fed me a lot of Tyson chicken strips and Rice-A-Roni for dinner, but I lived. Men just need to learn to STFU sometimes.

  • @sunniegrly I know! I don't know if it makes it better or worse that I know he honestly didn't mean anything negative, and thought it was great that we were all progressive. And I know at least one of the others is child free, although I don't know if it was by choice or not; the other I'm not sure about her plans, but she's only 35 or so, so definitely not out of the game.
  • Benevolent sexism is still sexism, y'all. I'm just saying.
  • @doxiemoxie212 I know - it's almost worst, to be honest
  • @Sailing_Mama it IS worse. It's like, oh no, I love women, I just think you guys need extra special protections because you're very delicate and basically children who can't protect yourselves!

@augusta108, if you like Harlots and are looking for something to read, The Crimson Petal and the White is really good.  It's dark, especially at the end, but it's one of my favorites.  I think BBC did a mini-series of it as well.
  • @zwink1, thanks for the recommendation! I like pretty much anything about womens' lives in 18th-19th century London. I've heard of the book but I didn't know there was a mini-series of it. I'll have to look for both!
