Progesterone

I have been on progesterone by mouth since my first appointment due to miscarrying my first pregnancy. I'm 13 weeks 2 days now and everything has been fine up to this point. My doctor never told me when to stop taking them. I go back March 6th, so I'm going to ask her then but I just wanted others' opinions. Aren't my progesterone levels supposed to level off now since the placenta is supposed to be taking over? Can taking them and keeping it high harm anything?

Re: Progesterone

  • My doctor told me I would be off of them at 12 weeks, but I think that varies by doctor. I'm 10+6 today, my next appointment is when I'm just over 12 weeks. I plan on taking them until the appointment and double-checking with my doctor that I'm good to go off them.

  • I was off all progesterone at 13 weeks, though some Drs say up to 16 weeks. I haven't heard of any complications from women being on them past a certain point it's just that the placenta is supposed to take over by 13ish weeks so you wouldn't technically need progesterone anymore.

    Everyone Welcome!
  • I just saw my OB today and I'm staying on progesterone injections until 14 weeks. She said by then I'm officially I'm the second trimester and the placenta has for sure taken over. She also said that progesterone supplements are meant to bridge the gap from when the yolk sac produces the progesterone to when the placenta produces it and that lot of miscarriages happen within that gap.

  • I have been on progesterone suppositories since 7 weeks and my doctor initially told me I would take them until 10 weeks. At my 10 week appt, she told me to just keep taking them until they were done which is today at 11w3d.
  • There are a ton of women who have been discussing progesterone on this thread, just down the page.
