This is a weekly check-in for those in their 2nd trimester: weeks 14 through the end of week 27.

Congrats to all the strong ladies who have made it this far! It's such a great feeling and we've all accomplished so much! We are now 1 week closer to the end of this especially long journey we call "infertility."

Please post below a little about yourself, how many beans you have growing inside, if you have found out the sex(es) and what your EDD is. Please also let us know how far you've made it on your journey and when your next appointment is and what for. If I'm missing anyone from this list, or you are new to the 2nd tri, please let me know and I will add you.

Please let us know when you have graduated to 3rd trimester so that I can update our list!

Re: 2nd Trimester Check-In: Week of April 3rd

  • Happy Monday Everyone!
21w.1d here with a little boy! We've 90% decided on the name Parker, middle name William (my dad). Feeling pretty good right now other than a bit of afternoon fatigue lately. I prepped a whole bunch of healthy snacks on Saturday to make sure I'm bringing enough to work, I think that's half my problem. Otherwise feeling great - still loving sleeping through the night!
We ordered nursery furniture, I got a coat of paint on last night in the nursery and got some great deals on accessories/shelving from my cousin (as she works at a home store). Then my parents gave us the money to purchase the crib which was great. It was a good weekend - I think I'll have most of the nursery done this weekend - it'll be so nice to have that room actually finished instead of it being the room that just has random stuff piled in it!

    QOTW:
Hostess gifts for your shower(s) - are these a thing in your area? If yes, what are you getting/doing for your hostess(es)? - It's not an actual thing here but, as I do my flower arrangements on the side, I usually use flowers to say thank you for a lot of different things and plan to that like I did for my wedding shower.

@JWatt5  - Parker is on our short list :)

AFM - I'm 23w6d, I CANNOT believe that viability is TOMORROW!!! I also can't believe that, before this whole process, I had no idea that was even a thing. How much we learn! I have a growth scan tomorrow and can't wait to see our little one again. I've been so spoiled with ultrasounds that I'm sad this will be the last one for quite awhile (I think).

We are heading to North Carolina for the weekend to visit friends and I'm looking forward to a weekend away! We alternate visiting each other so we figured we had better get one in before the baby comes.

I have a cold - I'm not a happy camper. I just want to BREATHE!!!

Edited to include the QOTW! I've always given hostess gifts - not sure what I'm doing yet but definitely something!

  • Hi everyone! I am currently 19 weeks 4 days with a little boy. I have my anatomy scan on Wednesday and I am both really excited but also slightly nervous for it... just praying that everything looks okay! I ordered my nursery furniture this weekend and also got my breast pump through my insurance so I'm glad to be able to check those off of my list!

@JWatt5 I love the name! We have a short list with 4 names on it but are having a really today tough time deciding on one

@byrneme Yay for viability! I hope you feel bettef

@Colleen0516 Glad the shower went great! You look super adorable!

QOTW: I treated the girls who planned my bridal shower to lunch and gave them a little something so I'll probably do something similar for my mom and mother in law who are planning this one.

Hi! I'm 15 weeks along with a baby boy.  Our next appt is 4/18. We are excited to see him since the last appt was just a heart rate check. I know he's grown so much since then.

@byrneme yay for viability!  That's wonderful!

@Colleen0516 glad the shower went well.

QOTW: it's not done to my knowledge around here; however, I want to do something for those who plan the shower. Not sure what, though.

  • I'm 23weeks with a little girl. I had an OB appointment today which went well. HR was 145 and baby is growing like crazy. I found out today that my OB unfortunately doesn't offer an alternative to the glucose test so at 28 weeks I'll be completing that.  I'm a little disappointed but that's okay.
We finished painting the babies room and the furniture is set up. We will need to get a glider because our existing recliner won't fit. Im just happy to have the room set up and start decorating!

I found the most hilarious thing on fit pregnancys website. Instead of the typical comparison of baby size to fruit, they compare it to a bunch of obscure things! This was mine this week
Another week was a French press! Thought someone else may get a kick out of it!

QOTW: I plan on treating my mom and sister in law to manicure and pedicure as a thank you for the shower.

@stars2016 wow you were able to get your breast pump so early from your insurance! Mine doesn't allow us to get the breast pump til 2 months prior to due date. That's awesome though. I'd rather have more time to familiar myself with it!

@colleen0516 I'm glad your shower went well! You look so great! Sorry your sciatica is still bugging you! Have you talked to your Dr about it?

@byrneme yay for viability! It's so exciting! Have fun on your little getaway!

@jwatt5 love the name Parker! That was a top boy name for us! Sleeping through the night has been glorious lately! So nice not to have to wake up every few hours to go to the bathroom! I'll enjoy it while it lasts!

  • Hello ladies. Today I'm 17 weeks with one little boy. Things are going well. I caught a stomach bug last week and was out Thurs-Saturday. I'm feeling much better but still sore and tired. Baby seemed to be fine, checked his hb a few times. I kept hydrated and just rested. I even got a few kicks yesterday so I'm sure he's ok. Otherwise just chugging along. We're going to start painting the nursery this weekend, very exciting! And I want to finalize my decision on my glider so I can send that to my dad, he's offered to purchase it.

QOTW: I haven't heard of this but I would likely do something for whomever is planning my shower. I haven't heard anyone offer to do it. Should someone have offered by now??

  • Hello!
I am 14 weeks 6 days with one little girl (via IVF/FET). Due 9/27

We found out gender via CCS/PGS testing so knew from our 1st Ultrasound (they won't tell you until then). We also did Maternit21 testing and again confirmed she was a ok and a girl. :)

Having lots of fun with heartburn, headache, back pain, tension headaches, tired, sooo much mucus in my face, neck pain..etc Lots of food aversions plus can't have really anything with much spice. Trying to get into the chiropractor because my neck pain is waking me up at night and causing tension headaches.

Having our birthing class is what is up next...and then we are lucky to get a 16 week US 4/14.

I have been working on a registry...kinda frustrating as things seem to not be in stock so quickly.

QOTW: Hostess gifts for your shower(s) - are these a thing in your area? If yes, what are you getting/doing for your hostess(es)? Yes..I gave hostess gifts to those that planned my wedding showers. Not sure what I will get for my Hostess this time...last time I gave clutches with gift certificates in them. I think I will likely be having 2 showers...1 where I live and 1 likely where all my besties live (I moved back home a few years ago).

  • Hey ladies! 18 weeks with a little boy! :)
So pretty exciting, on Friday Eric was able to feel baby boys kicks. They were particularly strong that day. He was able to feel him again tonight though so I think it'll just get more and more common. It's early from my understanding, but I'm quite thin so maybe that's part of it, I dunno. We went to the baby show here in town and oh my goodness I'm in stroller overwhelm. So many to choose from and features from each of them that I just want to combine into one super stroller haha! I've also started working on our registry (which is mostly really a shopping list for myself since I don't think we'll be getting a shower) and that too is overwhelming. So much stuff to buy. We made a budget spreadsheet in excel... oh man haha. Crazy! We're categorizing them based on needs/priority, so hopefully we don't need it all at once, yikes.
QOTW: No hostess to shower me, so no gift needed I guess haha.

@JWatt5 - awww Parker is my nephew's name. Great choice! :)

@byrneme - viability and growth scan today! YAY! sorry you have a cold though.

@Colleen0516 - so glad the shower went well and you enjoyed. Yay for being able to decorate the nursery. So exciting!

@Stars2016 - wow you're a week ahead of me due date wise, but lightyears ahead in planning haha. Yay for nursery furniture though. I'm going to need to get on all that as soon as we move I suppose.

@Kp214 - oh gosh, ya, It'll be really fun for you to see baby. I'd be so so excited! 2 weeks to go! :)

@ARB425 - ugh, sorry about the glucose test... I'm sure I'll probably end up having to do it to, but haven't gotten that far yet...

@latershrader - ugh ugh ugh!!! I had a stomach bug too. No fun. But exciting you're feeling kicks/movement!!!

@BecauseLove - yay for baby girl! :) I can't handle spice anymore either and I find it very annoying haha. I love spice or dishes that are flavorful. Oh well... small price to pay! :)

    @ARB425 Love it!
@BecauseLove Hang in there, it'll get better soon!

So as soon as I said "no one has offered to throw us a shower" my work bestie asked me if she could do one for me at work. I'm so excited and grateful. I'm hoping my sister will want to throw one for me too, only because I have non-work friends that would want to attend. But I'm not holding my breath, just in case.

  • @oxinfree the stroller choices are overwhelming! I watched so many YouTube videos and researched like a crazy person. In the end we went with a totally different brand than what I thought we wanted. We spent an afternoon at babies r us trying every stroller! We landed on the Chicco bravo trio travel system. A lot of the folding mechanisms on others felt very flimsy and I was worried about it eventually just breaking. Some we couldn't even figure out how to fold down!
If you are on Facebook check out some buy/sell groups. You may get lucky to find some items used and a ton cheaper. It's overwhelming how many things are out there to buy for babies but we are just trying to be as simple as possible or find multi purpose items.
  • Thanks everyone - we love the name Parker so far. Boy names were hard for us for some reason (DH has a last name that you just shouldn't use a "B" name for - so our top two of Ben and Blake were out lol).

@byrnem - How did you scan go? Yah for reaching viability - I have that day noted in my calendar at work, it's exciting!

@Colleen0516 - you're shower looks like it was great! Can't wait to see your nursery when it's all decorated.

@Stars2016 - that's one thing we can't get in Canada with most of our insurance plans - no breast pump. I'm going to borrow my sisters. She was nice and bought all new tubes and stuff for it.

@ARB425 - I love burritos!! and sleeping - DH has had a cold so he's been in the spare room. Finny (dog) and I have been sprawled out on the bed loving life  haha. Part of me misses DH but part of me is sad he's coming back tonight haha I'm sleeping so well.

@latershrader - I hope you are feeling better!! My glider is still my fav part of the nursery - I sit in it often.

@BecauseLove - registries make me tired lol Sooo much stuff and yes, I feel the same that things come and go too fast. I've bought a couple things I should have left for the shower but I really wanted a certain print or something specific.

@oxinfree - The great stroller debate - I researched until my eyes crossed, picked on then actually went to look and totally changed. Ended up spending more than we planned but I'm happy now. I went from the Baby Jogger CityMiniGT to the Uppababy cause it could stand but the wheels were for better for city (then realized it stands on the handlebar which I didn't like) to the Baby Jogger City Select. It's big but I needed the sturdy wheel for the cottage and walking at home since I live in the boonies. I like it's versatility too. I felt a wave of relief once the stroller was picked haha.

We got started on the accent wall last night - I'm loving the look but this stuff had my cursing while putting it up hehe. Going to finish it up tonight before Survivor hehe.

  • @JWatt5 - we have a 'B' last name too and one of my rules is no 'B' first names b/c the letter/sound is just so strong. Maybe that is why Parker is still so high on our list lol :) That accent wall is amazing - what is it??

@oxinfree we went with the Chico Bravo travel system as well, namely for a lot of the reasons listed by @arb425 .  My parents bought it and it arrived last week. Just waiting for the nursery to be painted so those items can move out of the dining room and then we'll put it together and play with it :)

@ARB425 - scan was great! Everything is measuring right on track, a few days ahead but that's normal. It was a bit bittersweet because now I've been 'graduated' since all looks normal (both in there and my cervix length) so no more ultrasounds :( I've been insanely spoiled to this point. Baby was also quite uncooperative so no fun pictures to note this time but that's okay, we still got a few including one where I think it looks like s/he is sucking their thumb (the u/s tech thinks more that they were poking themselves in the eye lol).  I'm completely content knowing things are progressing as they should be!!

@JWatt5 - that wallpaper looks awesome. I've installed wallpaper numerous times and it can be a pain, but the finished product is so rewarding :) Nursery is coming together nicely!

@latershrader - yay for a work shower! How fun!

I've moved into planning for the move mode. Just over a month now until possession so realized we'll have to give our notice to our landlord this month and he may want to come over and check on things or have people come through to look at the place. Ugh. With being so sick throughout my first trimester (and beyond) I'll admit the house isn't in the best shape. I full on killed some of the outdoor plants (though I don't have a green thumb to save my life) and the house hasn't had a proper deep clean since my mom did it while we were away for our IVF transfer. So I think the next few days I need to get the place in good shape... BOOOO. Anyways, so so excited to finally be in our new place soon so I can start on the nursery. Y'all are making me jealous ;)

  • @byrneme - if only it was that his last name start with a "B", it's much worse lol. It didn't have to be a deal breaker but, I can't imagine my kid playing sports with on his back lol -  It's wallpaper! I didn't think it would be so hard to put up cause my mother used to re wallpaper her whole house when she changed styles every 5 years or so but @oxinfree is right, so far I'm super happy with the result.

  • @JWatt5 Love your nursery accent wall!

@Colleen0516 Yay for a lovely shower and you are looking great.

I'm 26w4d with 1 baby boy. No appointments until my glucose test at 29 weeks as that was the first slot I could get with my OB. The pregnancy brain is in full force now and I have to write down everything at work, else I will forget. Sleeping through the night has also been lost and I toss and turn and have to get up to pee soo much! I think it is because I have to sleep on my side now and then my shoulder will start to hurt, then I turn over and the other one will eventually start to hurt.

I am also patiently waiting to hear back on the appraisal for the house we are in contract on. This will be our last hurdle before I can relax! We should hear back today.

QOTW: I have never been to a baby shower, so I'm not sure of the policy in our area. But, I'm planning to get the two girls who are hosting a little something like a nice bottle of wine.
  • Hi everyone! This is my first week in the 2nd trimester board, so I look forward to getting to know you lovely ladies. I'm 14 weeks 6 days with an EDD of 9/28. DH and I had 3 failed IUIs (male factor infertility issues--motility, etc) before getting lucky on our first IVF and FET. TW: we started off with 2 little babes but lost the heartbeat of Baby B around 8 weeks. We found out last week via MaterniT21 testing that Baby A is a healthy little girl, though! Next OB appt is April 25 to keep checking cervix length (had a LEEP forever ago).

QOTW: I'm not familiar with doing hostess gifts for a baby shower but love the idea of treating my mom and sister with a mani/pedi and possibly bottle of wine, too.
  • Hey everyone! I'm pretty late this week. Work has been crazy.

    I'm 17w6d with a little girl <3

My next appointment is in exactly 2 weeks. I will be just about 20 weeks which is wild to think about!

I have 0 shower plans at this point- who knows. xx to everyone here.

  • QUESTION :) How does everyone feel about hair coloring in pregnancy? I'm just curious after all we've gone through to get these babies. Is it worth the risk? I really feel like I could use a freshen up (I've got grays for days) but at the same time baby is my priority. I just feel torn since generally ppl say it's fine. TIA <3

  • @byrneme Thanks! I am definitely not complaining about the extra ultrasounds (even though they're internal) since they give me more opportunities to see the kiddo, but all this extra fuss about my cervix is a little nerve-wracking.
  • @Kp214 - totally, I just feel like there's all this conflicting info... like highlights are okay but avoid full color, and certain products contain chemicals you want to avoid etc etc. I think everyone obviously needs to do what they're comfortable with in the end but I just don't know how hard and long I've waited to be pregnant, and just want to make sure I'm not doing anything to potential harm baby, you know? Was just curious if other pregnant after IF mamas were struggling with this decision at all.

@oxinfree - my RE had said colouring is fine but best to wait until the second trimester and then to do foils/something that's not going to sit right on the root. My sister in law is a hairdresser and she said the same thing. I thought a lot about it and decided I'm going to get my hair done for my bday in May, close to the end of my second trimester - my greys are getting bad lol. She'll get as close as she can but I think the big thing is it not getting in to the hair follicle/root.

  • @oxinfree My RE and OB both agreed it was okay as long as it is not overall color. My hairstylist uses an "eco friendly" color on my hair as it doesn't have as many chemicals as the regular stuff. The salon is very well ventilated so I don't feel as if I'm breathing in all the chemicals. I think we all deserve to pamper ourselves because unfortunately pregnancy isn't all sunshine and roses all the time!

@jwatt5 I'm totally late to the party but the nursery looks great! Love the wall paper!

We are in full out nesting mode. Sunday we are planning a trip to Ikea (2hour drive) to organize our basement,  closet and laundry room. I'm hoping to look at a rocking chair while we are there since our recliner isn't going to end up working out in her room.

I think I must have jinxed myself for saying I was sleeping so well! The past 3 nights little one has decided to wake me up kicking at 3am! Dont get me wrong, I love her wiggling around in there but I also love my sleep. I guess she is just training me for her 3am feeds when she gets here!

@oxinfree I completely understand. We've tried so long and hard to get here that we don't want to do anything to jeopardize the baby. I don't color my hair but do understand the concern. I'm like a lunatic when I eat at restaurants, asking all kinds of questions.

  • @oxinfree I just went last night and had my hair colored. My grey was BAD because the last time I went was in November. I wanted to wait until after my first trimester, but my stylist said the color they use is as natural as possible. She also said she would never color a woman's hair in the first tri. My only suggestion is to try to find a salon that uses natural products; I use Aveda salons for that reason.

  • @oxinfree my OB said wait til the second tri and do highlights as opposed to full color. Highlights don't touch your scalp. Doing them tight should cover most of the grays.

How does everyone feel about baths??? I need too relax, my body aches. I feel like it will help my sciatica too.
Last night I took the Luke warm version that they recommend. It was okay, but def would have been better if it was hotter. How do I measure the temperature? My meat thermometer? Lol or a regular temperature thermometer? Is this a stupid question?  I feel like my blonde is showing haha

  • @JWatt5 @Kp214 @ARB425 @latershrader @Colleen0516 Thank you so much ladies! :) That has really helped ease my mind. I am an aveda fan as well so will be going that route and doing highlights to at least break or distract from the grays (gah I'm getting old).

@Colleen0516 - I definitely haven't had a bath for that exact reason. I'm not a huge bath person to begin with but lately have really wanted to have one. Unfortunately, I hate it... HATE it when the water turns luke warm... for me that means it's time to get out, so I just didn't wanna bother if it wasn't going to be enjoyable. I'm sure a meat thermometer would work haha. Or you can invest in one of those temperature baby faucets (that you can use with baby down the road) that shows the temp digitally or whatever. Haven't looked into them much but a thought.

  • I'm late to the party this week too. We moved to a new office space and getting settled is taking my spare time.

@Colleen0516 You can get a thermometer for water, like they use for pools and such. I wouldn't use a meat thermometer, since the range isn't going to be helpful.

AFM, I'm 22 weeks, 6 days with a little girl. Next appointment is in a few weeks. It's just going to be boring appointments from here on out. Lol

Any one starting to think about labor and delivery? I'm looking into different natural methods and considering a duola. Any one else?

@Colleen0516 my Ob said I could take a warm bath to help me sleep. I think as long as you aren't completely submersing your body a warmer bath is ok. I take them and the alwater is probably around 110 degrees, would be better if it was warmer but I love baths and will take what I can. My RE said as long as the water was completely covering me, I would be ok. I guess it's harder for the body temperature to rise with your knees and most of the upper body out of the water. I hope this helps. i never have my abdomen completely submerged.

  • @colleen0516 I've take 2 baths in the last few weeks. I just made sure the temperature wasn't too hot and I limited myself to around 10 minutes. We just put in a jacuzzi tub in our bathroom so I couldnt pass up trialing it.I only use the jets for a few moments to loosen up my shoulders. It definitely helps me sleep and relax.

@persnickity I've done tons of researching on labor and more natural methods. This may sound crazy but we didn't get the choice to need to have fertility treatments and I'd love to have some control over my labor. Great books to read:  Ina mays guide to childbirth(she has tons of videos on you tube as well) and mindful birthing(this focuses on meditation during birth). I'm still undecided on having a doula. I'm a very private person so I'm not sure how comfortable I feel with a stranger assisting me but it's surprisingly affordable in my area ($400-$800 with a visit after and some include birth photography). Most likely it will just be me and my husband in the room but that could change!

  • @Colleen0516 I asked my OB this question because I was a huge bath person and had missed them so much during th IVF process. Her advice was to just make sure the water is a temperature that you can get in with no 'recoil'. If you put your toes in and it hurts or you have to pull it out, too hot. Sadly my baths used to be scalding and I hate the lukewarm feeling so they are now Uber short lol.

  • @persnickity - I've already hired my doula and super duper excited about it! See if there's a company in your area that does like a "meet the doulas" night. We found that was really informative into what to expect with hiring a doula and sold us on having one.

@Colleen0516 - hope you enjoy your relaxing bath! :) much deserved.

  • @ARB425 I feel the same way! I'm a very private person, but a good friend of mine used a doula for her 2 deliveries and said it made a big difference. I'm meeting with one next weekend to see.
  • @persnickity let us know how it goes! I can definitely see how it could make a big difference in your labor.
  • @ARB425 I'm scheduled to meet with her next Sunday. I'll let you known what I find out. I'll take a look at the book suggestions. I'm reading the yoga birth method and the doula I'm meeting with teaches prenatal yoga.
