@meggyme I don't know if you're giving the Vitamin D supplement, but there is also an option of switching to the supplement with iron. I would definitely ask your ped before doing anything like that though, obviously. Our ped didn't mention anything about iron at all, even when we told her we were doing BLW, and I was really surprised she didn't. Especially after she pushed the Vitamin D in my hand at our 1 week appointment.
Edit: 1 week. That was so long ago. I'm kind of sad
We haven't been doing Vit D drops (since we were living in San Diego) but my doc just called today to add them since we're in Virginia now. Maybe tomorrow I'll call back to ask about vit D and iron.
Vitamin D drops? Never heard about those before. Maybe because I'm in Colorado and it's always sunny, I guess???
They're required in Quebec...especially in the winter since it's dark and gloomy.

That makes sense!!! Btw I have always wanted to go to Montreal, maybe one day when my kids are old enough to get dumped with grandma lol!

Turns out the ped was a step ahead of me and the drops are multivitamin, not just Vit d

This should probably go in FFFC, but I am awful at remembering to give my son the drops and we live in WI! Honestly this whole vitamin D thing is new since I was a kid... How many of us got rickets? Oh well I need to do better.

I forget more often than I care to admit! I'm trying to be better about it and make it part of thr bedtime routine.

I have seriously forgotten the last month or so. Oops!! Our ped just prescribed multivitamins with fluoride.. now to get the script filled!
Hi ladies, this is a dumb question but how do you know when your baby is ready to try foods that require chewing? I know you would start with soft food etc. but it seems to me even something really soft, baby could still choke on if she attempted to swallow it without chewing. This doesn't seem like the type of thing I want to do by trial and error...

So far my baby has only had purees.
You could probably transition one of two ways. Either give her something super soft in bite sized pieces, like raspberries, small pasta or carrots that have been steamed until you can easily squish them between your fingers. Or gradually introduce chunkier and chunkier purees. If foods are soft enough babies can gum them up to break them down so that they don't choke, so it's not like they're swallowing them whole.

So, yogurt on a dipper, not as bad as I feared it would be. I took one of the baby food spoons and filled it with yogurt and then just handed it to him. The first day was a bit of a mess as he needed to put his hand directly on the spoon end to feel and examine the yogurt first, but last night on day two he knew what it was and just took the spoon from me and fed himself. Only ended up with a slight yogurt beard from clipping his lip on the way into his mouth. Just in case you ladies were leery of or curious about about trying something of that texture, it can be done!

Oh that's good to know! I've been avoiding yoghurt for this reason
I got some of the Dannon Whole Milk Mixed Berry. It's recommended if you are going to pick from the regular yogurt section to find one that uses whole milk instead of 2% or reduced fat. There are also shelf stable containers of yogurt in the baby food isle at my grocery store that would probably be good, but I haven't looked at them more than just noticing that they are there

Charlotte can't have dairy and my husbands bummed out because one of his favorite things he did with our boys was share his morning yogurt. I've thought about buying her a yogurt made with something else but just haven't done it. She does like eggs with green chili for breakfast.

Cora has had some of my soy yogurt (I'm lactose intolerant, she can have whatever she wants). I mix it with puréed fruit to keep her from getting backed up.
Anyone have trouble with LO shoveling food in until they gag? I've started having to give food a piece or two at a time because she will just cram her mouth full, which makes mealtimes more labor intensive and less enjoyable.

Yeah but gagging is part of the learning process. Preston did it for like a week where he kept putting food in. We have him a few pieces at a time like 4-5 rather than 1-2 and eventually he slowed down. We also made sure it was extra mushy food in that time so that it was easier to swallow.
@meggyme Charlotte does that with her melts but that's about it. At dinner I just give Charlotte a little at a time, do you just put all the food on her tray? I have Charlotte's food on the table and then put a little on her tray at a time because she's realized the dogs want her food and she's started feeding them. She dumped a whole bowl of broccoli on the floor for them one night and that was my wake up call.
I think it might be because I've been cutting things up extra small (my mom is visiting and extra cautious about choking) so she can cram more small things in rather than one or two bigger things.
Usually I do a 5-6 pieces on her tray and let her go at her own pace, but I think with my mom spoon feeding her yogurt and handing her things off her plate that she's off her game. She had been doing really well, but puked after gagging a few times on bread the other day.

My mom had a hard time watching Charlotte eat in the early days of blw. She was on the edge of her chair worried Charlotte was going to choke. She was stressing me out and I had to reassure her it would be okay. I think it still makes her a little nervous but it's my third kid and she knows I'm going to do things how I want to do them. She tried to tell me how to deal with my oldest sons sensory issues when he was little and I said no I'm not doing it your way he's my child and I'm going with my gut. It was challenging in the moment but made our relationship stronger. Oh and I hope you don't having anymore puking! My youngest son had the most sensitive gag reflex till he was almost 4. He puked all the time, we had a no chip rule because they always set it off.
Definitely something I need to work on. It's tough when so many of the other ways I parent line up with hers. Also, this is the first time she's seen Jackie in 6 months, so I figured I just wouldn't make waves for the week she was visiting and go back after she leaves today. Hopefully that's the only reason for the shoveling.

Has anyone else experienced this or any advice please:
We have done BLW from 6.5 months and from about 8 months he really got the hang of it and was eating quite a bit. Now, at nearly 10 months he is chewing his food but not swallowing it. He doesn't seem to be in pain but I do think he has a tooth on the way. He is nursing lots more than usual presumably to make up for it.

Could he have a sore throat? Maybe swallowing hurts. We haven't experienced this, just my thoughts.

Yes possibly I didn't think of that. All 3 of us have been in and both me and husband have still got sore throats. Thank you!
