June 2017 Moms

Baby Gear for Christmas?

With Christmas right around the corner, are anyone else's parents pestering them about buying baby stuff as gifts? We just found out we're having a boy, so now both of our moms are ready to go shopping haha! It just feels so early to be buying things like car seats, plus this is our first so we don't even know what we want.

Is is there anything that's reasonable to be buying at this point? Maybe just nursery furniture? If you're already getting stuff, feel free to share what you're asking for so I can copy your list ;)

Re: Baby Gear for Christmas?

  • I'm pretty sure my in-laws are going to buy our crib and mattress for Christmas. I know my mil also bought a ton of clothes and some things off my Amazon wish list for him. I also asked for a Tula and she was asking my H what color/design I wanted. Oh and she wants me to register soon too so that she has an idea of other things to buy us.
  • DD was also a June baby, but later in June, and we wanted to tell our families in person so they didn't even know I was pregnant until we saw them at christmas...it think I was 14 weeks at that point.  parents just got us bigger shower gifts, and then for DDs first christmas, when she was 6 months old, each set of parents got us a convertible car seat.  6 month olds don't need much for christmas.  haha.

Our families will know before Christmas this time, but it's another girl and we're really mostly set aside from a double stroller that I haven't even decided on yet, so I expect maybe some clothes and that's it.

  • I say if people are willing to buy you gifts, let them. You can always keep them in storage until you're ready to set up. Baby stuff doesn't come cheap! If they're asking you to register, so they can buy what you prefer, I think that's fine too, you're only going to share the registry with those people who ask for it at this point.
  • What made you decide on a Tula as opposed to other carriers?
  • I'm willing to be adopted by anyone's parents or IL's that will buy me stuff.  ;)
  • My mother is ready to buy all that I will let her, however she is insistent that I will have a shower.  My only sibling lives 400+ miles away and will not have any more children. So, grandma really likes to do too much with her grandkids that are local. With our past, we are not in a hurry to purchase but once we know gender I am fine with anyone purchasing the travel system and clothing.  We still have most big things from DD that we can reuse (PnPs, swing, cloth diapers) and my mom always makes the crib bedding so she will be on me to select fabric.  I am buying, for myself, a glider rocker for Christmas.

Point of all the rambling is, if they want to buy it and all is well, why not? Let them treat you and baby!

  • My MIL has asked for some ideas that I need for baby.  I told her I need a toddler size Tula since DD still loves being worn and we do a lot of hiking.  Then I also threw on my list the double stroller and accessories, a couple crib sheets, a few lightweight sleepers since it will be a summer baby, and a few things to make DD's room into a big girl room before baby is here.

If anyone asks us what we need/want for Xmas I'm going to let them buy the accessories needed to convert our current stroller to a double.

i will also ask for more summer onsies since DD was a winter baby and most of the things she wore while I was on leave were borrowed

  • I purposely started a wishlist of things we need for this LO in hopes that we get some of it for Christmas.

I'm positive we got baby stuff the Christmas I was pregnant with DD1. (We didn't know about DD2 until after Christmas.)

  • @merrylea I said this is my last Christmas as me not a mom and I wanted things for me don't feel bad!
    Me: 22 DH: 27
    BFP: 9/29
  • Not at all...parents probably would have just given me the cash otherwise and man that would have been a lot more fun hahah!
  • I just finished my baby registry and posted it to a special F&F FB group for people who want to keep up with 2yo DD's growth. I figure, hey, if we get one person easing the burden, that's better than nothing. And now I have everything in one handy place so I know what we need to buy in a few months. I don't think it's too early at all. People are thinking about dishing out money at Christmas already, so why not?

Er, I should note that we're having twins. Otherwise I wouldn't have done a registry for a second kid.

    And my other love: writing
  • @sls I don't think there's harm in ever doing a registry for a second kid...I'm going to do one purely to get the completion discount so i can use it myself.  I just won't share it publicly unless people ask directly to have it. :-)

We're basically set aside from a double stroller and a second monitor anyway, so if our parents don't offer to cover those we'll use the discount and get them ourselves.

@delujm0 That's a really good point! I wasn't going to do a registry this time but now I remember about that helpful completion discount and the coupons!!! Yay!!!

We are doing a registry for #2 as well, mostly for the discount, but also so that grandparents will know what we need. A lot of the items on the registry are also for life with a 1-year-old and newborn! My mom bought DS's convertible car seat off of our registry on Cyber Monday. We also need a double stroller, double diaper bag, and a carrier (Tula or Lillebaby). DS HATED to be worn, but I think #2 will have to learn to be okay with it under the circumstances.

Edit it because it's apparently too early for me to make sense!

I don't know her answer, but I do know that Tulas are a very nice brand of baby carrier that can do multiple carries, and are very ergonomic for baby. I like my Beco, but my cousin swears by her Tulas. They also have great resale value.  ;)
  • @ladylolly89 I have the Lillebaby and I love it.  DD was very big so I couldn't wear her constantly (she weighed 20lbs at 6 months) but it was awesome for the applications that I used it in, like getting around the airport, etc.  I never learned how to wear it on my back because by the time she was old enough for that she really preferred the stroller.  I intend to use it a LOT for #2!

    -----------

Stuck in the box, but I agree with @hjphillips regarding Tulas.

I owned a Solly and a Tula with DD3 and I will buy the same again. Very easy to wear and use and great resale value. Lots of fun prints!
  • I decided on the Tula based on rave reviews from my sister. I've even worn my niece in the Tula and just loved the way it wore and felt. And the colors and prints are adorable! I plan on babywearing a lot and I wanted something that would hold up and I could use with a second baby.
  • I love my Lillebaby all season so much. I think it has the best elements of all the other carriers on the market. There is nothing I would change about it.

This is me. My family draws names and my mom called asking for ideas for my brother, who drew my name. I said I couldn't think of anything off the top of my head at the moment so she starts suggesting a carrier or something.

I didn't say this to her but I hope everything doesn't suddenly become about the baby now that I'm pregnant! I'm not just a mom. I'm still the same person I was before with interests and hobbies and cool things I like to do. And a carrier and all that stuff isn't really for me. Maternity clothes, I don't mind, because those are for me, but a crib is not a gift for me. Diapers (we're planning to do cloth) are not a gift for me. A carrier is not a gift for me. A car seat is not a gift for me. Those are for the baby and I kind of prefer those as shower or maaaaaybe Mother's Day gifts.

Of course, I'm not going to decline or make a stink if someone gets me something like that, but I certainly won't suggest it as a birthday or Christmas gift for me.

Nothing wrong with anyone doing that if they want, just not for me.

I feel the same way. I hated that as soon as I got married my inlaws started buying cookware, not even fun gadgets, just basic cooking stuff. Of course I was thankful but it made me feel like people forgot who I was before I was a wife.
