IV Fluids

Has anyone become so dehydrated that they had to get IV fluids? I'm on day 4 of keeping little to no fluids down, and I can tell I'm crazy dehydrated. I'll call my OB when they open on two hours, but jm
so weak I can barely function. And here I thought I'd be done with this at 17 weeks!

  • No experience.  I begged my OB for fluids at 12wks but she said my urine didn't look "that dehydrated." Hope you feel better soon!

  • I've had IV fluids before but not during pregnancy. It is amazing how fast it re-hydrates you. It will probably come as a big relief to your body if they go that route. Hope you get some comfort soon!!

  • My OB recommended I go to the ER for fluids after just 2 days of food poisoning, so I would say you are past time! I opted not to, and still feel off almost a week later, so definitely go if you have the chance!! (the avg wait time at my ER is 8 hrs and I had a meeting in the morning that I could not miss)

Highly monitored internet and no cell service in the office, so I'm postin' and ghostin' while I'm workin'
  • My OB told me to based on how bad I was doing at 6w, they also prescribed Diclegis at that appointment...

Where I live they have IV places that are non-Rx and they have different cocktails/blends for vitamins, hydration, etc.

My OB actually preferred I go to one of those to keep me from being exposed to other illnesses in the ER/convenience for me... just book a time slot and go.

I soooo wish we had those places here! I would have paid out of pocket for it no problem.

  • I did at about ten weeks. I needed it desperately. Two liters and I needed every bit of it.  I was told not to mess around with dehydration.

  • My OB told me to go to the ER for IV fluids due to my fluid intake and frequent vomiting at 8 weeks. I waited two more days and then went in. It was expensive, but made me feel so much better and I was able to keep diclegis down and fluids down better afterward. Lucky that we're into the new year now so that our extra medical expenses will go toward our 2017 deductible which we'll probably meet with birth expenses. It took about 4 hours at the ER, but they ran labs and did an US bc I was only 8 weeks and they wanted to detect baby's HR.
  • I've been 4 times for fluids plus spent 8 days in the hospital hooked up to constant fluids and Meds due to nonstop vomiting (HG).  The fluids help but only for about 24 hours.  Are you on any medications to help control the vomiting?  I'm on 4 anti nausea Meds.  Between the Meds and finally being in my 2nd trimester, it is really the only way I've been able to get a little better.  I am now able to tolerate small amounts of liquid at a time.  If you are at a point of questioning whether to go in, you probably should.  Also, buying ketone strips at a drug store to test your urine is a great way to see if you are producing ketones and should go in.
  • @Waiting4Fred I have been pretty dehydrated this week, but it is my own fault for not drinking as much water when I am off work. That sounds so miserable and I hope you get some relief soon!
