I'm in group "no family history and ate a ton of allergens while pregnant." My daughter had reactions to allergens in my BREASTMILK between 4-5 months old. I went on an elimination diet until I stopped listening to her pediatrician and took her to a pediatric allergist at 6 months old, after a reaction to hummus (the pediatrician told me to keep feeding it to her...and if I listened I could have killed my daughter)!
She was anaphylactic to peanuts, tree nuts, and sesame seeds.
After a bunch of tests, at age four, and a peanut challenge, we have reintroduced peanut butter.
She's still anaphylactic to tree nuts and sesame seeds, though. I will not be introducing allergens at home. No. Thank. You.
@semicolon I'm interested in your peanut challenge. I know of a doctor in the Detroit area (I'm in MI) that does the reintroduction of allergens (peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, soy, etc). A few friends have used his clinic with great success.
Did you go through a clinic or did you do your own?
@semicolon, are sesame seeds a common allergen for those with tree nut allergies? I've never heard of that.
DD is 16 months and I still haven't introduced peanuts because I'm just a nervous nellie (no family history of allergies). Our doctor is a little more old school and said there was no need until closer to 2, but I could try now if I want. After these stories, I don't know what to do!
My pedi's recommendation was more like that of @Elyse1384.
I have food allergies so I was banking on this kid showing symptoms like I had as my allergies worsened. I have minor food issues that came to light and got worse after college. Thankfully she doesn't seem to have any food allergies.
The only thing so far that she's allergic to is cats (just like me and the Mr). No big loss there...
