Failed My Glucose Test UPDATE

edited February 2017 in September 2017 Moms
I took the 1 hour glucose test after my appt yesterday and got a 170, which is a giant FAIL (they want your score under 140). I know I'll have to do a 3 hour test before an official gd diagnosis, but I'm still kind of bummed out.
I already eat a relatively low-sugar diet, so there shouldn't be too much of a change to my lifestyle, but it's still a bummer to know that something might be wrong.
Has anyone else had to take the 1 hour glucose test in the first trimester? If so, how did you do?

Update (2/10): I took the 3-hr test this morning, which was an ordeal. The 100g drink is SO much worse than the 50g one, I'm glad that my morning sickness was better today because I wouldn't have kept that drink down on Monday. The lab assistants gave me a cookie afterwards, which was nice of them, and it gave me enough energy to walk over to Starbucks for a panini  Now I just have to wait for the results to come in.

Update (2/11): So my results came in, and if anything my blood sugar results dropped too low. This might be why you don't have women in their first trimester take this test.

Re: Failed My Glucose Test UPDATE

  • I'm sorry about failing your test, I hope it goes better with the 3 hr one.  My midwife said it was cruel to do the sugar tests in first tri, and I agree with her!  I haven't had the test yet, but I came in at around 135 with DS, and our cutoff was 140 as well.  GL with the next one, let us know how it goes.

  • I agree with ColoradoHiker that it seems a bit early to be testing.  If you fail the 3 hour they will put you on a pretty strict diet.  Good luck and keep us updated.
  • There's also a ton of "hidden" sugar sources that you might not readily associate with sugar like peas, fruit, potatoes, bread, pasta-you know the only things that make nausea go away in the first tri! Good luck with the 3 hour test!

@ColoradoHiker It was NOT a fun test, I'll tell you what. Sugary things have been triggering my morning sickness all week, so I was pretty much fighting my body the whole hour to keep the dang thing down. I'm hoping the 3 hour test will show that the 170's a fluke.

@Becky012016 I have pcos, so I'm pretty good at knowing where my sugars come from, but my nausea has pretty much thrown my diet out the window. It's hard to eat a high-protein and high-fiber diet when just about everything makes you miserable. Yesterday I was pretty much running off a glass of milk and an apple, and I have a feeling that affected my numbers.

  • i was type 2 before getting pregnant so i do not have to do the GD test, but i'm sorry it came back so high. good luck on the 3 hour test!

  • Agree with PP. Seems early. Good Luck. Fingers crossed the three hour test goes better. Sorry you have to go through it.

  • Had you eaten before your test? There is hidden sugar in EVERYTHING. I didn't eat before my glucose test last time, but honestly I have no idea what the rules for that are though. Is it okay to not eat? I passed my test...
  • @daniellelynette I ate an egg and toast before my 1 hour and passed with flying colors but the next week I had a cold and ate Cap'n Crunch right before my normal check up and failed that mini test. What you eat definitely affects the outcome lol
  • @daniellelynette Apparently they recommend that you eat something high in protein before your test, which I didn't do because I heard about it after the fact. I think this is why the glucose test shouldn't be done while people are still suffering from morning sickness, it's not a good representation of our normal diet/health

  • Is there a reason why they are testing you so early?
  • So odd they tested you this early...is it because of the PCOS? I don't recall doing it till second tri last time...and for me, I must've lucked out because the orange flavored drink I had wasn't terrible and I didn't think the test was as sucky as everyone said it would be. I did eat protein in the morning as well...maybe ask if you can do that for the 3-hour test if they steer you toward that one...Good luck!

  • I had the lemon lime one and it just tasted like sweet flat sprite! I always heard everyone complain about how bad it was and I was so nervous but it wasn't bad at all.
  • I had no idea they did the GD test in the first trimester.  I was well into my second trimester when I did it last time.  Did they say why they were testing so early?  I'm sorry you failed.  Good luck on the 3 hour.  I hope you don't end up with GD.
  • @daniellelynette @Texafornian They tested me early because I have PCOS and a BMI of 30. My doctor thought my bmi was a more important reason to test, but I thought that pcos would be more relevant since it can cause pre-diabetic conditions.

It's not that the drink was *bad* (like a flat orange Fanta), but the sugar triggered my morning sickness/heartburn.

  • Oh I see, well hopefully the 3 hour one goes better! And it wasn't you, I have a bunch of friends who all complained about how terrible it was and how it just tasted nasty and they had to gag it down and stuff. Total drama queens trying to scare me. I was scared for no reason lol also, my last pregnancy I loved sugar. I ate a box of those blue raspberry pop tarts for breakfast one time lmao. Oops.
  • Wow that's so early! I failed by 1 point with DD and had to do the 3 hour and it was awful. My husband was with me thankfully bc I was really really lightheaded afterwards

  • @carawasa I was miserable after the 1 hour test, I can't imagine how much worse I'll feel after the 3 hour one.

@daniellelynette I also heard a lot of horror stories about the glucose test, but the drink itself wasn't the worst part. I did gag a bit, but I've also been throwing up after drinking water, so it wasn't the drink's fault.

  • Ugh that's awful! I agree, testing in 1st trip is torture, Protein has been one my aversions! And carbs are what help my nausea. Hopefully it was a fluke and you'll do well on the 3 hr one!
  • @ashley2824 Thanks! I've got my fingers crossed for the 3 hour one to go well.

  •  I'm so sorry that you had to take the test in the first trimester. I don't know if it makes you feel any better, but tons of women pass the three-hour that have failed the one hour; Myself included.  Typically you have to fast before that test for at least 12 hours.  Good luck!
  • I have to go this week.  They are doing it so early because I'm advanced maternal age.  Ugh.  I am not looking forward to it.  I've been so nauseous without doing that nasty orange drink!

  • I also don't get the horror stories about the drink - for my test it was just fruit punch. Like the kind in the cardboard box that people put in their kids' lunches. I can literally buy the exact same brand at Sprouts. I don't particularly like fruit punch but people always talked like it was this secret horrendous concoction of nastiness.

But I can say that during the first trimester with my first and now with this pregnancy I have been eating the crap out of carbs just to keep my tummy settled. There is no way I would pass a glucose test right now. It seems nutty to make you take it right now. I would hope they would wait a bit to do the 3 hour, or maybe let you re-do the 1 hour at a less insane point in your pregnancy?

  • @MySallyGirl that's so weird that they're doing it now. I'm AMA...had my DD at 41 and am 43 now and there's been no mention of the glucose test thus far. :) I go back at 11 weeks so i'm sure it'll come up.
I just looked in the book I made my daughter (documented the pregnancy) and I did it at the 24 week appointment (2014).

My dr scheduled me for a early one as well. Mainly because I failed last time and I had a 9 lb baby. I'm sure I'll fail again and have to go back for the 3 hour test.
  • I dread the glucose tolerance test. With my first pregnancy, I sat in there and drank that whole awful orange syrupy drink only to find out they gave me an expired bottle!! Wtf?! Not only did I have to get off work again to re-do the test, but I had to drink that junk again!! Not fun when you're super nauseous already!

  • Holy moly! I've never heard of a glucose test this early. That just seems mean to give a mom most likely still battling nausea one of the world's most disgusting "drinks". :(

  • @awildrose I definitely felt like it wasn't the best timing, but luckily I managed to keep it down the entire hour. I was miserable, but a little proud of myself

  • I hope the 3 hour test goes better. I won't have mine till 2nd tri and my doctor just has me go eat beignets and drink chocolate milk then come in.
  • Ugh... I'm sorry. I've heard of several people passing the 3 hour after failing the first, so FX! Definitely seems weird (and cruel!) to do it in 1st semester.

And, umm.. where can I sign up for this chocolate milk beignet test?

  • It's quite amazing. I love my doctor for this and so many more reasons! With DD I didn't know there was the meal option and I thought he was joking. He said if you don't like beignets you can have a doughnut. I can't wait for GD test!
  • Add me to team beignets for glucose test please. That sounds amazing!!!

Now all I can think about is a cream-filled doughnut...mmmmm.....

  • I asked if I could just eat really sugary foods. No dice. Apparently my OB likes a "controlled environment." ;)
  • I know a few people who failed the 1 hr and went on to pass the 3. Good luck and fingers crossed for you!

I also had no idea they did that in 1st tri. I think I was around 22-24 weeks last time. I think with DS' pregnancy I would have been able to do it in 1st tri because I had zero morning sickness/general stomach upset. This time? No way.  :s

  • @Lizlann  I could have written what you said.  I actually kind of liked its flatness and somewhat blandness.  It was watered down, flat orange Tang.  I didn't get the whole horror of the drink, other than I wouldn't normally drink something like that at 8am, but whatever.  It could be a whole lot worse!

I've never had to do my glucose test in first tri, but I can tell you I've failed the one-hour both times I've taken it and gone on to pass the three-hour with flying colors.  I'm going to request a three-hour only this time, because I'm tried of wasting time in the lab.  And I also need to ask about this chocolate milk/doughnut test.  Because I am so down for that.

  • @SummerGirl21 I know, right? That chocolate milk/donut test sounds heavenly. So much better than flat Fanta.

  • I think a lot of people fail the 1 hour- it has a much lower threshold than the 3 hour.
