Freeze all instead of fresh transfer?

Hello everyone, so today I had my retrieval and I had 30 eggs!! I was pretty excited as that is the best number yet. Anyways my DR was really adamant about doing a freeze all instead of fresh, not because I have a chance of OHSS, but because he said that there have been studies that there is a better implantation rate with frozen then fresh? I have never heard of this and am really hesitant because of the poor quality of my last 3 IVFs eggs. Has anyone else ever heard of a freeze all?

Re: Freeze all instead of fresh transfer?

  • Wow, 30 eggs! That's great.  I haven't been told anything from my doctor on this, but I have definitely read on here of posters freezing everything and skipping the fresh transfer.  Basically giving their body a break.
  • Loading the player...
  • My RE does fresh transfers but I have heard that frozens can be better.  If anything I would say that it doesn't hurt to wait for you body to come down off all those stimulation drugs.

  • Mine prefer fresh because they think the thawing may be harmful to embryo. But I imagine yours has your best interests in heart
  • My clinic prefers freeze all cycles because frozen transfers + PGS testing = higher live birth rate. I think fresh transfers actually have a higher implantation rate but also a higher miscarriage rate than the FETs with PGS.

If your body doesn't go into OHSS and you're healthy, I see no reason to do frozen over fresh unless you're doing PGS testing. I personally would never put an embryo in my body that wasn't PGS tested first so it was FET or bust for me!

Yes, there are recent studies that frozen transfer have much higher chances of pregnancy (almost double in some studies). One of the clinics I visited does only frozen transfers because:

    - higher pregnancy rates with frozen embryos
    - uterus lining better the following month without all the crap hormones we put our bodies through
-some hormones still linger in the body for a month after, and may lead to a higher rate of birth defects
    - it allows time to do PGS testing, which decreases m/c significantly

Yes, in some cases if the lab is not careful some embryos don't survive the thawing, but if the clinic is good there shouldn't be a concern. Also, some embryos don't make it to day 5 to freeze, and for these particular ones some REs say it is better to implant right away because they have a better chance in the uterus than in vitro (although this chance is low). Other REs say if they don't make it to day 5 in lab they are not normal anyway (which I don't tend to believe due to success stories I read in this situation).

My office also does frozen transfers because of higher success rates and being able to do PGD testing. If they retrieved 30 eggs, it is probably good to give your body a break. I had 25 eggs retrieved and got OHSS and was miserable for two weeks after the transfer. I think it is good to give our bodies a break after our ovaries are in overdrive and hormones are raging!
    Good luck!!!
  • I agree worth @sberries, I'm not sure why they don't think you're at high risk for OHSS with that number of eggs.  I was crushed when we couldn't do a fresh because I developed OHSS ,  but do believe it was best to let my body recover.  I had 24 eggs,  did ICSI and ended up with 12 to freeze.  I assumed the next month would be plenty of time,  but it wasn't and now with another delay,  we are transferring 3 months later.  my body is back to "normal " and so glad we did freeze.

    Good luck!

  • We're doing a freeze-all based on our doctor's recommendation for our first IVF. Her reasoning was that she can get as many eggs as possible without worrying about my lining. We wanted to do PGD which can only be done with frozen transfers so that factors into it too.

  • Thanks everyone! We are scheduled for a day 5 transfer on Wednesday. I have zero signs or symptoms of OHSS. Out of the 30 eggs retrieved 9 were able to to be icsi and all 9 fertilized. As of right now they are all growing. Had I had any signs of OHSS I would have definetly froze them all! At last check my lining was 12
so I'm hoping this goes well on Wednesday. My past quality issues is what is holding me back from a freeze all.

  • Freeze all ended up being the best thing that ever happened to me!
Although they decided on it because I was at such high risk of OHSS but I think it is the reason I finally became pregnant for the first time ever! Our couple from France we choose sperm\egg bank in Belgium "First Egg Bank" and after solving some issues with documents, their courier brought us our ordered oocytes. It's very convenient like they have Courier service of frozen donor eggs, courier takes care about it during all trip to France. My gratitude to them is endless!
    Best of luck!
  • ●●●pregnancy mentioned●●●

First off, that's a great number! I can personally tell u my story about a freeze all cycle. ... bc thats what I just did,  my 4th attempt at ivf. Anyways,  we retrieved 20. Our if 20, 10 mature enough ti fertalize. Out of 10, 8 fertalized. We did the genetic testing,  therefore my dr did av freeze all cycle. At my clinic and I believe nationwide (usa) higher success rates are associated with frozen cycles . My dr said that's bc there's less your body needs to do to prepare for it.  Only your uterus is the focus.  The lining,  and your hormones.  Needless to say it worked,  because My 1st beta wad positive,  and today's 2nd beta my number was 283! So, that's what we did and it was successful!
  • My RE highly suggests a freeze all for same reasons. We will be doing PGS testing so we would do a freeze all anyway, but even if we forgo the testing, I think I would go ahead with the FET to hopefully give myself a better chance.
