Car Seats for Extended Cab Truck

We have an SUV for our primary vehicle, but my husband drives an extended cab Silverado, and our daughter (2.5) currently rides in a Graco My Ride 65 in the truck. It's a very comfy seat for her, but quite frankly it's huge. And FF, it still reclines quite a bit, so we have the seat in the middle because it's too big to sit behind my husband, and it's really too tight on the passenger side, too -- she doesn't have much leg room even with the front seat scooted up (and I have zero leg room in the front seat).

My husband does do pick-up most days, so he will have to be able to have our older daughter, and our infant daughter, in the car come September. So I'm looking for recommendations on a new convertible seat that is slimmer and able to sit up straighter and can more comfortably fit behind the passenger seat in an extended cab truck, as well as beside an infant seat. Either the convertible or the infant seat is going to have to go in the middle of the truck -- my husband doesn't have room for a seat directly behind him. Any thoughts? We looked at a Graco Slim Fit this weekend and we think it might work, but I wanted to explore all options.

She rides in a Contender in my Acadia, and we actually just had the lightbulb thought of trying to switch the My Ride and Contender and see if the Contender works better in his truck. But the Contender is still pretty big, so I'm not confident it will work.

My husband says this just means he needs to upgrade to a crew cab truck lol I just laugh in his face. :)

  • For a forward facing only seat, we like the Harmony Defender. It's a long last seat for five point harness, converts to booster, narrows side to side, cheap, and easy to use. You'll have to double check the minimums to see if your 2.5 year old is tall/heavy enough, though.

  • I've only used the Britax Advocate (from 6 months to 4 years) and the Britax Frontier (4 years through now) in our vehicles.  My husband drives a Toyota Tacoma extended cab, and we've had no issues with leg room or the seat being too big for the front passenger seat comfort.

  • Also, the FB group Car Seats For The Littles is awesome about working with people to find properly fitting seats for their cars. Check them out, too.
