Re: Gtyk: Books
Favorite genre: Not a genre Ik but short easy reads with a little bit of romance nothing erotic
Least favorite genre or things you stray away from: serious sci-fi or mystery, some is ok
Favorite book quote: yeah I don't read that much
Pregnancy/Parenting/Baby book recommendations: none
Favorite Children's Book: Elephant and Piggy books by Mo Willems or Pat The Cat's New Shoes
What kind of reader are you? (e.g. "I hate reading", "I read all the time") I read sometimes. I'll read two or three books, stop for a month then pick some up again. I enjoy getting a book from a thrift store solely based on the cover art and name and not reading the back.
Favorite genre: Literary fiction.
Least favorite genre or things you stray away from:
Nicholas Sparks. I wish I liked more non-fiction but most of it bores me.
Favorite book quote: "It was more important to Lawrence to be respected than to be known."
from The Post Birthday World by Lionel Shriver (referring to someone not being able to be themselves, lest they feel judged)
Pregnancy/Parenting/Baby book recommendations:
Operating Instructions by Anne Lammott
Favorite Children's Book:
My son adores everything from Usborne, and I love them all, too. Otherwise, Dr. Seuss is still my jam.
What kind of reader are you?
I used to read at least a book a month. Now I read a handful a year, which makes me sad. I don't have the attention span for it any more. I go in spurts, though.
Favorite genre: Generally fiction, particularly books set in older times (The Pillars series, the Century series, Outlander etc.) but I like my fair share of non-fiction such as Shake Hands with The Devil. I really am not a picky book reader. If someone recommends a book to me I'll give it a chance.
Least favorite genre or things you stray away from: Sci-fi or anything supernatural aside from Harry Potter and Twilight.
Favorite book quote: Too many that make me laugh out loud
Pregnancy/Parenting/Baby book recommendations: I have Ina May's Guide to Breastfeeding which is great as well as Mayo Clinic's Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy
Favorite Children's Book: Anything Robert Munsch or Little Pilgrim's Progress by Helen L. Taylor. I also have this really, really old Christmas book from when I was a kid.
What kind of reader are you? I go through phases but generally I really enjoy reading. Which reminds me that I should probably get as much reading in as I can before baby comes along.

I also loved A Visit From The Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan SO MUCH that I now recommend the book when asked.
Favorite genre:
fiction, most of it.
Least favorite genre or things you stray away from:
I have always avoided 19th century lit but one college class changed that. Not enough to start reading all of the classics, but I'm more open to reading them if I ever find the time.
Favorite book quote:
I've been meaning to get the bolded part of this quote tattooed but wanted to include the whole passage here for context:
“I think we are well advised to keep on nodding terms with the people we used to be, whether we find them attractive company or not. Otherwise they turn up unannounced and surprise us, come hammering on the mind’s door at 4 a.m. of a bad night and demand to know who deserted them, who betrayed them, who is going to make amends. We forget all too soon the things we thought we could never forget. We forget the loves and the betrayals alike, forget what we whispered and what we screamed, forget who we were.”
(Joan Didion, again, lol.)
Pregnancy/Parenting/Baby book recommendations:
The Highly Sensitive Child was a fantastic book for my super colicky, super sensitive baby.
Favorite Children's Book:
We just started getting into Shel Silverstein. I used to LOVE my Shel books when I was her age.
What kind of reader are you? (e.g. "I hate reading", "I read all the time")
Love reading but I clearly prioritize other things over it now.
Kurt Vonnegut books are also pretty awesome, if you like satire and some science fiction. His best work is Slaughterhouse-Five, and Cat's' Cradle is pretty amazing too.
Anne Rice is the queen of gothic fiction (and some erotica). I tore through the first 3 books of the Vampire Chronicles when I was in high school. No one writes like her (i.e. Twilight is a joke compared to Anne Rice books!)
Anita Brookner writes lovely and emotional novels about people's internal stories and secrets, and love. After reading one of her novels, Incidents in the Rue Laugier, I wanted more of her stories. Bay of Angels, Brief Lives and Hotel du Lac are also great reads.
Maya Angelou, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings... everyone must read this book. If it's the only Maya Angelou you ever read... read this one.
Diana Gabaldon is my newest favorite obsession! She created the Outlander Series, which are by far the best historical fiction novels. Yes, I watch the show too... which she is a major consultant on. I love the characters and the action & adventure... and the love story, of course. If you like historical fiction and romance, I guarantee you'll fall in love with this series. Once you start reading you can't stop, and the bonus of seeing it brought to life on the screen is even more fun!
Favorite genre: Classics, Historical Fiction, Romance and Poetry
Least favorite genre or things you stray away from: Horror or Thrillers, not really my style. Although I did enjoy Gone Girl and Girl on the Train...
Favorite book quote: "when someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time." -Maya Angelou
Pregnancy/Parenting/Baby book recommendations: I don't have any
Favorite Children's Book: From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, by E.L. Konigsburg. This is a Children's Literature book, this was my favorite book when I was kid... I think I read it when I was 9 or 10.
What kind of reader are you? (e.g. "I hate reading", "I read all the time") I love to read!
I don't think I have a favorite book. Favorite author? yes Anything by Nora Roberts. I'm collecting every book of hers. She has over 200 books and I have only 48 left. Oh and of course Harry Potter.
Favorite genre:
Hmmmmm...I have to say fiction. Anything from mystery and thriller to romance or historical fiction
Least favorite genre or things you stray away from: Westerns. But then I cant get into Western movies so books would be worse for me.
Favorite book quote: "It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be."
Pregnancy/Parenting/Baby book recommendations: Sorry none that I can think of right now.
Favorite Children's Book: Young child I would say Dr. Suess books. Older children anything R.L. Stine. Oh and for other Goosebump lovers. He has books in adult fiction too. "Red Rain" is one.
What kind of reader are you? (e.g. "I hate reading", "I read all the time") I read all the time. Im a fast reader. I can read a 300 page book in 2 hours. I check out 5 books from the library every week and read them all before I go back in the following week. My only downtime to read though is during nap and after bedtime so Im glad I read fast. Otherwise it would take a week to read one book.
Favorite genre: I go for fiction in general, but I really love a good mystery/thriller.
Least favorite genre or things you stray away from: Romance
Favorite book quote: N/A
Pregnancy/Parenting/Baby book recommendations: N/A
Favorite Children's Book: I loved the Eloise books.
What kind of reader are you? I really love to read, I've got several books going right now. I'm excited to read everyone's recommendations!

Favorite book(s): I love Agatha Christie novels, Jane Austen, Harry Potter series, Narnia series, Little House series, The Secret Life of Bees, The Help, Into Thin Air, The Girl on the Train, The Life of Pi, whatever I'm reading at the moment!
Favorite genre: I couldn't even say, my taste is pretty eclectic but I do love mysteries.
Least favorite genre or things you stray away from:
I'll give anything a chance if it's recommended by a good friend but biographies tend to bore me.
Favorite book quote: "We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams..." (That's actually from a poem by Arthur O'Shaughnessy but it's my favorite literary quote).
Pregnancy/Parenting/Baby book recommendations: I think good old Mayo Clinic and What to Expect are great for a FTM.
Favorite Children's Book: I love Sandra Boyntim and so does DD! A Wrinkle in Time was my fave growing up.
What kind of reader are you? (e.g. "I hate reading", "I read all the time") I read about a book a week- I'm in a book club that meets once a month and I always have a new series that I'm trying to get through.
I love classics so Jane Austen is also enjoyable for me too.
Favorite book(s): My overall favorite series is probably Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time (finished by Brandon Sanderson). I also love Roger Zelazny, JRR Tolkien, CS Lewis, Anne McCaffery and Jane Austen to name a few. I started reading the Harry Potter series when I was 12, and I can't wait to read it to my kids.
Favorite genre: Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Historical Fiction, and some classics
Least favorite genre or things you stray away from: For me it's less about the quality of the writing and more about how much the book stimulates my curiosity and imagination.
Favorite book quote: I love many, but the first that came to mind were from Douglas Adams.
"Curiously enough, the only thing that went through the mind of the bowl of petunias as it fell was Oh no, not again. Many people have speculated that if we knew exactly why the bowl of petunias had thought that we would know a lot more about the nature of the Universe than we do now."
Pregnancy/Parenting/Baby book recommendations: I really liked the Happiest Baby on the Block book. It helped us a lot with DS1.
Favorite Children's Book: Soooo many.
1. The Book With No Pictures - BJ Novak
2. Dragons Love Tacos - Adam Rubin
3. The Dark - Lemony Snicket
4. Where the Wild Things Are - Maurice Sendak
5. Harold and the Purple Crayon - Crockett Johnson
6. Press Here - Herve Tulet
What kind of reader are you? (e.g. "I hate reading", "I read all the time"). I was such an avid reader as a kid that my parents couldn't ground me; instead they'd have me "go outside." So I'd take my book outside. I don't read nearly enough now, but when I do pick up a book I devour it.
DS1 - 7/2011, DD 12/2012, DS2 - 4/2014, MMC - 12/2015
Favorite genre: Fantasy, mystery, science fiction
Least favorite genre or things you stray away from: Romance
Favorite book quote: “It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.”
Pregnancy/Parenting/Baby book recommendations: We receives the American Pediatric Society book from a friend's mother, who is an insurance agent. I like that it is more of a "reference" than a "read."
Favorite Children's Book: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and Madeline
What kind of reader are you? (e.g. "I hate reading", "I read all the time") I read all summer long, and then I don't read anything during the school year...no time.
Favorite genre: Oh god, I like most things but if we're being VERY honest, young adult
Least favorite genre or things you stray away from: I hate sci fi and fantasy (though I liked Harry Potter)
Favorite book quote: "Vera said 'Why do you feel you have to turn everything into a story?' So I told her why: Because if I tell the story, I control the version. Because if I tell the story, I can make you laugh and I would rather have you laugh at me than feel sorry for me. Because if I tell the story, it doesn't hurt as much. Because if I tell the story, I can get on with it."
Pregnancy/Parenting/Baby book recommendations: I am just starting with these, but I enjoy the Mayo Clinic book!
Favorite Children's Book: Oh god, SO MANY! Like @Sassenach1743, I loved From The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankwieler, plus Anne of Green Gables, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and so many more.
What kind of reader are you? (e.g. "I hate reading", "I read all the time") I love to read! Since I moved out of NYC (and stopped taking the subway), I read less - I used to do a hundred or more books a year, now I shoot for 30-40.
BFP #1: 5/16
MMC at 8 weeks: 6/16
BFP #2: 10/16
Sweet baby boy arrived 7/7/17!
@michelle04us 300 pages in 2 hours! Holy cow! A little jealous but at the same time it's nice to get sucked in and enjoy it a while.
@chiquita928 have you read Fallen by Lauren Kate? I have not but I see it's a series, something is holding me back maybe that it's fantasy. I secretly like young adult probably bc they're so easy and light I can put it down at any time. I didn't realize I picked up a ya fiction book this weekend and finished it in 24 hours. Nice little weekend vacay for me I guess.
Favorite book(s): Everything by Hemingway (helloooo @virginiaunicorn11 ) , Leon de Winter, Isaac Asimov, Hermann Hesse (hiii @SpongeWorthy - my mind was blown by Steppenwolf ), Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer (I cried through the whole book... but please skip the movie it's nothing like the book), everything by Paul Auster, everything by Douglas Adams (hey there @Xath ), and Isaac Asimov, and Kim Stanley Robinson, and Neal Stephenson (yes big SciFi fan here), then the obligatory Russian background classic faves - everything by Tolstoi.
Favorite genre: Broad categories- 1. Classic fiction literature (1a Russians, 1b French, 1c Germans; 2. Scifi (mostly classic but also contemporary); 3. Contemporary NYC based and like minded authors (Auster, Safran Foer, ...)
Least favorite genre or things you stray away from: Fantasy
Favorite book quote: "The stars, like dust, encircle me in living mists of light; and all of space I seem to see in one vast burst of sight". (Isaac Asimov, Stars Like Dust).
Pregnancy/Parenting/Baby book recommendations: No Clue!
Favorite Children's Book: Not sure...
What kind of reader are you? I enjoy reading very much! In recent years sadly more and more work related literature keeps drowning out the kind of literature I love...trying to make a solid effort to make time for reading for enjoyment not work.
A Storm of Swords and A Feast for Crows - GRRM
Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien (such a classic, it's never gets old to me)
The Witching Hour and The Vampire Lestat - Anne Rice (as someone mentioned above, no one writes quite like Anne Rice. I love the settings and melancholy atmosphere of her books.
A World of Ice and Fire - GRRM (I love diving into the history of the seven kingdoms and reading about all the Targaryen Kings.
A Shadow Over Innsmouth - HP Lovecraft
Favorite genre: Fantasy and Horror
Least favourite genre or things you stray away from: Anything romantic or too sappy
Favorite book quote: "Say one thing for Logan Ninefingers, say he's a cunt"
from Last Argument of Kings by Joe Abercrombie. I don't know what it was about this line, but it came out of nowhere and made me laugh.
Pregnancy/Parenting/Baby book recommendations: I admittedly don't have much, but I plan on raiding my midwife's shelf of books the next time I'm there.
Favourite Children's Book: Probably "The Very Hungry Caterpillar"
What kind of reader are you? (e.g. "I hate reading", "I read all the time"): I try to read all the time, and set reading goals for myself at the beginning of each year. This year I'm aiming to read 12 books.
@a_wee_bit_terrified I adore the Very Hungry Caterpillar, too! My toddler is obsessed with books... but guess what is the ONE book he will not sit through?! Of course! It makes me so sad.
Oh, God, I don't know how to compile a list of favorites. It truly depends on what I'm feeling at the time. I adore the Killer Angels series (Michael and Jeff Sharra), though Killer Angels is my favorite of the three and I have a total literary crush on Joshua Chamberlain. I tore through the Harry Potter series when it came out, I love certain classics, have a soft spot for all things Shakespeare (though his work is always best when seen on stage, rather than in print), and adore the Kushiel series by Jacqueline Carrey. The Mountain's Call series by Caitlin Brennan is brilliant and I loved The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brian. Jeffrey Deaver writes a stunning murder-mystery, and I swoon over the Wheel of Time series. I also loved Ken Follet's Pillars of the Earth (which goes hand in hand, I feel, with the Avalon series - they're nothing alike, but something about them makes them feel cut from the same cloth). I hold my degree in Anthropology with a focus in forensics, and there are several anthropological anthologies that are fascinating reads. Humans are the ultimate narcissists - what could be more interesting to read about than ourselves?
Favorite genre:
I gravitate to historical fiction, fantasy/sci-fi, and mystery, but that hardly acts as a filter for my literary selections.
Least favorite genre or things you stray away from:
I'll literally read the back of a shampoo bottle if that's all there is available, so I'm not sure I have a genre that I "stay away from". Very dry biographies or philosophical dissertations that trumpet political or religious zealotry tend to not hold my interest quite as powerfully, I suppose (the latter tends to just make make me angry, which in some cases, I concede, could be the point). Also, everyone should steer a wide path around "In the Wake of the Plague". It was awful. Seriously.
Favorite book quote:
To choose a favorite would be to choose a favorite book, so I'm not sure I can do this either (apparently, I have commitment issues). But, from Margaret Atwood's "A Handmaid's Tale", I love:
"We were the people who were not in the papers. We lived in the blank white spaces at the edges of print. It gave us more freedom. We lived in the gaps between the stories."
That one just always feels applicable to the world. And while I will admit to not being the biggest fan of Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter", I do love the quote:
"No man, for any considerable period, can wear one face to himself and another to the multitude, without finally getting bewildered as to which may be the true."
And for sheer fun, I love the one and only Shakespearean stage direction (from "A Winter's Tale"):
"Exit, pursued by a bear."
You know, I have to eat my words about a genre that I stay away from. This is one thing I don't read. I don't get much from reference books like this, only because I am more of a hands on learner and only tend to seek out advice when I'm really stuck, and even then, I usually ask another parent, or my son's doctor, rather than a book.
Favorite Children's Book:
Books were sacred in our house growing up. My dad always said he could turn down our requests for toys or candy, but he would never turn down buying us a book, as long as he was able. He read to us every night, so there wasn't really a "children's section" in our house. He had read me all of Tolkien by the time I was eight and the Narnia series by the time I was six. But I always had a soft spot for fairy tales. Granted, I liked the Grimm's version and stories like Giselle, but I was captivated by the elegant illustrations and the brief glimpses of magic in a not-so-fanciful context. I absorbed pretty much all things book as a kid, though my son is, as as yet, far to active to sit still for a story. I hope he becomes interested as he gets older, but I'm not pushing it yet.
What kind of reader are you? (e.g. "I hate reading", "I read all the time")
In case it wasn't obvious, I would classify myself as "avid" bordering on "she has a new book, we'll see her in 24 hours when she finishes it". I cannot fall asleep without having consumed at least two or three chapters of something, anything.

Favorite genre: Crime/Mystery/Psychological thriller
Least favorite genre or things you stray away from: Fantasy (dragons, vampires, etc), romance, and anything lighthearted hahahahaha.
Favorite book quote: Oh gosh...I can't think of one on the spot.
Pregnancy/Parenting/Baby book recommendations: I haven't read any of these yet, but I have Ina May's Guide to Childbirth at home that I haven't started yet.
Favorite Children's Book: As a really young child I loved the Little Golden Books, The Velveteen Rabbit and Courdaroy. When I got old enough for chapter books, I loved the whole Nancy Drew series (original, yellow hardbacks) and another book called The Phantom Tollbooth. I think my favorite that I still love today is The Chronicles of Narnia series.
What kind of reader are you? (e.g. "I hate reading", "I read all the time") I LOVE reading but I am extremely picky. If I'm literally not hooked - or at least interested - by the end of the first paragraph, I won't even give the book a second glance.

Oh gosh, SO many. The HP and Anne of Green Gables series come to mind. I'm a huge fan of Margaret Atwood (especially Handmaid's Tale) and Jodi Picoult (especially Small Great Things). Also Zadie Smith. I'm afraid if I start trying to list them I'll list too many. But the best book I've read in recent memory is A Little Life. Holy wow. That book will give you every emotion available.
Favorite genre:
Fiction
Least favorite genre or things you stray away from:
Space, romance, dry non-fiction

Harry Potter, Anne of Green Gables, Little House. Also Dr. Seuss's ABCs, Eloise at Christmastime, and The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes.
What kind of reader are you? (e.g. "I hate reading", "I read all the time")
I'm the daughter of a librarian so I grew up around books. I absolutely love reading.
This thread makes me so happy. I used to be such an avid reader, but lately it's been pop fiction, and I've definitely been missing out. And like @kat0607 I prefer to be sucked in right away. That's why I had so much trouble getting into The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo...and also why I haven't even tried to start the next one.

Favorite books: so many! A few from different genres....Harry Potter series, Cutting for Stone, I know why the caged bird sings, making faces, almost anything from Kelley Armstrong
Favorite Genre: depends on my mood- if things are hard at work I tend to stick to mysteries, romance and sci fi/ fantasy and avoid the more "heavy" literature and non fiction

Pregnancy/parenting book: I've only read what to expect when you're expecting.... it was ok
Favorite children's book: I'll love you forever, giving tree, the places you'll go
Type of reader- I was a voracious reader- going through 2 or so books a day. Now with my work schedule I'm limited to 2-3 a week. I have kindle unlimited to support my very expensive habit.
@ktewart and @chiquita928 I read the first Game of thrones book but got frustrated when they killed off the characters and when my husband told me it would get much worse I stopped. I agree with your sentiment of bonding with characters!
Almost anything by Stephen King, everything by Michael Crichton, F. Paul Wilson, Robogenesis and Robopocalypse, psycho-thrillers, James Patterson, Terry Pratchett

Some fantasy and sci-fi (I'm very picky about them), science and medical thrillers,

What kind of reader are you? (e.g. "I hate reading", "I read all the time")
I try to read as often as possible, it sparks ideas to use for my own writing.
Favorite book(s): One of my favorites is Murder on the Orient Express, by Agatha Christie. I picked it up one Sunday in high school and I don't think I moved from the sofa until I finished it. I also loved Cloud Atlas, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the Harry Potter series, the His Dark Materials trilogy, and the Giver series.
Favorite genre: All types of fiction, but my go-to is mysteries. Not the dark, gory mysteries, but the cozy, clever mysteries, like Agatha Christie and the Sherlock Holmes books and stories. I've also been loving Louise Penny's books - they're mysteries that take place in Canada, with the same detective and some of the same characters in each one. In addition to being fun mysteries, she does a great job of developing the characters and a sense of place, and I really want to visit Montreal and Quebec City now.
Least favorite genre or things you stray away from: I don't read sci-fi very often, but there are some exceptions - I really like Orson Scott Card's books (Ender's Game is great). I also don't read non-fiction that often, but again, there are some exceptions when I'm really interested in a topic.
Favorite book quote: I'm really bad at remembering quotes.
Pregnancy/Parenting/Baby book recommendations: I've been reading Mayo Clinic Guide to Pregnancy, Expecting Better, and What to Expect.
Favorite Children's Book: As a kid, I loved Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh and a Wrinkle in Time.
What kind of reader are you? (e.g. "I hate reading", "I read all the time") I read as much as possible. One of my happiest days was when I got a kindle and realized I could buy any book I wanted whenever I wanted without leaving my house! I spent a lot of money until I figured out how to get kindle books from the library.
