Trouble TTC

Do hsg test hurt!

Hi! I have to have a hsg test done in a few months. What should I know or do to prepare for this? Do they hurt? How long does it take? Thanks any advice would be great.

Re: Do hsg test hurt!

  • Welcome to the board! I had an HSG a few months ago. My advice is do not read stories on the internet! It was not nearly as bad as people will have you think (although I have heard that it can hurt more if your tubes are blocked - mine were not). I would recommend a pain killer before although I didn't really need it (I do have a high pain tolerance). The best advice is to just relax and take a pad with you. The dye they use will come out for a while after and I did have some really light spotting. A heating O'd would be nice after because you will be a bit crampy for a while.

  • I agree with @MooFish2364. It usually isn't that bad, maybe just a bit of cramping afterwords.  I would also agree to take something before the appointment just in case.

  • In the scheme of infertility the HSG was a breeze. It took about 10 mins maybe and you just feel kind of full in the uterus if that makes sense. Also as the previous poster said don't Google it because all you'll get are people's horror stories. Good luck!

I agree. Mine was not bad at all.  It's more uncomfortable than painful. My suggestion is to bring your own pad with you for after. The one they gave me was diaper size and not necessary. It took forever but that's only because my doctor was running late from another procedure. Once everything got started it was really quick.
