Healthy snack options?

I'm looking for healthy snack ideas from others. With my last pregnancy, I was verging on gestational diabetes, and I want to start off on the right foot this time.
I need to snack pretty much every hour, and I'm getting bored with my yogurt, pretzels, and Lara bars. Will you please share what's on your snack list?
(irrelevant comment: the more I write "snack", the stranger the word seems)

Re: Healthy snack options?

  • Apples in peanut butter, almonds, trail mix with nuts/raisins/candy

There's not much you can do to prevent GD, but the important thing for keeping your blood sugar in check is trying to work in protein as much as possible. Balance carbs and protein with each snack or meal
  • Loved egg and cheese on toast last pregnancy. Lots of protein, good fats and whole grains in that snack choice. Also stocked up those microwaveable veggie steamers bags from the frozen section. Ate alot of veggies and fresh fruits. Remember, the sugar in fresh fruits in good for you, and fruits high in water concentrate will help prevent stretch marks. By all means, hydrate by drinking water (avoid juice), but also eat your water by taking in plenty of fruits.

  • Cheese sticks (very portable), almond butter or natural peanut butter on apples or rice cakes, hard boiled eggs, hummus and carrots. As most have said the big thing is getting protein with every snack

  • I've been craving cheese and cashews!!
  • Last time I craved candy so much. I'm dealing this time by switching to tangerines and grapes. They still have sugar but significantly less plus all the vitamins and fiber is good for us. Chestnuts are a great snack too and popcorn. But for now I am mostly on saltines.

  • I like to eat peanut butter on a bagel, almonds, cheese sticks and mini babybel cheese, any kind of veggie, small portable fruits like berries or "cuties", grapes...
  • Peanut butter with apples is my go-to! I can't get enough. Also, cheese sticks and pretzels with humus!
  • Do you have pinterest?
  • @ashaw512  I don't. Though now that you mention that, I bet there's some great ideas there
  • Freeze bananas then put them in a blender with a little vanilla extract !!!! Just like ice cream.

Tons, and super easy too. My go to is apple slices with strawberries, blueberries, and kiwi. If I'm feeling festive I'll add it too fat free vanilla yogart with a little honey and granola. Well, now I'm hungry for it.
  • Thank you all so much for the ideas, and hopefully others found this helpful. I feel like my next few weeks are covered and I won't be bored  :)
Also, I'd forgotten about protein being so key with blood sugar levels. I remember the nutritionist my first go 'round suggesting I make an omelette for breakfast to start the day out right.
  • Does anyone else feel like their taste buds are pregnant?  My tastes have completely changed in the past few weeks.  DH keeps looking at me like I'm crazy everytime I request something I usually hate and refuse something I usually love.  He says "wow, the baby has already taken over ..."
  • @BabyBump2 I am also on the cashew and cheese train! I keep a bag of cashews in my purse. For cheese I love the little babybel cheese wheels. They are a perfect portion and protein packed. If you buy them in bulk at Costco you can get them super cheap. Also they are pasteurized so no need to worry about listeria.

@Manda95816 my taste buds are also doing crazy things. I have no interest in coffee whereas before I was pregnant drinking a travel mug of coffee on the way to work was the highlight of my morning. Also yesterday I ate pineapple with spicy mustard on it... so yeah, my taste buds are doing weird thing. Lol
  • @manda95816 totally.  Every morning before I was pregnant I had a bagel and peanut butter.  Peanut butter is now revolting.  My husband is super confused.
  • Lots of great ideas on here! I definitely took pictures of them on my phone so I can remember what they are next time I go shopping
