Hi gals,

Is it just me or this a new thing...i have had multiple postive hpts over the past 3-4 days and called my OB for a blood test to confirm like i did with DS but the nurse told me i have to be at least 5 days late so the test is "accurate".So now i must wait til Tuesday for a blood draw! Im gonna go POAS crazy lol

  • What? I've never had to wait that long for betas. Weird.

  • That's ridiculous! I had my first blood draw at 4w..was like a day past missed period. I would've gone in before but it was the weekend!

This is my third pregnancy (one loss) and I have never even had a blood test to confirm a pregnancy. My OB office just does a pregnancy test and a viability ultrasound at 8 weeks
Same for me. Per the nurse I talked to, my doc only does betas if he suspects a progesterone issue, AMA, or more than three losses.

  • Mine is just the 8 week ultrasound.  They don't  confirm with blood or pregnancy test.  :/

  • My OB doesn't do blood tests. The home pregnancy tests are pretty acurate so they don't need to do blood work. I won't see my OB until I'm 9 weeks for an US.
  • Yup, with both this pregnancy and with DS, I haven't had betas done.  I was always under the impression that it was more for women who have issues, like AMA, previous losses, etc.

  • My OB doesn't typically do them, either... only with specific reason for concern.

  • My dr said I could go as soon as I got my BFP. Didn't have time and ended up going a few days after my missed period, but I still had the option to go sooner. I'm seeing on these boards that some drs are super strict about some things regarding closer monitoring which I don't understand

I think the vast majority of those doctors you are hearing about are RE's. They monitor very closely for the first few weeks before releasing to an OB due to the nature of their patients. They did IVF or IUI or medication triggers to get pregnant and it's the RE'S responsibility to monitor for the first signs of pregnancy and to do everything possible to make sure labwork/hormones are in normal limits after all that hard work/money.

  • When I made my appt they did ask me if I wanted to do a beta test but I said no since I got multiple positives. I'm not sure when the beta test would have happened if I chose to do it. With DD I came in for ultrasound and they confirm when I pee in a cup. I got a positive 1/2 and I won't have my 1st appt until 1/27 when I will be 7 weeks.

  • I am apparently way out of the loop I didn't realize this was even an option. I just took a zillion tests and figured I had to wait to see the doctor at 7 weeks.
  • My OB (not an RE) told me last month at my annual exam to call right away if i got a postive home test which makes it even more confusing ..if they dont let you make an appointment until you get a blood test but you have to wait for the blood test to make an appointment LOL

  • I got my BFP on 1/4, called OB on 1/6, bc my yearly was on 1/11.   They gave me a script for bloodwork for 1/15.  OB said it's bc the betas would be so low any earlier that she would require me to get a second set.  This alleviates additional blood work. I'm AMA and she isn't concerned.  I did for my own mental wellness take a digital test, bc they are supposed to be less sensitive. So when that was positive I felt like I have to be doubling accordingly.

Also they will be calling to schedule my ultrasound and prenatal visit as soon as bloodwork comes back good. So it's annoying to have to wait but soon enough it'll be here!

  • My OB doesn't do them either unless there's a concern. They weren't even going to have me see the doctor at all until 13 weeks, but I asked if I could have an ultrasound because I tend to worry.
  • @Sugargirl1019 you're right, but I just see a regular OB and I've been getting blood work since my BFP. Granted I had issues previously, but even with that PG, I got early blood work. I guess it's more of the norm for OB's to not do them, I just lucked out.

Same I guess. First pregnancy the doc had me come right in. 2nd one was with my current doc and they said "see ya in 8 weeks." That one ended in a loss and this pregnancy, the new doc said come right in...
Of course I'm AMA and PGAL so that could definitely play in...
