Infertility

IVF Baby #1 - TTC Baby #2

After more than a year of TTC (trying to conceive) baby #1, and one miscarriage we went through IVF (in vitro fertilization) to conceive by now 19 month old son. I had been diagnosed with unexplained infertility. My husband and I have been now TTC (trying to conceive) baby #2 per recommendation from my OB/GYN. I had the idea that around 6 months of TTC (trying to conceive) we would go to back to our fertility doctor but I am hoping we can get pregnant naturally or with some mild intervention. We are going to see my OB/GYN tomorrow for some further recommendations or testing since we are in our 6 month of TTC.

While I realize its been only 6 months, I am now 35 as of November, and I have a 1 1/2 year old. Strangely the concern this time around hasn't been will and when will I get pregnant, its more so just when. I am so focused on the timing between two children, that I have let that stress me out more so that just trying to get pregnant in the first place.

Curious to hear stories of TTC (trying to conceive) baby #2 after fertility treatment for first, especially those with unexplained infertility. What makes sense as a good timing to see our fertility doctor again? Should we go at 6 months TTC, or wait it out a little longer? Having kids 2-3-4 years apart.. doesn't it really matter as long as there is another kid?

Re: IVF Baby #1 - TTC Baby #2

  • Hello and welcome! While I don't have any children (yet), I would have assumed that since you had to use a RE and IVF for the first child, that for the next time you would be able to go right back to it and not wait the 6-12 months?

I hope things work out for you soon and your stay here on this board is short and sweet! Good luck!

  • Thanks for the welcome. You are correct in that we wouldn't have to wait, but we decided that it wouldn't hurt to since I was able to get pregnant naturally once, although miscarried. And with unexplained infertility there is always a chance said by both by OB/GYN and RE...
  • Hi there! My daughter came naturally and in my mind I had the perfect age gap, have them 2.5-3 years apart. Turns out my daughter was luck and now we're turning to IVF. In hindsight I wish I hadn't stressed over the age space... at this point they'd be 4+ years apart but I no longer care, I just want to give her a sibling. I have two good friends who used IVF first time around only to be shocked when they fell pregnant naturally, where two others had to do IVF again the second time around. You know best if you want to take time, its great that you could start right away if you see an RE, I feel like the tests take forever so at least you'd be past that point!

  • You don't have my embryos left from your first IVF cycle? If you have embies on ice I would just do that instead of trying for 6 months.

    IUI #1 July/Aug 2016
IVF #1 Sep/Oct Microdose Lupron Protocol - IVF cancelled only 1 follicle
IVF #2 Feb/Mar Antagonist protocol w/estrogen priming - 0 eggs retrieved (empty follicle syndrome)
Donor Egg Cycle as soon as we find a match
  • If you're 35 then 6 months is usually the recommended time to see an RE. If you have frozen embryos from the first round of IVF I'd definitely just use those instead of trying naturally.
