Staying fit and healthy

Hi everyone! I thought this might be a great place to discuss how everyone is trying to stay physically active and healthy during pregnancy. Is anyone still running, taking yoga, actively trying to eat healthier, etc? How are you keeping energy levels up?
I myself am a super active person and I plan to continue running and hiking and staying active until the doctor tells me otherwise! I honestly believe it's helping me feel better this first trimester.

Re: Staying fit and healthy

  • So my path to health and wellness has been slow, but steady. I've struggled with my eating habits my whole life and in NO way ENJOY most physical activities. The activities I enjoy most are not ones I have the opportunity to do often. With that being said, I've been working on making healthy habits a consistent priority in my life. Now that I'm pregnant again, I want to kick it into the next gear.

The holidays have been ROUGH but I'm back home and getting back into my routines. My first pregnancy I was very sick so exercising and eating well was difficult. By the time I felt better I had no self control. This time I am feeling good and want to take advantage of it. This could potentially be my last pregnancy and I want to enjoy it!

The "plan" is to get on a supplement plan in the new year, make lots of smoothies to ensure I'm getting plenty of nutrients for myself and LO, and to walk, do yoga, and play at recess with my students as much as possible!

I am excited you started this thread @oriole2017 and hope it can be a place where I can hold myself accountable!
  • Thank you for starting this thread, @oriole2017! I am a huge weight gainer during pregnancy (60lbs and 50lbs for my two) and I am hoping to keep it more in check this time. I'm pretty active and eat pretty well most of the time, but pregnant me likes to splurge because, hey, I'm pregnant. It has made it a pain to get back to pre-baby weight. I'm hoping to stay somewhere closer to 30lbs this pregnancy by being conscious of my food choices and staying active the whole time.

Running with my last pregnancy didn't get uncomfortable until around 32 weeks, so I'm going to try to make it to around then this time too. After that, I'll switch to just the bike or stair stepper.

Do you think we should do a weekly health/fitness check in?

  • I'm a super active person, normally workout with weights/running 5 days a week.. I've been on pelvic rest though for first tri :disappointed: it's been killing my energy levels. I can't wait to be 13/14 weeks. Then I'll still take it easy due to past MC's. I can't even wait for elliptical lol I plan on doing more yoga this time around.

On Fridays there is supposed to be a weekly exercise/fitness check in already. So watch for that! I believe @britvahok is in charge of it
  • I struggle with exercising on a regular basis, but I'm going to try to go to the Y once a week. My Y has a prenatal fitness class I may also do if it works with my schedule.

  • I am going to do pregnancy fitness circuits from Pinterest, walking, and Zumba! I am overweight now by 20# so I am hoping that by exercising I will be able to manage my gain. I will also try to eat healthy for at least 2 meals w/healthy snacks! I am more focused on prepping my body for labor and listening to what my body needs. I'll be on the look out for Friday fitness check in as well!

  • I an avid yogi and already practiced the last 3.5 years and already eat pretty well although I still may indulge.  The last week I've had some pretty off days and haven't done yoga.  Because I'm spotting they don't want me to do arm balance, inversions, and asthangha, but said it was ok to do basic and a combo class.  I'm going to a basic class at the studio tonight.  Its been way too long.

I've noticed not doing yoga the last week i've been more tired.  it sucks.  sorry about first tri pelvic rest.  I'm on pelvic rest until I have no spotting for 2 weeks.  I can do basic yoga so I'm going to do that tonight at the studio.

  • I am normally also very active and eat super healthy. However During my first pregnancy I had a terrible time eating healthy because I was SO sick right through delivery. I ate whatever wouldnt make me sick. But I did manage to continue walking. I walked 6-10 miles 5 or more days a week until I was put on bed rest at 36 weeks. And I'll tell you I think it was a HUGE factor in my quick delivery. I delivered at 37 weeks (was induced) and I had a 2 hour labor start to finish.

So this time I'm going to try to do the same. I'm already very sick again. I cannot even fathom food so I'm eating whatever will sit right. Trying to walk a lot and get my water in.
  • @lyndshurt That sounds like a great plan. I hope you come up with something that works for your schedule and you stick to it :) Since you said you have struggled in the past, perhaps having a "diet" or workout buddy will help? They don't need to be on the same diet, obviously, but I'm sure this time of year there will be no shortage of people making resolutions to eat healthy and stay in shape. Pair up for success.

  • @kissthesky32 no problem! that's great that it wasn't until super late last pregnancy that it became uncomfortable to run. This is my first, so I wondered how long I would have, on average, until I got to that point. That's hopeful!

  • yoga takers - are you in a prenatal or basic class? can you do most of the stretches or are you limited b/c of the belly?

  • @oriole2017 - I've been practicing yoga religiously for 3.5 year.  I regularly do arm balance and inversions.  But now that I'm spotting they told me I can't and the struggle is very real!  I attended a basic class last night with zero issues.  I don't have much of a belly yet but as it gets bigger you can modify any pose.

  • I'm going to continue to cycle, cardio, yoga, and lift weights.  I'm cutting back on running and HIIT.  I also plan to do whole30 every other month.

  • @oriole2017 I actually just talked to my bestie who is getting married in April and we are set to be accountability partners :)

@Mama_Sass I would love to hear more about whole30! How long is the prep for most your meals? Do you do it alone or does your family do it with you?
  • I have been continuing to go to a kickboxing class 2 days a week, but I have been (irrationally) nervous about doing some of the exercises. I have my first doctor's appointment on Tuesday, so it will be good for me to hear if there are things I shouldn't be doing at the gym. I hope to continue to work out during pregnancy to avoid gaining too much weight!
  • I am a runner and also do Zumba, TRX, and weights. So far I have been continuing to exercise, although I have slowed down my running pace and distance and try not to push myself too hard.  I had some kind of cold or something over the holidays and had to take two weeks off of exercise--it has been so nice to get back into it this week!

  • I just do walks everyday. About 2 miles and get lots of water in. I eat low carb because I'm prone to GD. Overall just try and do something small everyday. I'm going to be looking into yoga while pregnant this time for loosening up my pelvic region and flexibility when birthing.
  • I was really active through most of my pregnancy with DD (running and yoga) and don't remember feeling nearly as sick and lazy as I do this time. I haven't been doing anything this time around and am so sick - which is a vicious cycle. :( Getting a new treadmill on Monday and hoping to make a change!!
  • I'm trying to keep up with my running because I have three races coming up, the last one in June (imma die). It's really hard to find the energy, but I wasn't active at all during my last pregnancy and gained 60 pounds that I still was working off. Hoping to avoid repeating that this time around.
  • I really struggle with food and exercise during pregnancy. Ive never had the best self control and when im pregnant all i want is carbs! I need to be better then last time though, seeing as im starting about 10lbs heavier then my previous pregnancy. Wish me luck!
