Am I worried over nothing? 12 week scan - BPD measurement

hey ladies!  So I had my 12 week ips screen/test done today (I am 12 weeks 1 day today).  The NT (nuchal translucency) came back at 1mm which is great!  However the BPD measurement (biparietal diameter) came back small.  It was only 1.8 cm (18mm) and everything I've read said that it should be in the 20s.  This can be an indication of spina bifida.  I won't get my blood test back for a while and there is still a second test I have to get done at 15 weeks.. then I get those results :(. My husband has a cousin with SB on his side and I'm just wondering if anyone else saw their measurements for the BPD and if they were around the same?  Am I crazy??

  • Spina Bifida is not exactly genetic. It's more so spontaneous. My OB explained that to me because Spina Bifida runs in my direct side of the family. I wouldn't worry too much. It's not off by a whole lot honestly.

  • @virginiaham- I haven't spoken to my midwife yet because by the time she would have gotten the results, her office was closed and doesn't open again until Monday.   @VLillyV that's good to know.  I don't know why they would say that then.. weird! We had to meet with a genetic counsellor when I was pregnant with my dd due to some spots on her heart.. and when we told them our family history she mentioned a correlation between the SB a risk rate for us in our pregnancies, but maybe she was being over cautious?   Im probably just paranoid but the measurement was like less than 2nd percentile and most cases of SB happen below the 5th percentile.

I'm so sorry for the long wait until you can talk to her.  FWIW, from radiopaedia (radiology reference for medical professionals) BPD is accurate in predicting gestational age from 14-20 weeks.  From that I wonder if it's even a measurement they would worry about right now.

  • I was curious so I looked at my medical records online from my NT scan. I read through it all and I don't even see BPD listed. So going off what @virginiaham found, maybe it's nothing to consider at this point?

  • When you're talking about 10 or so milimeters, false results can be very common.  So I wouldn't panic yet (easy to say, rough to do).

  • There are some places that measure things differently, maybe this place the measurement is considered normal at 2.0? Prayers for healthy results ❤
