Rolling Over

LO is 16 weeks today and rolled from back to belly for the first time.  I'm very excited about the milestone but also a little conflicted. She gets stuck on her tummy because she is still learning to roll from tummy to back. I guess I need to up the tummy time.

Have your LOs rolled in either direction? Are they like Zoolander (they can only turn one way)? How much tummy time do you do?

Ahhh, tummy time. I, admittedly, suck at carving out dedicated time on this. I do it once a day and for as long as it takes until he gets upset, which can be anywhere from 1 minute to 10 minutes. He has strong neck and back muscles and can get his entire chest off the floor in addition to spin himself in circles, so I'm not really worried about getting the time in. He can also roll from stomach to back, head first and always to the right. In fact, if I start to turn my head in that direction, he just follows me until he flips over - it's entertaining.

@jsmai - I think (note, think) that flipping from back to stomach is actually harder so I'd say you're LO is doing just fine. If mine could do that easily, I would probably let him sleep on his stomach to help with the gas.

  • Mine has been going from belly to back since January - I think he was 7-8 weeks old. He doesn't always do it just depends on his mood. He hasn't gone from back to belly except once in his sleep while swaddled. He came close a couple weeks ago when I was on vacation but he hasn't done it since or even come close.

  • At 18 weeks M rolled from back to belly (with intention) and hasn't stopped since. He now rolls all the time and will only sleep on his belly !

We will be 17 weeks tomorrow and still no rolling in either direction. He has gotten close but never gone the whole way. I'm not super worried because as soon as he is rolling I have to get rid of the swaddle ;)
edited to add we do tummy time about three times a day

We do tummy time once - sometimes twice - a day. Now that I'm going back to work I can tell whoever's watching her to do it a few times a day and hold them accountable.

No rolling over yet. She's been soooo close to going back to belly for a few weeks now, but hasn't shown much interest in belly to back.

I was freaking for a little while but her head control is great when she's being held upright or in the jumparoo. However, she's a bit slumpy in her new sit me up seat. (Don't think a day goes by that I don't question myself or freak about something!)

ETA - she turned 16 weeks Wednesday; will be 4 months this Thursday.

  • DD has rolled both ways a few times (3-4?) starting last week, it's really inconsistent and seems to really surprise her when she does it lol. I try to do a little tummy time every day, but am not strict on it at all. As soon as she's upset I pick her up or roll her over.

It's normal to have a period where they roll but then get upset because they can't roll back. The same thing will happen when they start pulling themselves up on furniture ... they'll pull themselves up to standing and then cry because they don't know how to get out of that position.

Hahhaa! That's awesome/funny but kind of sad, lol!

  • ^ that is hilarious and so true. I never thought of them thinking how they are stuck and can't get out of that position.

I'm terrible at doing tummy time. I only do it a handful of times each week and it lasts about 2 minutes because she gets upset. However this week she's been rolling front to back. She rolls to her side from her back and has been for a long time. She actually prefers to sleep on her side. I imagine in a few weeks she'll be a rolling fool. Oh and I noticed today how she strains to try and sit up, it looks as if she's doing a straight leg sit up. She gets up a few inches and holds it.

M does get stuck though. He was rolling belly to back and now that he spends so much more time on his belly he won't roll back over.

Edit it to remove first part because mobile bump decided to add in my first comment to this one. Weird.
  • S rolls both ways inconsistently. But recently at night she keeps trying to roll over and wakes herself up. She's starting to do it more and more which means waking up more and more  :s. Guess there's nothing I can do about it.
  • N Loves tummy time! She rolled front to back starting at beginning of February, only occasionally, and I haven't seen her do it in awhile, but daycare says she does. She can ALMOST roll back to front, her head seems too heavy to get all the way over, but I think she'll figure it out soon.

  • E is 21 weeks tomorrow and started rolling just a few weeks ago. So far she can only go back to belly rolling to the right. Personally, I've always sucked at doing tummy time with her, but I know they do it regularly at daycare with her, and now she gets a lot more tummy time because she puts herself there. I'm looking forward to and dreading full rolls. I can't wait until she is more mobile, but I also like to set her on the bed and get things done which I won't be able to do once she's capable of rolling off it.

  • Filippa is 16 weeks, and hasn't rolled yet, either way.  I am terrible about tummy time.  She is only awake for 1.5 or so hours at a time, and she eats right when she wakes up.  If I do tummy time right after, she spits up, and then we get busy and before I know it she's ready for sleep again.  I'm not in a big hurry for her to start moving though.

Same here  There aren't many opportunities in the day. Oh well, I'm sure LO won't reach his 1st birthday and still just lay flat on his back!

So true! We never  did tummy time with our first because she absolutely hated it. But she rolled over in her sleep all the time and was perfectly fine when it came to walking. Granted, she never crawled.
