Rocking chairs/gliders

Hey there,

Any advice on finding a stylish but affordable rocking chair or glider? I love the brand Monte, but spending $1000 or more on a chair for the nursery seems insane. That's almost as much as we spent on our couch from West Elm!

Would love to hear any thoughts.

Thanks!

Re: Rocking chairs/gliders

  • I actually went with an IKEA Poang chair.  They're super comfy and affordable!

  • I've been looking at ones on Wayfair!
  • We have a good local furniture store in MA.  One of the locations has a clearance section.  I found a sweet microfiber Lay-Z-Boy rocker recliner for under $200 when I was pregnant with DS.  I loved it when he was little for feeding/nursing, and I slept in it for most of the last 6 weeks I was pregnant with him.

  • I plan to use my Lay Z boy electric recliner that I bought last summer as my rocker.  It rocks but has has electric controls so you can adjust it however you want.
  • We got a Dutalier Ultramotion glider on super sale from Amazon (pretty sure it was a Black Friday deal). A glider/rocking chair was the ONE thing that I couldn't fit into my tiny 1BR with my first kiddo, so this time around, with a slightly larger space, I made room for it!
  • We got our glider with foot stool from BRU. It is comfy and super affordable at $178.
  • I've been doing tons of looking. Sister in law offered me hers. To be honest it's not my style so I really thought about turning it down. However, it's really nice so I figured why spend the extra money.

However if if I was buying one I would look for the models that you can remove the glider option and add legs to make it a chair later in life.
  • We have a glider and foot glider from BRU.  It's a plush one not a wooden one. I love it.  I've kept it in both kids rooms and used it until they were two. This is going to be my third kid using this glider.  I nurse and rock in it day and night.  I have some friends that have never used a glider and don't mind not having one but I live in mine!!
  • I have a recliner from Living Spaces that I absolutely adore. It's 1 1/2 width of a regular recliner. It's super comfy to sleep on, nurse on, and kept the 3rd tri nighttime heartburn at bay.
I want to say it ran about $250

Plus, it coordinates with the living room furniture for when it's not needed for maternity/postpartum care anymore

Bumping from it right now... Aw Yeah!!  :D

  • Having a really awesome, comfy glider was so important to me. We ended up buying ours from Buy Buy Baby and because of their 20% off coupons it made getting a really nice one more affordable. We ended up purchasing a Best Chairs glider + gliding ottoman (used a 20% off coupon on each) and the total for both combined came to $687.98. I know this might be more than a lot of people want to spend, but if we wanted just the glider it would've been less than $500. I could easily fall asleep in this chair it is so big and plush and comfy!

  • We splurged the first time around and bought a leather La-Z-Boy recliner with swivel... it is currently in the living room so I'll have to fight DH to get it back in the nursery.

If we don't put it back in the nursery, I could see getting one from a local fb exchange to save on cost.  We used our recliner a lot with my boys... as infants for rocking/feeding but even now for reading and cuddling/rocking.
  • Highly recommend a gliding or rocking recliner...you have no idea how much i wound up sleeping in that chair and the fact that it reclined was a life saver.
  • I got a glider at Target for only $250 with baby #3.

  • I bought this on Amazon for the nursery recently. It was easy to put together, the fabric seems decent and it's nice for the price. The cherry matches the wood in our other furniture nicely.  Ask me again after I spend hours in it!

One of my best friends purchased one of these recliners when her son was born back in August, and the right arm constantly pops off the peg- nothing a little wood glue wouldn't fix but it annoyed me enough (I babysat him for awhile) to where I won't get one. Just a heads up!

We ordered this one from BRU for our nursery.. a little pricier, but soooo comfy and like pp have mentioned it coordinates with our living room furniture for later on.

  • I got a super comfortable glider from Costco when DD was born that if I remember correctly was under $200. You can probably find one on their website. I gotta say, the investment in one is huge. I spent a lot of time in it. I spent a lot of time in it while nursing DD, and I still rock her in it.
  • When I was pregnant with DD, we bought a La-Z-Boy recliner that rocks and is on a 360 degree swivel. We keep it in the living room. I knew for midnight feedings and other late night shenanigans I'd want the option to watch TV. I still love it

  • @LAMCH1980 I have the same!

I have used our glider with foot stool every day, multiple times a day for almost two years and it's held up great!

  • I have a glider that's similar to the one listed  from Amazon we got from BRus. Honestly I used our lazy boy the most in our living room. We have a ranch style house so our living room is close to the kids rooms. I am not sure how things will with with baby #2. I remember many late nights watching my recorded shows rocking the baby in the living room in the middle of the night.
  • I want a Lazy Boy this time around. I have a dutalier (got it from Zulily). This time I wanted something for the living room that will be comfortable enough to fall asleep in.

    Here We Go Again!!

  • So glad to read this thread! FTM and working on nursery planning, I kept wondering how much I would really use a separate chair in baby's room. After reading all the feedback here, I am on the hunt for a grey one.

Any thoughts on the functionality or comfort of a glider+ottoman vs recliner? I've spent plenty of time on recliners, but not a lot on glider+ottoman. Does the lack of knee support with the ottoman option cause discomfort or make it harder to stay comfortable during those late/long sessions?

  • This is is the one I'm getting. It's a glider, swivels and reclines!! My friends have it and I LOVE it! I babysit for them so I've spent a lot of time in it! It also has an option to lock the recline if you want to be upright. And side pockets! :)

  • I also have the $150 Storkcraft one mentioned above from when we had DD and it still looks gtg for baby #2.  I used it all the time for nursing.
