Lunch Fail

So I attended a presentation today where they had a lunch buffet (Panera sandwiches and sides).  I got in line and was talking to a friend of mine, and without thinking reached for a sandwich.  It was halfway to my plate when I realized it had lunchmeat and I couldn't eat it, so I had to drop it back on the platter.  My friend was like "What's wrong with that sandwich?" and of course the host of the presentation overheard and hurried over, concerned that the food was rotting or something. I had to stammer some lame excuse and they looked at me like a weirdo. Sigh. Anyone else forgetting what they can't do??

Re: Lunch Fail

  • Haha with my first pregnancy I ate sliced turkey breast and as soon as I was done I was like crap, what was I thinking. But I was so nauceous and it actually tasted good... regardless my daughter is now a healthy 17 month old. Clearly I didn't ruin her with my turkey breast slip

  • I want a Subway sandwich so badly. I ate it in moderation with my DS. Then during my last pregnancy I ate it more than I should've. We ended up losing that baby. And even though I know it wasn't because of the deli meat, I just can't bring myself to eat it again this pregnancy. I told DH I want a footlong the day I deliver this baby though!
  • I had a turkey sandwich Tuesday and it was delicious. All in moderation :)

  • I have turkey in my fridge right now.

  • I wouldn't feel too bad. I have already had Queso Fresco (a no no) and Bean Sprouts. My bad. Oh, and Chorizo. I don't ever eat a lot of it and not on purpose, but so far everything feels fine. Super awkward situation though!

This morning, on the radio... they were talking about pregnancy food no-no's... and Soft Serve was on the list! Pshhhh whaatt?!

  • @VLillyV, wait, no bean sprouts? Well, I broke that rule at a group lunch today! Maybe that's why no one questioned me too much for not drinking, because they saw me accept bean sprouts!
  • My dr told me I could have lunch meat in moderation. Like subway she said I could eat any of the meat there as long as I got the sandwich toasted, same for mcallsters and Panera!

If you're at home you can toss it in the microwave for a few seconds too. Maybe not the tastiest thing, but effective if you're worried!

  • I have a hankering for honey baked ham or their turkey which is cooked already so I feel less guilty but honestly I had subway a few times last pregnancy, I was told not to eat hot dogs but Nathan's Beef was all I could keep down first few weeks around lunchtime!

I feel ya!! My 1st meal after delivering both my kiddos was a Jimmy John's sandwich  :#
  • I read that beansprouts are ok if cooked.  Otherwise, they could have listeria, salmonella, or e.coli...it's because they need warm and humid conditions to grow, perfect also for bacteria....
  • I'm firmly on team #eatthemeat. Like a previous poster suggested, just throw it in the microwave. :)
  • @ShakeUpTampa OMG I want Honey Baked Ham!!! I haven't had it in over 3 years and the closest one is 2.5 hours away. I'm so mad they closed the one here like 10 years ago  :'(
  • I cooked steaks for Valentine's day and while most of mine was well done, I didn't even think about it and one part was definitely medium. I had already eaten a bite before I realized it. Seriously though, I crave COLD lunchmeat/subs. I did with DD too. My dad ended up bringing me an Italian sub to the hospital a few hours after DD was born. I may get someone to do the same this time lol.

  • Outside of the US, lunch meat and soft cheeses are not contraindicated in pregnancy. The risk of listeria is considered low in other developed countries. Most cheeses in the US are pasteurized. That being said, I eat lunch meat and soft cheeses in moderation without guilt.
  • As long as Blue Bell doesn't have another freakin' listeria recall, I will make it through this pregnancy with my sanity intact. I rarely eat lunch meat, boil my hot dogs (because cold=gross), and practically all the cheese in the grocery store is made with pasteurized milk.

I went to a local deli that was known for freshness and quality and i would make sure to eat it all within the first 5 days of purchase. I didn't even microwave it. I think if you eat from a reputable deli, you're fine. Except for gas station meat. Don't eat that. Listeria can happen with veggies, fruit, peanut butter.... Pretty much anything. You can drive yourself crazy thinking of the possibilities that it can be found. But of course if you still feel uncomfortable eating the lunchmeat, then thats your call, mama.
  • I ate lunch meat through my entire first pregnancy.  You can zap it in the microwave for a few seconds if you're worried.  Last time I was pregnant there were listeria outbreaks in cantaloupe, ice cream and hummus and they dint say not to eat those things.
  • My husband also brought me an Italian sub to the hospital after I gave birth to my son...the lunch meats I like don't taste great if they are a bit warm.

  • It's fine to eat. I ate it my entire first pregnancy, dr said it was okay, and I always made sure it was toasted so the meat wasn't cold. You'll be fine

  • Like others have said, listeria outbreaks are more common in fruits and vegetables and no one is telling you to avoid those. I ate fresh lunch meat in homemade sandwiches and from reputable delis throughout my last pregnancy. Of course, do whatever makes you comfortable.
