High Risk Check-in: April

I thought this would be a good idea for those of us deemed "high risk" in this pregnancy or previous pregnancies, or if you are receiving extra monitoring for whatever reason.

How far along are you?

Why are you considered high-risk / getting increased monitoring?

What type of additional testing, monitoring will you be getting?

Any questions / rants / raves?

GTKY: Are you taking/planning to take any prenatal classes?

Why are you considered high-risk / getting increased monitoring? Severe IUGR and the baby has congenital heart disease.

What type of additional testing, monitoring will you be getting? I have growth scans every 2-3 weeks and will have a follow up fetal echocardiogram in May.  Depending on the cause of the IUGR, I could be at risk for problems associated with placental dysfunction like pre-e and placental abruption.

Any questions / rants / raves? Nothing comes to mind at the moment

GTKY: Are you taking/planning to take any prenatal classes? We took a tour of the hospital that I thought I would deliver at, but now I've learned I have to deliver somewhere else.  I'm not sure what my labor/delivery will look like yet, so I haven't really planned to take a class for that.  I figure I will just go with the flow when the time comes.  I would like to take a breastfeeding and infant CPR class, but I haven't signed up yet.

  • I think this is a great idea @SpongeWorthy!

Why are you considered high-risk / getting increased monitoring? Fibroids (I have a large one that's potentially blocking my cervix) and now my recent GD diagnosis.

What type of additional testing, monitoring will you be getting? I have monthly visits to my MFM to measure the fibroid growth. I guess I can add GD monitoring to the list as well. Luckily, my regular OB believes my current MFM can handle both potential complications.

Any questions / rants / raves? SPD continues to wreak havoc on my body!

GTKY: Are you taking/planning to take any prenatal classes? Yep. My husband and I have a childbirth class at our delivering hospital in May that comes with a tour of the maternity ward. I also want to make sure we're comfortable with infant CPR. A newborn class would probably be good as we're both first-timers with very little experience with babies.

Why are you considered high-risk / getting increased monitoring?
I had a previous DVT in my left leg from almost 4 years ago. (Not something I got during a pregnancy it was just really random) My OB is concerned about me possibly having GD as well. She thinks LO is measuring bigger than he/she should be. I take the glucose test next week to find out. Blah...

What type of additional testing, monitoring will you be getting?
I'm currently taking lovenox (a blood thinner) My dosage may be changing once I go in to see my MFM. Not sure what the next course of action will be. I may start seeing a hemotolagist as well. We will be getting a level 2 anatomy scan at MFM's office next week. They will be checking and keeping an eye out for blood clots in my uterus. I'll also find out how LO is measuring.

Any questions / rants / raves?
I'm currently up in the air and I'm a little annoyed my OB waited to send me to a specialist after so long. I've had to do my own research on DVT's during pregnancy so that I am making sure to get proper care.  I'm just annoyed that I'm not getting enough information about how my labor and delivery will go. Everything has been so vague. Every time I ask questions she tells me we will discuss it when the time gets closer and you see the specialist. It has been frustrating. I just can't wait to see the MFM and hopefully get some answers. I don't even know who will be delivering my baby.

GTKY: Are you taking/planning to take any prenatal classes?
We haven't signed up for anything. I was thinking of an infant CPR class for myself, DH already knows how since he needs it for work.

    How far along are you?

27 weeks, yay for 3rd tri.

Why are you considered high-risk / getting increased monitoring?
Chronic hypertension, overweight, previous c-sections complicating current pregnancy and history of pre-e.

What type of additional testing, monitoring will you be getting?
I currently see my OB every 2 weeks for blood pressure/urine checks.  I see my MFM at 28 weeks and 32 weeks for growth scans and then I will see him weekly for NSTs and quick ultrasounds.  They also may do another test to see if my placenta has turned into placenta accreta. Baby girl is measuring "ok" right now, but are concerned about how big she will be if we need to deliver early.

Any questions / rants / raves?
so at my last growth scan, the tech took a very long time looking at my placenta and while she isn't allowed to say anything, the radiologist report says "possible placenta accreta, follow up 4 weeks via ultrasound and possible other imaging". Isn't that something they should have called about?!

GTKY: Are you taking/planning to take any prenatal classes?
nahhhh. lol. I will be having my final c-section and know what to expect. We are tossing around the idea of DD2 taking a "sibling" class our pediatric clinic offers, as she has been the "baby" for 3 years.

Why are you considered high-risk / getting increased monitoring? 6 losses, including one child with a congenital heart defect and pre-term labor and/or incompetent cervix with all of my children, all pre term deliveries

What type of additional testing, monitoring will you be getting? I get seen once a week, cervical checks/ultrasounds, injections once week

Any questions / rants / raves? No

  • @lanie1000 I'm sorry to hear about your GD diagnosis, but I'm glad your MFM can handle both issues for you.  I also have a large fibroid, but it must be out of the way or something because the doctors are not concerned at all about it.

@Poppyseed72017 I'm sorry your OB has been dragging her feet.  I hope the MFM can give you the answers you are looking for.  Let us know how your appointment goes!

@kghusker1003 That is disappointing about your possible placenta accreta.  Maybe they didn't call because they couldn't see the placenta well enough for a definitive diagnosis?  I don't know much about the condition, but it sounds like they can't really do anything to treat it.  FX that its not placenta accreta!

@CTRMommyof4 What kind of injections are you getting?  My baby also has a congenital heart defect - a VSD and either truncus arteriosus or pulmonary atresia.  I hope things are going smoothly in this pregnancy so far for you!
