Easing the pain of PIO shots??

Hi all,

I've been using PIO shots for the past three days to get ready for my FET on Tuesday. I used them for my last cycle (which ended in MC) and had no complications or too much pain. Now my behind has so much pulled-muscle-like soreness it's hard to walk! I have my DH massage the area for a few minutes after he gives the shots and then put a heating pad on the area afterwards but this doesn't seem to help! Last night I tried warming up then shot a bit before it went in but pretty sure that did nothing. Does anyone have any advice to give that might help? Would love to hear! Thanks in advance for your help:) I appreciate it!

I didn't have any trouble with my PIO shots, so unfortunately I can't give personal advice. However, a lot of people told me to walk/move a lot after the injection to help ease muscle tension/pain. Hope that helps!

Thanks @APM_SLP I'll try that! I have been heating the area afterwards for about 20 minutes but since that isn't really working I'll try moving around!

I put the vial of meds in my bra for about 10 min beforehand and that seems to warm it up. Waking around after (or even doing squats) has helped too. Also make sure the injection is going in the correct spot, the lower it is on the butt the more it seems to hurt/ leave lumps. Sometimes it just hurts more than others. Last cycle I had the worst luck with them and this time I haven't had too many issues.

Definitely make certain you are doing them on the outer-upper area, more like the hip. Also, get a foam roller and use that afterwards. It really helps better than a massage for me. It gets deeper in the muscle so it helps distribute it better. I know your pain, though. I still walk around feeling like I have a pulled muscle, but at least I am not limping around and can sit/lay down.

I don't have to take the shots, but before I started any treatments I was researching as much stuff as possible and pinning them to my pinterest board. These were a couple of suggestions I had found.

also, i find that if i stand when DH gives me my shot it hurts more. So I lay on the couch or the bed, relax my muscle and then he doesn't give me any warning and just goes for it. I find that if he starts counting to 3, I squeeze my muscle and it hurts so much more. Otherwise, I just do what everyone else says - warm it for at least 10 minutes.

Make sure you are using the grey needle - the 22 gauge, not the 18 gauge to inject. You should have two needles for the injection. Do not use the same needle to draw up and inject. The rubber stopper dulls the needle a bit which can also make it painful. Plus you want to use the small of the two needles for your injection. Good luck tonight!! @emgem819

@DDRGirlie thank you for the tips! My RE made me do a demo at her office with both needles and the PIO bottle so she made sure I knew exactly how to do it! Thank goodness because otherwise I'd prob be clueless!

I tried the tips everyone suggested and I'm happy to say so far no pain! Yay! So here's what seemed to have worked for me (I realize everyone is different):
-after drawing up shot, place a warm washcloth or heating pad around it for a few minutes before having it inserted
-after the shot, have DH (or yourself) massage area for a few minutes with fingers
-apply heating pad to area for 20 minutes
-walk around or do squats after heating for 5-10 minutes to get blood flowing

so hoping this continues to work and tomorrow I continue to have no pain! Thanks to all of you for your helpful advice!

My tip would be to get the hot hands (the instant heating pad things you can get on amazon in bulk or at fleet farm etc) they have ones with sticky lining meant to stick to clothes. I put the sticky side on the inside of my underwear and just wear the heating pad through out the day. Has pretty much removed any soreness for me (the 1st day I didn't do this and I was achy all day). Also the DH massages before and after.

My RE had me heat up some water, draw up the oil in the syringe, put the cap back on then put it in the water for a minute or two. Then after that change to the 22 gauge needle. It helped so much! Then like other ladies said, walk around and use those mucsles afterward to try and prevent knots.

Have DH give the shot slowly. I find I have more pain if he goes too fast.

Have you tried lying on your stomach while DH gives the injection? It hurt way more when I was standing, even when I took the weight off the side I was getting the injection in. I haven't had any issues since we switched and I'm on my stomach. Good luck!

I haven't yet used POI, but my first FET is coming up later this month and I've been soliciting similar advice for less painful POI injections.

A friend mentioned that before her DH gave her the injection, she would turn on the hot water in the shower. As soon as he had done the injection, she'd jump in the hot shower and bend, stretch, and do squats to move the oil around. She said that the combination of warm water and movement really worked for her.
