Any vegan/vegetarian pregnant mamas due in July?

Hello!

I'm kerils, and I was just wondering if anyone else in this group is a vegan or vegetarian. I have been a vegan for 3 and a half years, and I've noticed some really interesting things with my appetite and what I want to eat since being pregnant. Just looking to see if there is anyone else!

Re: Any vegan/vegetarian pregnant mamas due in July?

  • I was a vegetarian before I got pregnant.  But my body is craving meat.  It's so so odd.   I am craving turkey burgers like crazy.   I'm listing to my body and eating and enjoying it.   I will go back to vegetarian after the pregnancy.  I just make sure the meat I eat is high quality and sustainably farmed.
  • I'm kind of craving everything. I think it's the convenience and comfort for me more than the food itself. Plus, I can't stand vegetables right now, so it's even harder. I probably would consider going back, but every time I've accidentally had something not vegan, I get sick to my stomach, so I can't imagine it would go well with morning sickness in full swing. Oh well. I'll just keep buying the mock things to satisfy myself and hope this passes soon!

  • I have been a vegetarian for just shy of 10 years now. I haven't really noticed any changes as if yet, but I'm dreading having a Phoebe moment (Friends, anyone?) and start craving meat. I don't think that will happen, but I over think everything. What changes are you noticing?

  • Before pregnancy, I would willfully opt for salads, whole foods, whole grains, and almost never have fake meats or processed foods, and rarely used or even much liked sauces. Pregnant is COMPLETELY different. I've been craving potato chips, pizza, soy chicken tastes amazing to me, basically any convenience, junk foods are all I want. I can't even think about vegetables, let alone smell most of them. I have to hide them in things to eat them. I also have wicked all day nausea, so I'm sure that isn't helping, and I'm hoping that once that goes away I will want my regular food again. I also used to love to cook, but now I just can't stay in the kitchen that long, adding to the convenience food need. Before the m/s set in, I was eating vegetables and fruits all day long, but now I can't stomach them.

  • I've been vegetarian for about 1.5 years. So far I haven't had any weird meat cravings. I'm mostly eating bread and plain things because of nausea. I managed to make a curry sweet potato soup tonight and was pretty proud of myself lol.  I am trying to up my fish intake to once a week to get omega 3s for baby.

  • @kerils Do you like (or can stomach) smoothies? Sometimes, I make strawberry banana or wild berry smoothies and hide spinach in them. I tend to eat the fake meats a couple of times a week, even before I was pregnant, but I try to use 'real' foods more. I'm sorry you are struggling, and I hope it gets better soon. I have heard that things get easier in the second trimester. Fingers crossed!

Also, as kind of an amusing side note, my home page on the mobile app had an article about being vegan and pregnant. Not a lot of new information, basically just, "Yes! You can be vegan and still get enough nutrition!" but I thought it interesting, given this thread appearing at the same time. Love!
