Glucose Test

So I did my glucose test yesterday and found out this morning i am borderline :( They said i dont need to retake it yet, but they want to watch my urine to make sure I dont have any glucose show up in that. However, I am supposed to start watching my carbs, which is pretty much what I live on. So I thought this would be a great post to have people share their favorite low carb/carb free recipes, in case someone else gets in this situation too.

I think so. I got a call from the nurse line last time around. When is your next appointment? Maybe they'll let you know then.

Not for another week, but I'd assume they'd warn you to stop eating all the naughty foods pronto if its really bad for baby with GD,,,  how did your 3 hr go?
  • Best of luck everyone! I'm doing mine on Wednesday and I'm a little nervous. I did a 4 hr test when I was 17 because I was having fainting spells and whatnot. I had a weird, delayed insulin reaction where I spiked at 195 and dropped to 46. It was awful! I just hope I pass the first time around.

  • Just wanted to chime in, I had an appointment with my midwife today and she said that I had an choice to take the glucose test or not and I hadn't known this (I'm a FTM). I thought it was something that all pregnant women had to do, but maybe it depends where you live? (I'm in Ontario). I told her I'd like to not do it so we'll just keep going as usual. I do feel better knowing that I can be monitored in other ways.

I'm from Ontario too and it's pretty mandatory with my midwife. I mean you always have the right to refuse tests but to me it's a pretty important one. I had GD and I was on a very low carb diet, baby ended up with low blood sugar which is pretty common for GD but had it been undiagnosed it more than likely would have meant an NICU stay. I never had any signs of it either other than the glucose one hour test followed by the 2 hour, I would have never known I had it otherwise.

I have my test on Friday but probably won't have results in time for my next appointment. I don't have much hope considering my last experience so maybe a small miracle will happen and I'll pass it this time!
  • I had an appointment today and my doctor gave me the glucose test to take home with me.

I'm supposed to drink it before I head in to my next appointment and need to make sure to get there at least 15 minutes before an hour has elapsed.

Did anyone else get to take theirs home? I'm not complaining, but this seems a little bit odd to me.
  • my ob does it that way. they want you to take it like a half hour or so before the appointment. Saves time at least. This time though I have an ultrasound so I am to drink it right before that and then get the blood draw after/during my appointment. Baby girl's probably going to be in there doing back flips poor US lady.
  • @direwolfmini yes! I was able to take it home with me last pregnancy! Much more convenient and less time consuming!

Mine sent me home with the drink after my last appointment too.
  • @anonellis good to know...I am almost done with my 3 hour. Only one more blood draw left...I'm so hungry. Thankfully I have the day off so I can crash later if I feel weird....baby was bouncing all around my ute from all the sugar! Congrats for passing! FX I do too!
  • @anonellis thank you so much for that bit of advice! I've only ever taken a 1hr test and I'm scheduling my 3 hour for next week and trying to balance with DH work schedule etc.. probably just have him take the rest of the day off jic
  • My 3 hour GTT results were borderline so after discussing my results with the nurse and OB, I am going to follow a diet I am making up for myself (I am a dietitian/nutritionist so am familiar with carb counting etc) and we will retest in 4 weeks and see if it makes a difference. It will suck not eating tons of candy and cookies over Christmas but I am willing to do what I need to do to make sure baby and I are healthy. We will see what happens!!
  • Oh I forgot to add ZOODLES for everything!! :-)

    Paleo Thai Zoodle soup
    Zoodle Pad Thai
Zoodles with ground turkey tomatoe sauce or meatballs
Spiy zoodle shrimp bowl (with avacado and cucumber)

    Soo much yummmm!!!

  • @Spartanrd4  I'm sorry to hear that your test results weren't where you want them.  At least you're finding this out now instead of before thanksgiving?  And, I think you've earned the right to have whatever Christmas cookies/treats you want prepared especially for you and brought to the hospital in March

The on call nurse called me and gave me the news that my 1 hr was high so I should pay attention to my carbs and eat lots of protein but my other readings were fine. So I don't have GD yay! I am anemic though and I was with DD at this time too so I quasi-expected that.

    Yay!!
  • I got my GD results online yesterday (quicker than I thought) but according to 2 nurses and Google I PASSED my 2 hour test!! Haven't confirmed with my midwife yet but I'm pretty confident things look good. I had GD with my first pregnancy so I couldn't be happier that my numbers came back in normal range, I could literally cry I'm so happy.
So happy to hear!! Hoping there aren't ANY of us on here that deal with this!!
  • @kjd291 Thank you! I definitely hope not. I was convinced I would have GD again because I was told by my old OB and my GD doctor that it would likely come back for future pregnancies. Crossing my fingers for everyone!
  • On my appointment Friday, I had sugar in my urine. I have the 3hr glucose test in two weeks. Anyone have sugar in urine and NOT end up with GD?
  • I had mine done 3 days ago but still don't have any results because it goes to my midwife first and then she puts it into a portal that I can go online and view.  I really hope I passed!
  • Got the call this morning that I didn't pass the 1 hour, so I scheduled my 3 hour test for Thursday...hope I can pass that one!  Going low carb and lots of water until then

  • @ngcsugirl1112 sad to hear, wish you the best on your next test!
  • Does anyone know any doc-approved methods of handling the, erm, unpleasant post-glucola digestive side effects? It's been all afternoon and it's not letting up. Of course I thought to call my doc 5 minutes after their office closed...

  • Did anyone else feel ridiculously sick after drinking the glucola? I was sitting in the waiting room waiting to get my blood drawn and flirted between whether or not I was going to puke or pass out the entire time. I was nauseated, dizzy, sweaty, and just generally felt like death.

Luckily for me, I managed to wait to puke until AFTER they took my blood because I never want to go through that ever again.
  • @JustAnotherUsername16 I ended up feeling nauseous after my test but I did have a migraine before I even went in for the test so I don't know which part caused that. I've already gotten my results back and I was in the normal range so could have just been the migraine that did it for me.

  • @JustAnotherUsername16 YES.  I didn't throw up but I sure wanted to.  I failed, had to do the three hour (which involves even more glucose and made me even more sick) and passed that one -- but it was a much more miserable experience than I expected.  the drink didn't even taste that bad to me, but the side effects after were the worst.
