Bleeding and low lying placenta

So I went to the ER saturday morning after waking to having bright red blood in the toilet friday at 2:30 am. Lets just say I did not sleep one bit, I was shaking and so scared. I could only think I had to be miscarrying. Long story short baby was fine on ultrasound, a day ahead and no sign of bleeding besides saying I have a marginal or low lying placenta. I have another ultrasound for my anatomy in 2.5 weeks. Has anyone ever had this happen to them and everything be okay? The bleeding went to spotting and now none but of course im very worried every time I go to the bathroom. I will mention I was very active friday cleaning and preparing for a gathering. Thank you for any advice or stories in advance.

Re: Bleeding and low lying placenta

  • I had partial placenta previa with DD.  The placenta actually moves over time and often will move up and far enough away from the cervix.  The bleeding should hopefully slow or stop when the placenta isn't sitting on top of the cervix like that.  My OB had me take it easier than usual (eg no teaching karate for a bit) and listen more to my body if I've been on my feet long.  Good luck!

  • I haven't had bleeding, but I found out today at my anatomy scan that I have a low lying placenta. I was asked if I've had any bleeding and was told that if I do that this can cause it. Dr said it is nothing to worry about though and that as baby grows and uterus stretches that often times the placenta will move as well to not be so low lying. Unfortunately if it ends up blocking the cervix you are guaranteed to need a C section. Glad to hear your baby is doing fine!

Same as @Elyse1384. I had placenta previa with DD2. I had bleeding mainly after I pooped or strained too hard. As she mentioned, it moved over time and the bleeding resolved.
  • Thank you ladies so much, it truly just is nice when you know your not alone or others have had similar experiences!
  • I have no experience but just want to wish you positive thoughts!
  • I had placenta previa with my first pregnancy. I never experienced bleeding bc of it though. I did end up having a c section bc it was still too low for a vaginal delivery.  The way my dr described it was imagine your uterus as a balloon. If you put a dot on that balloon close to the bottom while its not inflated then you blow that balloon up the dot will slowly move up. The placenta does the same thing as you get further along in your pregnancy.  it helped me imagine what was going on in my body.  He also said that a vaginal birth with placenta previa is like going snorkling with no oxygen.  The placenta is the baby's life line and it's dangerous to do a regular birth bc the placenta would be delivered first resulting in no "oxygen" for the baby.  Hope that makes sense. I really liked the way he described it all to me. No technical terms but in a way I could understand. I'm sure your dr will keep a very close eye on it as you go through your pregnancy and they can advise on the type of birth you need to keep you and baby safe.  Hopefully everything goes smoothly from here on out for you.
  • I should also specify I will be having a c section either way with this baby, so this will not affect a change in that outcome. I just worry about the bleeding and everything turning out okay. :)
