Sore throat (strep?) OTC soother?

Im pretty sure I have strep but I'm not going to my Drs until tomorrow. My throat is so raw and eating makes it worse. Is there anything OTC or natural you'd recommend that is safe to take to help sooth it?

Re: Sore throat (strep?) OTC soother?

  • Hot water with a lot of lemon and a tiny bit of honey has always helped me when sick.
  • Lime juice and honey works for me. I also like to mix hot water lime and honey.

  • Thank you @hjphillips and @neludelu I just sent my hubby to get a lemon and a lime bc I'm not sure which sounds better :)

  • Gargle with warm salt water as many times a day as you can stand it.  Works every time for me with throat issues although I don't know about with strep.  I was that kid that always had strep and even now as an adult I know when I've got it and I don't.  For some reason it really makes my whole body hurt, especially my joints when I have it now.  ***Gross*** but do you have puss pockets all over the back of your throat?
  • @Wearmi1 I was that kid too! My dad was a carrier so I got it often. My mom always knew when I was getting it bc she could smell it...isn't that so weird? I don't see any pockets or white, but it's very red and inflamed. I had a low grade fever earlier too and yep, my bones hurt. I've already been sick multiple times since finding out we were pregnant and I'm over it!

  • I have a head cold right now. For OTC stuff, my doctors list include any cough drop, any nose spray, Rubitussin, Sudafes, and Actifeid. I know those all won't be helpful for you, but maybe someone else can benefit as well
  • @LilLee11 My mom always said we had strep breath!
  • I read somewhere marshmallows are meant to be great for a sore throat.

    Ive never actually tried it.

I had to google this! It sounds like the gelatin helps coat your throat. I love marshmallows and really wish I had a bag bc I'd totally test it out haha!

  • I just went to the walk in clinic today for a strep swab. It came back negative...just viral. I'm cranking my humidifier at night, upping my water and I was told cough drops are fine.

Hot tea with lemon and honey as suggested has helped me.  I have a awful cold right now and really want tot take something bc I know it will turn into a sinus infection (colds always do for me). Hope you feel better soon.  Being pregnant and sick sucks!!

Eta:  it didn't show all of my post.TB and I aren't getting along today.
  • Hot Toddy minus the alcohol or gargling salt water.  Feel better!
  • I've been constantly sucking on ricola drops, the orange bag which is honey-herb... I'm right here with you but I think my throat issues are viral as DS2 was crying about his ears but turned out he has a very red throat/blisters but negative strep test per the urgent care doc this weekend and my throat is killing me right now... I'm sure I've got the same thing.
  • What's the treatment for strep during pregnancy?  Will they prescribe amoxicillin?  Asking because my DS was diagnosed today so I'm worried I'm next!
  • @mezalune yep, amoxicillin is category B so that's what they prescribed me

  • I have a cold and a sore throat and my pharmacist recommended cough drops that don't have menthol in them. I got Luden's. They definitely don't work like the good stuff but they do taste good. Hot water with lemon and honey has been saving me today!
