Subchorionic hemmorhage

I was just diagnosed with a subchorionic hemmorhage with placenta detachment at 12w. My baby is measuring 12w 4d, has a strong heartbeat, and kicks squirms! My doctor said it is likely I will lose the baby, but this pregnancy may continue normally if enough of the placenta stays attached. I'm getting a second radiologist to read the ultrasound and am going to have another scan in a couple of weeks. I'm trying to be hopeful but also preparing for the worst.

Have any of you experienced a subchorionic hemmorhage with positive outcomes? I've read it is quite common.

  • I was diagnosed with one at my dating US  at 8+2, I'm now 9+6. They didn't tell me I would probably miscarry, that's frightening. All the tech told me was that they recommend pelvic rest until the end of 1st tri and to also let them know if I had any bleeding or spotting whatsoever. My doctor and I have a really good relationship and I feel like if it were something this concerning she would've called me personally or at least have had her nurse call me to discuss it further. So sorry you're going through this.
  • Thats scary, Im sorry! I hope you get the best outcome!

  • I don't have any experience but I'm praying everything works out for you and baby.
  • I'm right there with you, hun. I'm not sure if my placenta has started to detach, but there is a large hematoma between it and and uterine wall, so my doctor is afraid that it might. What directions were you given? I'm on bed rest, progesterone pills, and extra vitamins. I also got an injection to help stop bleeding since I had been spotting. Were you given/told something similar? Have you been spotting?

    On the bright side, I've heard from several other moms that they themselves, women they know, or other women in their BMBs had SCH and went on to carry healthy, full term babies. Some of these moms even experienced full-blown bleeding! So I'm trying to stay hopeful.

    What I haven't heard is anything specific to placenta detachment, so hopefully someone else can jump in here and give you some insight on that. You and baby will be in my thoughts and prayers, mama! <3
  • No experience, just lots of thoughts and prayers. :heart:

  • @ElleKH

    My doctor just said to go about normal life and see what happens. I bled for one day which was three weeks ago and spotted brown after my pelvic exam on Thursday.

    After reading about what steps you are talking with bed rest, progesterone, and vitamins I'm going to call my doctor and ask if there is something I can do to help this baby out! My doctor was hopeful but the radiologist was not. I'm also getting a second radiologist to look at the ultrasound tomorrow.

    I hope we are both here in September to share newborn photos!
  • No personal experience, but sending positive thoughts your way!
  • I was diagnosed with a SCH at 8 weeks, but mine was small. It's decreased in size since then. She told me pelvic rest, no heavy lifting and to take it easy. All situations are different, she wasnt concerned about me miscarrying unless it got larger. I bled twice with it, otherwise just spotting off and on. Stay hydrated, kick your feet up and rest as much as possible! Lots of prayers to you, I know it's scary.

    Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm looking forward to the second reading from a different radiologist because I have no idea how big it is or how much placenta has detached he just told my doctor it wasn't good. I need more info because I've read so many success stories from SCH. I also need to know if I need to be on bed rest, for now I'm just doing as little as possible (I have an 18 month old to take care of).
  • I don't have experience with this, but truthfully, this is the first time I've heard of a doctor saying that you'll likely miscarry.  I'm so sorry.  I hope you end up with a healthy, full term baby in September.
  • My sister had one, I don't know the severity of hers, but she was on bed rest/ pelvic rest for the first tri and it resolves itself, my niece is a happy 7 month old today! I really hope everything works out okay for you. Hugs.

  • @Toshandbaby My OB also told me she had larger ones with 2 of her pregnancies and she had healthy children. My ultrasound tech also had one and has a healthy child. Try to keep your faith and take good care of yourself! Try to minimize the lifting of you 18 month old if at all possible. Unfortunately, you can't really do anything about them besides taking it easy. Some re-absorb into your uterus, which is what mine is doing now. And then some bleed out, clot, bleed out, etc.

  • @daniellelynette

    Thank you for sharing! The positive stories absolutely help!

    @Sprite2012

    My doctor was very positive and hopeful until he got the call from the radiologist. I think he just wants to prepare me for what could happen and I had a lot of questions about miscarriage since I'm only one week from my second trimester it definitely scares me. So after we got done talking about miscarriage he had me make an appointment and ultrasound for 15w. And then I was confused on what to expect! Basically we just wait and see and hope and pray
  • No experience with SCH, but wishing you the best! Hopefully everything will work out OK, and it will resolve itself.
  • I don't have personal experience of my own,  but a very close friend of mine had a large SCH with her pregnancy, bled a ton and was also told she would likely miscarry.  She was on pelvic rest and extra monitoring her entire pregnancy.   However she has a very healthy active 3 year old now.  There is hope and I would take it as easy as possible.
  • I had multiple SCHs at my dating ultrasound and most have since resolved (minus the one behind the placenta). The OB I spoke with at my last ultrasound (@11 weeks) told me they don't start to be concerned unless greater than 50% of the placenta is covered by the SCH. That being said, here's a screen shot of a study done with SCH and pregnancy outcome. I'm all about evidenced based practice/knowledge. I'm not sure this will give you reassurance, but I feel knowledge is power. Fingers crossed and keep us updated. *hugs*

  • I had a SCH with this pregnancy a few weeks ago. Mine was not near the placenta I do not think though. My doctor told me to take it easy. My bleeding has since stopped and my last ultrasound showed improvement. T&ps your way!
  • @jutondreau

    I too find comfort in statistics, I need to know more about what the radiologist saw, like how big the SCH is, because it sounds like I have a 50/50 chance and I've already read many success stories today. I think they gave  me the worst case scenario...

    @baileylove22

    Thanks for sharing. It sounds to me like many women have a SCH and the doctor doesn't even seem concerned, I definitely am looking forward to seeing the typed out radiologists report so I will have some more info!
  • FX for it to heal and that you have a healthy, happy baby in your arms come September.
  • I've asked this on Facebook and no one that commented lost their baby.
    I was diagnosed with one at my 6 week ultrasound. I had another at 8 weeks and it shrunk.
    Ill have an additional ultrasound at 12 weeks to check it again.
    So far, so good... I hope.
    My OB said it does increase the chance of miscarrying.
  • @Toshandbaby - You're so sweet. I hope we're both here too. <3 And I think asking your doctor is a great idea! Better to ask and be sure. Although it does seem that different doctors have various approaches when it comes to SCH. After talking to some other moms, I wouldn't be surprised if yours instructed you differently. Please please please let me know how it went today! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you and baby! <3
  • I had one with my last pregnancy. I bled like crazy for a few days, was really not sure how the baby was still there but after around 14 weeks, the SCH had shrunk and they stopped monitoring it. Had a healthy baby last April.

    I will say that the bleeding was the scariest thing I've ever gone through. I was passing large clots and bleeding bright red blood for several days and spotted for close to two weeks. It was so hard to know there was nothing I could do, so I just waited it out.

    I wish you all the best and that you get past this quickly!
  • @ElleKH

    Yes, my doctor has  the wait and see approach. It's so crazy to hear how different doctors are! He also encouraged me to go about normal life because sitting around and worrying is bad too.

    @mc123mc

    Thank you for sharing your happy story! I've only bled for once for a day (scariest day of my life)! I had no idea how common and normal it is! I had zero bleeding with pregnancy number one, so I didn't even know pregnant women bled! It's very nice to hear experiences with happy endings!
  • @Toshandbaby I think the report will definitely give you piece of mind in that it'll give you more info. I'm glad you're OB can look at things in the positive and be supportive. He/she has likely seen the outcome of these which is why they are able to take that viewpoint. Radiologists don't necessarily see the outcomes-they have knowledge and know statistics etc, but they are dealing less with the people on a personal basis. Fingers crossed ❤️❤️❤️
  • Lots of prayers your way!
  • @Toshandbaby the more prayers the better!! Alllll of our family and friends knew about our pregnancy from the first beta draw. It's been nice having so many people lift this baby up in prayer. Stay positive my friend!!  <3

    @LaceyC1020 There's nothing like creating babies that makes you realize how powerful prayer is! Whether it be getting pregnant, managing a pregnancy, or delivering, God definitely has a hand in things and I want him on  my side!
