Re: first time mom check in 2/22 (plus second time mom+ questions)

  • How far along are you?

    9 weeks today actually! :)

    What is your due date?

    September 27th.

Are you having a singleton or multiples?

Singleton from what we saw at my 6 week ultrasound.

    Upcoming appointments this week?

None, I'll probably have to wait to schedule my first appointment until next week when insurance finally gets it's life together. It's been very frustrating.

Any new symptoms or changes or cravings?

I really want Olive Garden, and I'm loving sour candy right now to help with nausea. Otherwise I've really noticed my mood swings kicking in, and everyone keeps telling me I seem really sassy most of the time when I don't meant to be.

    Rants/Raves/Questions?

I'm just about fed up with dealing with insurance, and my job has been absolutely insane these past couple weeks. I'm really trying to find something part time to where I can stay at home (call center, data entry, anything). I'm a waitress/head trainer, and I really just don't see how it's going to work after LO is here.
AND! On top of everything, we're in the process of buying a house right now. It has been stressful and utterly exhausting. All I want is a nap.

GTKY: Will you be garage sale shopping items for bebe or buying new?

Pretty positive a good mix of both. Very close family knows and they've all already started shopping. And we have several offers for hand-me-downs, which I'm so grateful for.

    What is your due date?

    9/17

Are you having a singleton or multiples?

    Singleton

    Upcoming appointments this week?

    None until 3/8

Any new symptoms or changes or cravings?

Been experiencing leg cramps and RLP alot lately. Not craving much yet though.

    Rants/Raves/Questions?

Closing got delayed, but we finally get to move into our new house tomorrow!!!! Yay!!!!!

GTKY: Will you be garage sale shopping items for bebe or buying new?

That depends on the item. DH will be upcycling an old tool chest we found at a pawn shop and turning it into an awesome changing table. Some things I just can't do used though.

    STM Questions:

So I have been debating not doing the Panorama screening and just settling for the basic trisomy test. DH wants to wait to find out the sex, and the test results really won't change our intentions with this LO. Is it worth it to do the Panorama instead of the basic trisomy screen only?

How far along are you? 11+3

What is your due date? September 10th

Are you having a singleton or multiples? singleton

Upcoming appointments this week? no, not until 3/6 :(

Any new symptoms or changes or cravings? Just the same old nausea/constipation/fatigue routine. I do constantly crave bagels and cream cheese when I feel like eating, though.

Rants/Raves/Questions? Just so ready to not be nauseated anymore.

GTKY: Will you be garage sale shopping items for bebe or buying new? I'm not opposed buying some things consignment if I can find what I want (i.e.: a bumpo, a baby bath, things that are easily cleanable), and I know we have some hand-me-downs coming from a few friends, and my in-laws, but we'll probably buy most things new.

    Questions for Second Time Mom+?
Not that I can think of. :)

  • How far along are you? 9+5

What is your due date? 9/22

Are you having a singleton or multiples? Just one.

Upcoming appointments this week? Nope. 12 weeks is the next one.

Any new symptoms or changes or cravings? I'm generally feeling worse. More nausea. Super tired all the time. My legs are killing me.

Rants/Raves/Questions? Not really. Work has been extra busy. Plus, it's already hot outside. Kind of scared for the summer.

GTKY: Will you be garage sale shopping items for bebe or buying new? My brother has one of each and is done having kids. I imagine I will be getting a lot of hand-me-downs. DH's sister also has a son and wants to give us all of his stuff. My mom is on a mission to get us a bunch of new stuff, though. Says she's going to get various family members to go in on all the big stuff.

    What is your due date?
    September 17th

Are you having a singleton or multiples?
    Singleton

    Upcoming appointments this week?
    Not until March 9th

Any new symptoms or changes or cravings?
I've been going to bed earlier which actually has been helping me stay asleep - strange. But today I noticed my eyes are a little bloodshot and I got a twitch going on. Oh exhaustion how you keep finding ways to beat me up.

    Rants/Raves/Questions?
When I scheduled my 12wk appointment (3wks ago) there wasnt anything on my work calendar for that day...and now there is, thanks bossman, oh and I am responsible for setting up the seminar. And it is DURING my appointment. Looks like I gotta call the OB for an earlier or later appointment...oh wait I did and no one answered. Ughhh.

GTKY: Will you be garage sale shopping items for bebe or buying new?
We have a local FB group for baby items for sale, so I will probably get some stuff from there some hand me downs and some new. A little bit of everything, really depending on what it is and who it is from.

    Questions for Second Time Mom+?
I can never think of any questions myself, I typically lurk everyone else's questions lol.

  • How far along are you? 12 weeks today!!!

What is your due date? Sept 7

Are you having a singleton or multiples?  Just one :)

    Upcoming appointments this week? Nope

Any new symptoms or changes or cravings? Lots of discharge going on (sorry, TMI) Its so funny because I've been reading that at 12 weeks discharge may amp up, and sure enough... 12 weeks today and I can't stay out of the bathroom.

Rants/Raves/Questions? Just super excited to be 12 weeks today!

GTKY: Will you be garage sale shopping items for bebe or buying new?  I will probably get some things from friends, buy some second hand, and get some new... depending on what it is/how long I'll use it, etc.

    Questions for Second Time Mom+?
I'm going to have to start writing these down as they come to be through the week, because this question erases my mind every time!

Are you having a singleton or multiples? Singleton

Upcoming appointments this week? Off for my week 9 US (this will be my 3rd US because I have been being seen by a RE for IVF/FET etc). They may start weening me off my many meds I am on. So that should be interesting...and we are excited to see bebe...as it has been a week...its gonna be odd to go another 2 months or more until we see an US again.

Any new symptoms or changes or cravings? Diarrhea/constipation, Heartburn, Hot Flashes, Sorta just feeling off, SO MUCH GAS AND BLOAT!

Rants/Raves/Questions? Does anyone else seem to be sneezing more? What foods are you eating that you are really liking these days?

    Dreaming about vacation!

GTKY: Will you be garage sale shopping items for bebe or buying new? Probably a mix...but I am sorta cheap but also a impulsive shopper so we will see what comes together. Some things I worked hard to get at garage sales before we got prego, people are now wanting to give us for free (getting rid of stuff because they are done having kids). So it is making me cautious to buy to much until I see what free stuff comes.

    Questions for Second Time Mom+?

    1. Any suggestions for buying maternity bra's for 42D (maybe 42DD) that are soft but with out thick straps and that have under wires and somewhat affordable?

    2. Anything that surprised you during your previous pregnancies - during the 2nd and 3rd trimester that you wish you had known earlier?

    3. At what week of your pregnancy could you feel the baby move?

@JNR6510 I have never done the Panorama. I just don't think it's necessary.

@BecauseLove I really recommend Nordstrom for a bra fitting. They bring you a ton of options at different price points.

Insomnia is real 2nd and 3rd tri. I usually sleep well, so I thought I might avoid it. Nope.

I think I remember feeling the baby move around 18 weeks - shortly before my 20-week ultrasound. Because when the tech said (with both kids) "Wow, s/he is really active!" I said,  "Yeah...I know."

  • @BecauseLove I just checked my baby book notes for DD...first time I was positive that what I was feeling was baby was at 19+1.  Hubby felt it about a week later.

  • @BecauseLove I never bought a Doppler because I knew I would stress myself out if I couldn't find the heartbeat. I had my first appointment at 12 weeks and heard the heartbeat. I didn't really stress, I saw my belly growing and felt nauseous so I just trusted everything was okay  :)
  • @BecauseLove I'm so glad I'm not the only one! I am sneezing like crazy lately!

  • How far along are you? 12 weeks 4 days

What is your due date? Sept 4, Labor Day ;-)

Are you having a singleton or multiples?  Singleton

    Upcoming appointments this week? Nope

Any new symptoms or changes or cravings? Continuation of frequent urination, which I don't mind so much *except* when I'm trying to go to sleep at night -- soo annoyoing.  As for new ones, headaches.

Rants/Raves/Questions? This has been on my mind a lot: what kind of stroller would you recommend?  It's especially important for us because we live in NYC, so there will be A LOT of use (and like most New Yorkers, we don't have a car).  I was pretty appalled at the price of the Uppababy Vista, but it also looks so nice.  Ah!  I definitely want one that works with a car seat when the baby is tiny, and then adapts for a larger baby/toddler.  I would also like it to be lightweight and user-friendly.  Suggestions welcome!

GTKY: Will you be garage sale shopping items for bebe or buying new?  Not too many garage sales in NYC (I think I'd have more luck in the suburbs), but I'm totally open to it!  Wondering if I should consider posting a Craigslist ad in the future about buying a stroller second-hand, hmm...

    Questions for Second Time Mom+?
    The stroller one above... :)

  • Ooh, sorry, but one other question related to my previous stroller question: would you recommend Buy Buy Baby for strollers and other baby stuff?
  • @margareth - I live in the NYC burbs and have the Uppa Baby Vista. I will say, the few times I have brought it into the city, I regretted it. It is massive and cumbersome. Bringing it in and out of the subway without help is really hard and the rear wheel-base is really wide, making it difficult to navigate stores with narrow aisles. If you have stairs in and out of your apartment, I would say it is a big no. Which sucks, because it is otherwise practical for city living :) the bin in the bottom is massive and holds a ton of stuff.

  • @sarahufl This is so helpful, thank you!!  I don't have stairs in and out of apt, but I don't like the idea of something massive and cumbersome, especially since I'll be taking the subway regularly.  Any stroller(s) you would recommend?  Ideally, it would be less than $500, but... we'll see :)
  • @JNR2510 So the Panorama tests for:
    - Trisomy 21
    - Trisomy 18
    - Trisomy 13
    - X (Turners Syndrome )
    - XXX
    - XXY or XYY

It does not test for Spina Bifida. The normal screening won't test for the sex chromosome disorders. And, when you get results, you can have the sex in an envelope and open it as late as you want.

  • @margareth Oh man, there's a stroller that is all in one with the car seat. It's called Doona. $499.

Also, the Peg Perego Pop Up Book stroller is super convenient. But pricey.

Go into Buy Buy Baby and tell them the most important things (light weight to go up stairs etc) and they'll show you some good ones!

  • @margareth every time I go to NYC I bring my Uppa Baby GLite...it's a lightweight, folding umbrella stroller. Great to stack crap on lol & easy to fold and carry up stairs. Otherwise...you'll be better served with a backpack type diaper bag and a baby carrier (I recommend a Tula!)

  • @Texafornian good to know! Sounds like I'm going with an uppa baby, which is funny since I literally didn't know that brand 1 week ago
  • @margareth you should note though that the light strollers aren't good until the baby can sit up on their own. Are you getting an infant car carrier or is that not necessary where you're at? If so, perhaps get a click in stroller (can't recall the names)...it's just a cheap, light frame that the infant seat can click into. Then upgrade to an umbrella. I think a carrier will save you from the get go...baby wear that kid mama!

  • @texafornian Thank you.  As of now I'm thinking the Uppababy Cruz with the Mesa car seat.  Thoughts?
  • @margareth DH and I are cheap, so we got a graco travel system (car seat and stroller) with our first. Four years and two kids later, I still like it a lot.  I think the system we got was around $150. My SIL bought a $2000 double stroller, and then bought two others because it was wide and cumbersome.  We bought another Graco for our double for under $100, and it worked better than any of the ones SIL bought. So don't count out the cheaper options!

    BabyFruit Ticker
  • @margareth that looks like a good lightweight option.
I had a Quinny Buzz stroller (received it free...would NOT be my choice) and a Maxi Cosi infant seat. The Maxi Cosi adapts to quite a few strollers.
You could also do a snap n go base and any carrier you want if the lightweightness and ease of carrying up stairs is your primary concern. (https://www.buybuybaby.com/store/product/baby-trend-reg-snap-n-go-reg-ride-along-elite-universal-infant-car-seat-carrier-frame/3289765?skuId=46476227&mcid=PS_googlepla_nonbrand_activity_&adpos=1o3&creative=87521932980&device=c&matchtype=&network=g&product_id=46476227&gclid=Cj0KEQiA88TFBRDYrOPKuvfY2pIBEiQA97Z8Md4-RzCK_3VJo4OcjM3zb09lZPaK0QOA-yzL1ZDUifYaAgr38P8HAQ).
I still think a carrier like a Tula will save you in a place like NYC. Babytula.com

  • Thanks @SummerGirl21and @Texafornian! Much appreciated. Gonna look for the Tula, too!
  • @Texafornian and @margareth - I'm totally seconding the babywearing option. We have a Kibi (a soft carrier similar to the Tula) and two woven wraps, and they are some of the best purchases we ever made. You can throw any of these under the stroller as a second option, should baby need some snuggle time, and it's also a great way to keep uninvited hands off your baby. Things like grocery shopping become so much easier and so much more fun! People would give Benji and I funny looks and smiles because we were always dancing through the aisles together. And things like hiking narrow, uneven trails are so much easier with a good wrap or carrier. I really can't recommend them highly enough.
  • How far along are you?

    9 wks 3 days

    What is your due date?

September 27 based on FET date

Are you having a singleton or multiples?

    Singleton

    Upcoming appointments this week?

First OB appt on March 3 (got officially transferred from our RE)

Any new symptoms or changes or cravings?

Still have the sore boobs, and heartburn is now a daily and nightly thing. Craving carbs nonstop.

    Rants/Raves/Questions?

Rant: my pregnant immune system is worthless. I've been battling a cold since Wednesday and am still completely congested.

GTKY: Will you be garage sale shopping items for bebe or buying new?

If we end up with a boy, my sister has a ton of hand-me-downs. I'm not really into garage sales but am a member of my neighborhood online group and would definitely consider getting some listed items from there. Not gonna lie, though: I can't wait to go buy baby stuff, so there will be a fair amount of new things purchased!

    Questions for Second Time Mom+?

  • How far along are you? 13w+3d

What is your due date? Aug 31

Are you having a singleton or multiples? Single

Upcoming appointments this week? Nope, I had my 12 week appt Friday. Got to hear the heartbeat for the first time!

Any new symptoms or changes or cravings? Skin is breaking out, and I'm craving cherry pop tarts.

Rants/Raves/Questions? Rant: I've only received bills for my labs so far, but nothing from my first appt. I'm nervous these bills are going to pile up all at once.

Rave: Relieved that our genetic screening was negative, and LO has very low risk for chromosomal abnormalities, since I have family history. The tricky part, all the results are in my email, and we're team green, so it's hard to resist clicking to find out baby's sex! Also loved hearing baby's heartbeat for the first time.

Question: My urine sample was pink at the doc Friday. I was freaking out, but doctor didn't seem concerned. She took some cultures, so we'll see if there's anything abnormal. It was weird, because my pee before and after was normal. Everything I read suggests UTI, but I have no other symptoms. Has this happened to anyone else?

GTKY: Will you be garage sale shopping items for bebe or buying new? I'll probably buy mostly new. This is our first and we plan to have 2, so we'll buy gender neutral so we can reuse as much as possible.

How far along are you? 10 weeks today

What is your due date? Sept 24

Are you having a singleton or multiples? singleton

Upcoming appointments this week? Friday I have my first appointment with the midwife - in this country everything is done through a midwife, but the births themselves take place at a hospital. There was some confusion because I went in at 4 weeks, which they said was too early, so they sent me to a regular gyn, then when he graduated me back to the midwife, they were like, 'why did you wait so long to make a midwife appointment?'. ugh.

Any new symptoms or changes or cravings? nope, just the regular exhaustion and food aversions. Crunchy and/or dry carbs are doing me well right now....pretzels, wraps with peanut butter, that's basically all I've eaten in 24 hours. lol

    Rants/Raves/Questions? not really...

GTKY: Will you be garage sale shopping items for bebe or buying new? mix. I'd be fine getting used clothing, a used stroller if we could find a decent one for a decent price (they're SO expensive in this country. I think I'm going to get one in Canada or the States and bring it over when we visit in the summer), etc, but obviously not a used car seat, etc.

    Questions for Second Time Mom+?
I see people talking about strollers. I've been looking at the baby jogger city select (very interested in the LUX version coming in the spring!) because it has great cargo space (we live in a city that's VERY stroller friendly - you don't have to collapse strollers when going on public transport) and we don't have a car, we just use public transit because it's so good here.  And it can also convert to a double stroller later if we want.  Anyone have first hand experience with them? The reviews I've read have all said that the other baby jogger city strollers are better (mini, etc), but they don't convert to a double, which is a priority for us. They also don't have the storage space, which is also a priority, and we don't care as much about weight and bulk (the strollers people use in this city are like SUVs.....). I am also interested in babywearing, but not in the winter since they don't de-ice well here..I slip around all over the place in the winter and there is NO WAY I'm risking that wearing a 3 month old next winter!

  • @BigBadWolf12 Where do you live, did you say?  Very curious!
  • @margareth DD was born in Manhattan and we lived there for first 6 months. I mostly did baby wearing. I can't tell you how many Uppa Baby strollers I saw in the city. We used a Britax stroller system and that worked very well for us. But anytime I went on the subway if I didn't have DH with me I would do my Ergo.

  • @EmilyE13 I did both. I bought my regular bra a size up (or two) for work and then I bought some maternity tanks (Basics...at Target). The tank I wore like a bra under shirts...was WAY more comfy. Your boobs will go up and down after baby with nursing so the soft ones worked better for me rather than commiting to a size.

@ElleKH which woven wraps do you have/like?

@MrsVP614 a nightlight like the Munchkin Owl is a savior from the get go...will allow you to check on baby and see what you are doing while nursing middle of the night. I still use it and my DD is 2.5! Also burp cloths...the cheaply cloth diapers work great to have on hand. You don't need an umbrella stroller until waaaay later. You don't need the highchair right away either. You can also wait on a bathtub if you want...we put a towel down in the sink and filled it up to bathe baby for first month or so. And clothing...don't go overboard on tiny clothes because baby could be bigger at birth. Also...they pretty much live in onesies/pjs for the first few months!

@BigBadWolf12 I'm a stm and planning in the city select double as well. I wanted the city mini the first go around as we were planning on being one n done but I got a free stroller handed to me so no choice in the matter. I hate my current one with no storage...I think it's key. Also, note when purchasing that the 2016 models may be cheaper but the 2017 ones are like 30% lighter and fold better.

  • Omg I'm in love. I can't wait until it's released in may! Definitely not compromising on my stroller. I will have a shoe box to put my kid in if it means I can do this stroller.

LOL yes, this is me to a tee, @sugargirl1019. I have no problem shelling out for a great stroller and baby carrier. the actual nursery will be minimal....just a cheap IKEA crib and dresser to double as a change table lol.

  • @Texafornian - I have one 100% combed Egyptian cotton from Oscha, which is abolutely gorgeous, but I love my Firespiral woolie best. It is so soft, molds better to baby's form, and is much more supportive. I thought a woolie would be itchy and only good in the colder months of the year, but I was completely wrong. Mine is 25% merino lambswool and 75% combed cotton, which is so soft and comfy, and wool actually provides excellent thermoregulation. Have you tried any wovens? If so, which have you tried and which did you like best?

^ That's the Oscha and one of my favorite photos of DS and me. <3
