Ok, dumb FTM question... what size diapers do I need and how long are babies in each size? I know it will vary by baby, but any insight as to what I need to stock up on would be appreciated!
@MKRLTX 1s and 3s. Size 3s are the ones my DS stayed in the longest. Don't invest in size NB, many babies go straight to size 1 out of the womb, skipping NB altogether!
@MKRLTX, DD1 (weighed 9lbs) skipped right over NB diapers. I basically just used what NB diapers we received from the hospital and went right to size 1 for her. DD2/3 (6lb/7lbs) NBs for a few weeks. They're in size 1 for awhile if I recall.
I'll personally stock up on a few small packs of NBs, because most hospitals send you home with some, and order the large box of size 1 from Amazon of subscription.
DD was in NB diapers for MAYBE 2 weeks? She was 7lbs 7oz at birth but 10.5lbs at one month. We had to move her into size 4 diapers at 6 months (because she kept exploding poop out the back of the size 3's) and she is STILL in size 4 diapers a full year later. So for our money...size 4 was the most useful. We'll probably move her up to 5's briefly before she is (hopefully) potty trained.
@MKRLTX, my daughter was one of the rare ones who needed newborn diapers (she was 7lbs at birth, and just kinda petite all over), so I wouldn't invest in a huge box, but I would have some at home. We didn't and it was annoying to run to the store the first day.
We used NB diapers. DD was a peanut at birth. Just remember if you happen to buy to many of one size, many stores will let you exchange for the correct size!
I CD'ed my twins until we hit daycare but they were using NB diapers at the hospital... born at 7lb 2oz and 7lb 0.5 oz each. We had a non-so-pleasant issue with one of the boy's umbilical area not healing properly so I swapped him into NB disposables for a few days to provide that cutout and extra air/circulation before going back to CD for him. I would say my boys probably wouldn't have made it past 2 - 3 weeks in NB size diapers though.
My main caution though for going larger in diapers early on is to make sure those leg holes are tight enough... we'll all have out fair share of blowouts but... FTMs you've been warned!

Haha DD's thighs were HUGE. She blew out the back of her diapers frequently. And by "frequently" I mean "she never came home from daycare in the same outfit she went there in until she was 8+ months old and eating a decent amount of solid food." I did a lot of scrubbing of human feces out of onesies. her breastmilk poops were SO WATERY. Ugh it was gross. Can't wait to do it all again! Since this is the last kid, i'll probably be more willing to just throw away the really bad ones instead of trying to save them though...haha.
DD was 5lbs 13 oz at birth and we used NB diapers for about 2 months. She was in the first percentile for weight for a long time though. That having been said, IMO it's a lot less of a hassle to buy more NB diapers if need be, than it is to return them. The customer service line always seems to be so long everywhere.
DD was. 9.5 lb baby and we used newborns for about 2-3 weeks. We went thru 3 big boxes. I'd get one small box newborn and a couple size 1 to start off with
I got super excited when I read the name of the thread! back in 2013 amazon had this crazy amazing deal if you had prime and signed up for amazon mom and clipped a coupon. I believe I lucked out with 200+ size box of swaddlers for $5 each. We ended up using multiple emails (I'm horrible I know) and we got 4 boxes that were like total $160 for only $20. It spread like wildfire on fb and the deal ended quickly, a few of my friends just barely got a box. I wish they'd bring it back, so I can rob them blindly again lol!
