I feel like all the foods they keep recalling for listeria (Hummus, and now cheese) aren't even the foods we are told to AVOID for listeria (such as deli meat). Frustrating indeed!!
I always thought it was weird that there was such a focus on deli meat when listeria can grow pretty much anywhere. Like, you're more likely to get listeria from unwashed fruits and veggies than from deli meat that has been stored correctly (ie, not sitting out for hours), but no one ever gets all uppity about reminding pregnant women to wash their fruit.
@kitkat8387 It's not that deli meat is inherently more likely to have listeria, just that the (small) plurality of outbreaks have happened in deli turkey specifically.

@kitkat8387 In my opinion, yes. But others might vehemently disagree. Basically, listeria could show up in any food that's been refrigerated for a while and hasn't been heated before eating.
According to Emily Oster, "avoiding ham sandwiches would have lowered my risk of Listeria infection from 1 in 8,333 to 1 in 8,255."

DH has been on me about how much deli meat I've eaten this pregnancy, but the craving is real. It's not like I'm getting sketchy meat from the gas station. My local Jimmy John's practically knows me by name.
@Magheeta I've been all about Jimmy John's, too, this pregnancy. DH and I are actually going to get subs for lunch today as a last hurrah before we move. No Jimmy John's in Maine
