Trouble TTC

New to the Board (TW - Loss Mentioned)

I've been around the knot and the nest, and now I'm here. I'm not sure where to start, but like many of you I'm just looking for a place where I belong with others who understand.

My journey started when I was in my early 20's. Short version, I asked my GYN about PCOS as I had many of the symptoms. I was told it wasn't an issue and not to worry about it until we were TTC. While we were not actively trying, I ended up having a miscarriage in December of 2006. Over the years I continued to seek a doctor who would test me for PCOS, and even though I kept asking because of all the other health issues, I met the same brick wall - "You're not actively trying so it's not an issue. We can worry about it when you are ready to start having kids." The answer was always BCPs. Needless to say frustrated doesn't even begin to describe it.

I was diagnosed with chronic complex migraines in March 2015. I began reading everything I could about potential triggers and alternative therapies. Many were saying that birth control was causing issues for them so I talked to my neurologist about it. He agreed that it could be a trigger and to discuss it with my PCP. I explained to her what was going on and she said "we there are other forms of prevention if you are not TTC." I told her that I was on the pill to regulate my periods and before I knew it my whole story flew out of my mouth. She suggested I stop the pill and after 3 months she would order blood work. I stopped the pill July 2016 and have been actively TTC since August. My blood work came back and she wanted me to have an ultrasound and a trans-vaginal ultrasound.

November 21 I was officially diagnosed with PCOS based on my blood work and multiple cysts on both ovaries. I cried. I was relieved that someone FINALLY listened to me, I was overwhelmed because I knew I would have a long road ahead.  She initially put me on Metformin, 1000mg. At my last visit I told her it wasn't working, 4 months and still no period therefore I don't think I'm ovulating. She wanted me to wait a few more months before taking the next step but that wasn't good enough for me. I went to a recommended OBGYN earlier this month and again explained my story. She agreed that the Metformin in the current dose was not working as I haven't had a period since August 2016. She upped my Metformin and wants me to try it for 2 months and if that doesn't work we will move to the next step.

I know I haven't been TTC as long as some of you have, but I struggle with many of the same feelings and issues that many of you have for years. So that's my story and it feels good to get it out to people who understand. I've stopped telling people we are TTC because I get so sick of hearing "it will happen when you stop trying!" I look forward to getting to know you all!

Re: New to the Board (TW - Loss Mentioned)

  • Welcome @eranvo27 - ugh. Sounds like you have had a long road to get here, and a painful journey with PCOS. I am glad you discussed it with your GP, and that you have a good plan now. Not having a period since Aug 2016 sounds awful.

Best of luck to you going forward- I don't have PCOS, but many other women here have experience with it. I hope you find support on these boards. :)

  • Welcome :)
I have PCOS and am on Metformin too - and it can be so hard to find a good doctor. My story was similar - doctor didn't listen, wanted me to wait a few months, etc so I found a new one that would listen :) I'm now on 2000mg and just last week got my period after a 3 month cycle.
So as my doctor says - it's a marathon, not a sprint, but we'll get there eventually.
Keep positive and make sure to use everyone here for venting :) - it really does help!

  • @eranvo27 Welcome to the board! The DX to PCOS can be such a long tedious process. I had a very similar issue with no one seeming to want to help me. I am so happy that you have found a doctor that is finally doing something about it. I hope your stay here is short and sweet. Please keep me posted on how everything is going with the Metformin. :) Hugs.

  • @eranvo27 Welcome. I agree with @mandilyn1127, the dx to PCOS can be tedious. At 18 I had my first visit to a gyn for very irregular periods, but didn't know anything about PCOS. They didn't mention anything, instead brushing everything off on my cycles not having evened out (they were no closer together than 3 months). Since I was put on birth control pills I didn't know it would still be a problem until we started TTC.
