@Assiram42 I don't think its being overly sensitive (re: ptsd joke)...I get really annoyed when people joke that they are "soooo OCD" because they like things a certain way. It's not cute to almost get to work, then drive 30 minutes back home because you didn't check to be sure the refrigerator is closed enough times.
We just started Elf on the Shelf this year...not to watch behavior so much...more because there are only so many years that Christmas is magical to kids. I love how excited DS gets to find out what his elf has been doing all night! Maybe I'll feel differently toward the end of December haha!
My UO is...I don't mind Caillou! There have only been 2 episodes where I had to turn it off because of the obnoxiousness. One was where mommy and daddy were so loving and patient each time Caillou got out of bed...which was at least 50. Would absolutely not fly in this household!
I loathe our elf on the shelf because it's another thing on the to-do list but I love how much my kids love it. We literally just move it each night and they are happy with it. No story around it and no elaborate set-ups. We actually don't even start it until a few weeks before Christmas, too. It's a very short time that they believe in such silliness and I eat up their sweet innocence.

@JAGinMI I agree! Our elf doesn't do many crazy antics, but the kids love waking up to find him in a new location. I love seeing them filled with such amazement around Christmas time.

I tried Elf on the Shelf last year and my (then) 3 year old figured out it was me moving it almost right away even though she never saw me do it. This year she asked me if I was going to move the elf around again this year and I said no. No point if she knows it's me!!!

I really have nothing but contempt for Elf. Not for people that do it, cause you do you, but the whole idea is so dumb to me. It couldn't scream, "Commercialism!!" any louder if it tried.

@kdanjou your DD reminds me of my brother's oldest son years ago. They went to Disney when he was about 3.5. They asked him what he thought of meeting Mickey and everyone. He replied, "I think they are people in costumes." I don't think my brother has ever been so proud and my SIL so sad. He just isn't the kind of kid who can imagine things like that. He's very realistic. His little sister though, she has a pet dragon in her basement.
@LMMama we do a lot of present too but most are small. My parents are the type of people who will go to a craft fair and see something small that reminds them of us and buy it in March and save it until Christmas.

My UO: I hate most Christmas carols. I hate radio stations playing nothing but holiday music from Thanksgiving until Christmas. I hate going anywhere and hearing Christmas music has taken the place of regular Muzak for a month. HATE HATE HATE
But I felt weirdly defensive when a morning radio show blasted "Mary Did You Know" as being pompous and irritating...
This! My husband is a Christmas fanatic... if I would let him our Christmas decorations would've been up by Thanksgiving.
I really don't feel in the "Christmas spirit" this year. I don't want to buy anyone anything- I really couldn't care less if I got anything... I just want to focus on this baby and making sure that it is healthy and sticks around.
