Weekly Randoms 12/12

Re: Weekly Randoms 12/12

  • I have a random STM question... I started this pregnancy about 15lbs over my ideal weight and I was wondering what you all found the most challenging when it came to gaining weight? Do pregnancy cravings get crazy? Do you start getting insanely hungry at a certain point? Is it the feeling huge and aches and pains causing more sitting than usual? I guess I am just really curious as to why the weight gain range for women seems so variable like 15 to 80lbs...
I am trying to eat a balanced diet to the best of my ability, but want to have some idea of the challenges ahead for staying close to the ideal weight gain range. Any input is appreciated and sorry if I sound completely ignorant to the topic. My research all leads me to "discuss with your  provider" or old threads where people question each other's weight gain, neither of which are helpful!

  • @MKRLTX I've only had one other pregnancy, but from what I can tell based on my friends, etc, all you can really do is try your best to eat healthy and try your best to be active, but every body does something different when pregnant.  I gained 28lbs with DD, and I was working out constantly - I kept up my pre-pregnancy schedule.  This time I don't work out as much because I don't have the time, so I'm just trying to keep it as close to before as possible, and to try to be reasonable about food.  The weight came off fairly easily last time so I hope it will be the same this time around.

That said, my very close friend regularly ran half and full marathons pre-pregnancy, and continued running until about her third tri, but gained like 80lbs.  Most of it was water and bloating and came off very quickly after she gave birth, but this is a woman who has never been out of shape in her life - she was a college athlete.  She was WORRIED.  But it worked out fine.  A lot of women lose weight, especially if they're ill in the first tri, and it turns out fine for them too.  Try not to stress about it.  What will be will be.  Just try not to use pregnancy as an excuse to eat pure garbage and sit on your butt all day if you can help it. ;-)

  • @MKRLTX, that's a hard one. I really didn't gain much weight with either pregnancy. I have friends who gained 50lbs for really no reason. Every woman's body handles being pregnant different.

For me, I make a conscience effort to not use pregnancy as an excuse to eat whatever I want, whenever I want and try to stay on a healthy diet. (soooo not saying that those who do gain weight do use pregnancy as an excuse to eat anything or everything!) I've never been a skinny person and work hard to stay in shape. I weigh myself regularly to help keep myself in check.

I'm also short, so as I get larger I get fuller, faster. Toward the end of pregnancy I can't each much in one sitting, making it easy to keep my weight down.

I had a lot more discomfort with DD2, but a pregnancy support belt helped enough that I was able to stay active.

I've been diagnosed with a SCH for this pregnancy and am currently on strict "take it easy" and "no gym" restrictions... so who knows what the future holds for me weight gain wise. I haven't been to the gym in 6 weeks.

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @MKRLTX with DS I gained about 40 lbs and that was with sitting on bed rest for 10 weeks (27-37 weeks). I never was overly concerned with my weight gain as long as I was eating various vegetables/fruit and healthy protein. Some bodies just tent to gain more than others, or not gain much at all.

Before I was hospitalized with DS I was with a midwife practice and she always told me "if you're craving it, your body needs it". Just don't go and eat an entire box of cookies 4 days a week. It's all about balance. Pregnancy isn't a free ticket to eat everything in sight, but it's also not a time to be overly concerned with your weight. Eat healthy for the most part, keep your body moving and you'll be a-ok.

I'm up 10 lbs from where I started with DS pregnancy but so far no weight gain with this pregnancy. Time will tell!

I gained 18 pounds with my first. I had a lot of food aversions (same this time) so only certain foods taste good to me. Luckily, the first time, it was mostly smoothies and iced water. This time my nausea is much worse and carbs seem to be the only thing that tame it (heathier ones do work though too like oatmeal or a nutrabar), but I don't always have them at my disposal and I just want the dry heaves to end before my students realize what is going on. The first time, I was also not as busy since I had no other kids so I could cook healthy meals. Now I chase a toddler so not as much meal prep time

  • MKRLTX Also, my last one was due in Sept so I had a lot of good weather to take long walks when I was in that 3-7 month range when I felt good. This one I am worried since I am going through the whole winter and taking long walks are not the best idea in icy PA winters.

  • I'm going to second what @BelhurstBride said Re: weight gain can be influenced with how your body responds to pregnancy.  Once I'm out of the first tri and can eat "normally" again (read: not throw up everywhere), I eat exactly the same (or less) than I would pre-pregnancy and continue my regular activity level.  Despite that fact, I gained exactly 40lb with both pregnancies!  Insanity.  Especially in the 2nd tri my body just takes off with weight gain despite a reduction in caloric intake due to terrible heartburn with both kiddos.  That said, I'm guessing that is just what my body needs to do or how it responds to pregnancy.  Holy fluid retention, but at least it comes off wicked fast.
  • Thank you all for the responses.. I guess my game plan is try to keep eating healthy and stay active, then whatever happens happens!
  • @MKRLTX Totally agree with previous posters, particularly @Elyse1384 - I think so much is just driven by "what your body needs", as well as just being smart about choices when it's not all about a craving. I started my 1st pregnancy about 20 lbs lighter than I am now, but was bordering on underweight for my height and gained ~40 lbs total.

I'll be intrigued to see what happens with this pregnancy - I'm currently down ~8 lbs from when I first got pregnant (thanks, nausea), and need to see what my ob says about weight gain. I'm at risk for a small baby / preterm labor, so anything I can do to keep this kid healthy from my end is going to need to trump any cravings!

  • I have to add this about every body being different when it comes to weight gain. With DD1 I ate for two, only worked out a little bit, and was going to college online so I was sitting a lot. DD 2 I was chasing a toddler, ate super healthy, worked out 3-5 days a week. I gained 45 lbs and 43 lbs. I actually cried to my dr because I didn't understand why I Was still gaining. So this time I'm taking the middle road, going to give in to my cravings more often but stay active. I know with breastfeeding and chasing after 3 kids the weight will come off.

Mom to Madison- 5 and Lillian 2....and now surprise baby #3!

My dr advised me to keep my weight gain around 25 lbs. It's my first time at this rodeo so I don't know what's gonna happen. I've lost over 10lbs so far from food aversion/nausea.

In other news, I'm so excited because DH and I agreed not to give each other Christmas gifts!!! I loathe shopping, especially right now.
  • @Assiram42 I didn't know you could make them private! I'm all over that! Guess I know what I'll be doing today.
  • I had an appointment last night with a new OB. It took her a while to find the heartbeat with the Doppler (it's there!) but after a while of her searching she said "Are you sure you're okay?" I wasn't worried initially but her asking that made trying to find it that much more nerve wracking. Like she thought I shouldn't be okay. After she found it she said "Sometimes it's hard to find because they are so little and moving." Maybe start with that!
  • Also, @Assiram42, I'm sorry about your awful week. I hope you are feeling better today and that your dad is able to have an uncomplicated and easy treatment for his cancer.
  • I've got my registry too!  it needs to be updated, but same thing.  Both grandmoms want to buy ALL THE THINGS right away, so better they know what i want at least!

@michaela0704 agree with you 100%!!  My in laws are not quite as bad as yours because hubby and i are the only ones with decent jobs, but they all still make me feel obligated to get gifts for everyone and their friggin dog!!! like I have seen you ONCE this year and wont see you at x-ms why do i gotta get you a gifT?????

@devow27 we do something similar with my dad's family, we do a gag gift exchange.  So like under $10 but its all stupid stuff that no one will ACTUALLY ever use and its funny that night, but i still feel like its a total waste of money!!  and i HATE the bump app... it logs me out EVERY single time i use it, so i don't bother.  it drives me nuts.  i do love the weekly progress part tho, its the best one i've found.

@LMMama omg!  they have no idea how the stuff they say affects people sometimes... NO You can't find the heartbeat of my unborn child i am NOT OK!!!!!  argh... glad everything was ok tho.
  • I woke up to really bad sciatic nerve pain and couldn't walk or put pressure on my left leg for a few hours.  It got a little better so I can walk but it still hurts.  I can't seem to stretch it out.  I had this sometimes with my son but it wasn't until the end of my pregnancy and usually went away pretty quickly.  I hope this goes away because I cannot deal with this until June! Might have to visit the chiropractor.
  • I got a doppler today and was just able to find my sweet girl's hb pretty quickly. I really needed that because my anxiety has been unkind lately.
I'm jealous! I kind of want one!
  • @JessyKV, physical therapy really helped with sciatic pain during my last pregnancy. You get a little mini massage and they teach you some stretches to do at home. May be covered by insurance, too. Feel better!

I might have to look into that! I've been doing stretches I found online.

If I was not already pregnant, this new Bruno Mars album would surely do the trick. These 90s sounding slow jams are straight up sexual.
