Raise your hand if...

you're having shortness of breath or a hard time catching your breath, especially at night.  I woke up to pee last night and when I tried laying back down I thought I was going to die.  I had to go outside to catch a breath of the cold air.  I've had it a couple times before but last night it took me about 30 minutes to calm down and get back to sleep.
I'm 20 weeks.
Thanks ladies, I'm trying not to freak out at every little change my body is going through but if need be I'll call my dr.

Re: Raise your hand if...

  • Yes, with both pregnancies, and it is the worst. Getting a humidifier and sleeping both propped up and on my side actually helped me, though. Also move slowly...like grandma slow, when going from lying down to sitting/standing, no sudden movements.
  • Loading the player...
  • Me!!! I do have asthma, but have realized every day especially later in the day and at night it gets worse. I also have to stay off of my back unless I'm off to one side a bit.
I did talk to my doctor about it last week and he told me especially with my asthma it is normal, but I would certainly bring it up to yours.
It is a scary feeling, but when it does happen just try to sit up and relax and take small breaths to calm yourself down.
  • I have asthma as well so I'm sure that escalates all the breathing issues for me. Some days I'm totally fine then other days I get out of the shower and have to sit down for 10 mins to catch my breath.
  • Happened to me yesterday morning.... took me about 20-30 minutes to finally catch my breath. I just have a bad habit of moving too quickly (or like a non-prego), and am still trying to train myself to stay off my back.

So you're not worried it's a blood clot in your lung at all? I'm probably making it worse by obsessing over it.  Ugh
  • Me! I have an inhaler that I've had to use more often. It's for my exercise imduced asthma, but my doc said I could use it for when I'm short of breath. Be sure not to lie on your back.
  • Haha yup.

To make it even funnier, we booked a trip to Hawaii 2 weeks before our BFP, with intentions to do a bunch of hiking and more strenuous hikes. My H has been "training" to keep up with me on them.  Yeah, he really doesn't need to.  I'll be the one stopping and gasping for air after 5 minutes.

  • Yes this is me sometimes even just sitting on the couch.  Happened yesterday matter of fact.  I put my arms about my head to stretch my chest out.  I get winded just going up and down the stairs to my basement with a load of laundry.  That's why I've switched to swimming for exercise.  Its so much easier on my body.  I can't seem to break my body of sleeping on my back though.

I'm having the couch issue right now and it's driving my insane.  To make matters worse my 2 year old thinks mommy is the only place he can lay today.  Like get off me and go play with some toys!  Mama needs to breathe!
  • Yep. Pretty much anything I do results in SOB.
  • Thanks everyone, I just need to get a handle on this anxiety I think.  It's making the breathing part scarier than it needs to be.
  • Another person with asthma here. And I'm having terrible pregnancy rhinitis that's especially bad at night. I wake up so congested in the morning. Like someone else said putting a humidifier in my room at night and running it all night has helped some. And I've started sleeping propped up on an extra pillow which is definitely helping some also. Other than that I've just been trying to stay really on top of all my asthma meds to keep everything under control and I'm taking Claritin everyday for allergies even when I don't feel like I need it.

I've noticed that sometimes when I wake up at night and feel like I'm suffocating I've been laying on my bad. Apparently I roll onto my back a lot while I'm sleeping. That seems to make the whole thing worse for me. If you have that problem maybe try putting a pillow behind you to help discourage you from back sleeping.

I'm so congested at night as well which I'm sure doesn't help.  I've been trying to sleep on my side but maybe I just need to try sleep sitting up!

I do. I had it with my last pregnancy too. My iron has been really low each pregnancy and I recently found out it can really affect your breathing. I've been on iron pills for a few weeks now and the shortness of breath has been getting better. I would definitely ask your doc about it if you're not sure how your iron levels are.

eta: it's also a pretty common pregnancy symptom as well.

    ....no. :|
I spoke to my Dr about it during my last appointment and she didn't make a huge fuss over it... told me to prop myself up so I'm slightly inclined and to get up slower. It's something I have been more aware of and working on since that appointment.

  • I get breathless quite a bit -- even just talking gets me out of breath sometimes. I've noticed this happen with a lot of other women at work during their pregnancies...I think it's just part and parcel to everything our body is going through right now.
  • I've recently experienced heart palpitations, mostly at night before bed.  Spoke to OB who said that's very normal and encouraged me to let her know if it ever lasts long periods of time.  So far I've been able to take slow breaths and it disappears in moments.
  • I have shortness of breath after I eat and going up and down steps.
  • Yes. And also just a PSA for ladies with asthma, even mild, bring an inhaler to the hospital. I didn't even think of it with my first, and I was having trouble breathing after he was born and kept coughing, and it took at least 2 hours to get an inhaler from the hospital pharmacy. Coughing + stitches in sensitive places = not fun.
  • This is definitely starting to get worse for me... I had to stop myself in the middle of speaking in a meeting yesterday to catch my breath.

Yes. This. @LOTON01 I have to mentally prepare myself for it! I did not remember it being a chore this early on with DD1.
