RhoGAM shot

Hey Ladies!!

My name is Andrea and I'm 24. When I was 19 I expirenced a blighted ovum. It was caught really early and my doctor did a D&C. I was told I had to have a RhoGAM shot for my negative blood. [O-]. I got pregnant 3 months later with my son, who is 4 now

If you're wondering if you will need it again, the answer is maybe but likely.

  • My OB requires it. I'll be getting it again.
  • I'm not looking forward to that shot in the butt!
  • I wrote like a novel, but it only posted a little. Anyway, I guess I don't fully understand it. I know it puts antibodies in the blood.

@oheyitsandy Like you don't know the science behind it?

Basically, if you have a negative blood type your blood is missing the RH protein. If it is introduced into your system your body will assume it's a threat and attack. So if there is any potential for your baby to be a positive blood type, the Rhogram shot prevents your immune system from recognizing the positive blood type of your baby as a threat.

And this would happen if your baby's father is + for it. The chance that the babies blood mixing with yours is the concern.

  • I understand all that, so if I don't have the shot, my body thinks the baby isn't a baby and something else and attacks and the baby is lost? But if I have the shot, it doesn't? I have lost a baby, live birth, lost a baby and now I'm pregnant. I had the shot 4 months ago.
  • Here is a detailed description.

"When Rh-negative blood is exposed to Rh positive blood, the Rh negative blood responds by producing antibodies that attack and destroy the Rh positive blood cells.

This can lead to problems such as fetal anemia, which in turn can cause a life-threatening condition known as hydrops fetalis, which causes internal bleeding, heart and kidney failure, and shock."

  • Thank you
  •  If you talk to an Rh- mother with an Rh+ partner of 60ish years ago (before the RhoGam shot was introduced), you will learn that they (a) lost a lot of babies, or (b) their doctors recommended some form of sterilization procedure after 1-2 pregnancies because the outcomes for moms and babies after the first 1-2 pregnancies were very bad.

I am an Rh- mother who has carried three Rh+ babies (as DH is Rh+).  I expect that this baby will be Rh+ as well. The OBs in my area require the RhoGam shot as a matter of course for all Rh- mothers, regardless of father's bloodtype, though.
    *Siggy warning - loss mentioned*
Preemie ID DDs; then DS; then natural M/C; now due 10/17
High risk for pre-term: weekly Makena injections
  • You will need the shot at 28 weeks and then shortly after the baby is born. In the case of a miscarriage you have one after he miscarriage too. Yes it is to prevent your body from rejecting the baby.
  • @oheyitsandy sorry if I missed this but you've had the rhogam shot with each pregnancy and loss, correct?
