@KirstinH88 oh my gosh I'm so sorry. What a mess. Thinking of you also. Hope you can stay mostly on top of your financial goals and that he's not unemployed long. But what awful timing for you.

@KirstinH88 What terrible news.  I am so sorry you're dealing with this added stress, lady.  Is there any chance he'll be back to work with the same company by delivery time?  I know that, here anyway, you must work for a company for 1,250 hours in the last 12 months to qualify for FMLA.

@thecavfamily There is a chance that he could go back to the same company, just not sure if it will be by delivery time. Also, not sure that I would want him to be sitting around waiting for them to hire him back. He was pretty far up the ladder, well-liked, and very knowledgeable. So I'm sure once business picks up again, they would love to have him back. Just not sure when that would be. He's worked there for 5 years and seen many people come and go through lay offs. It was just so unexpected that it would happen to him. Damn construction field.... Good news is, this mama has ZERO time to be losing out on money, so I've already applied for unemployment benefits for him  :D:D:D Hopefully they will kick in soon, and be a decent amount...

@KirstinH88 :(  Way to get on the unemployment benefits so quickly, K. I, too, am my husband's personal secretary (it's a lot easier than waiting for him to do get stuff done).
  • Options
@thecavfamily I'm totally his personal secretary. I pay our bills, I fill out and mail any paperwork, I make doctor's appointments. People often joke that he is going to secretly get a vasectomy (cuz ya know baby #4 is on the way) and I tell them that he wouldn't even know how to schedule an appointment with his doctor!

@KirstinH88 so sorry to hear this!  What a stressful day for you guys...will you guys be ok if it takes a while for him to find something?  Also, were the kids on his insurance or yours?

@cafedisco I guess we will be ok. Since he will get unemployment, all the bills will get paid. But everything else will be very minimal. And we were all on his insurance. So I have to go and enroll everyone in insurance through my work. Luckily, I will be keeping us on the same carrier because I don't want the headache of all that right now. But it kind of sucks because my job gives me a $140/month "bonus" if you are covered on insurance elsewhere (i.e. Spouse). So I will be losing that $140/month in addition to paying for healthcare premiums.

@cafedisco thank you. I keep trying to tell myself that. Maybe there's some good to this that I just can't see yet. I honestly just feel really defeated because we waited 3 1/2 to even TTC again after having DS because we wanted to be more financially secure (obviously if we were amazingly secure then we would have tons in savings and this wouldn't phase us, but...). I feel like all our hard work to be financially secure could snowball out of control if he doesn't find employment soon. And again, just completely shocked because we felt his position was secure. Just so many emotions. I'm drained. It's not quite 7pm, and I just want to close my eyes.

@KirstinH88  I'm so sorry to hear that your DH was laid off, I can only imagine the stress that brings.  I will be thinking of you guys and hope that a new job is obtained quickly.  When my DH and I were waiting for the right time to have a baby we were constantly told if you wait for the right time it will never come.  Although you had plans and are heartbroken they aren't being followed as you planned, you will make it.  It will work out in the end one way or another.
