Mild cramping and speculum... they will inject a dye into you and look into your uterus using an ultrasound. I found it uncomfortable but not painful. Whole thing takes 5-10 minutes
Take some Advil or Tylenol before hand to help with the cramping. It was uncomfortable but not unbearable. Some ladies experience pain, especially if they have blocked tubes due to the pressure of the dye.
They don't use dye in sonohysterograms (SHG), that's for hysterosalpingograms (HSG).
I had a SHG, and the catheter placement is easy, much like a pap smear. They use an ultrasound to look at your ovaries. Then they fill your uterus with saline, which does cause a fair bit of cramping. They put a camera up so they can look inside your uterus, then they put a little bit of air into the uterus and follow it up each fallopian tube to make sure it's open. The whole procedure takes 3 minutes or less. Definitely take pain meds ahead of time, usually they will tell you how much to take. They cramping was painful, but very short.

Be prepared for some mild cramping (most common), but also be prepared for it to really hurt (uncommon, but better to not be surprised by it). Have someone there to give you a hug afterwards.
If it does hurt, it's very brief, and is over quickly (leaving you with just some dull soreness, totally manageable if you have ever dealt with menstrual cramps). So don't panic.
Me- 39 (turning 40 in April), TTC for the first time ever (since Jan 2015), low ovarian reserve
Married 3/14/14 to my wonderful wife, but her sperm count is rather low
TTC with frozen donor sperm and science
7 IUIs, 7 BFNs. 2 IVF attempts, both cancelled and converted to IUI, both BFNs. Decided that my tired old ovaries are ready to retire. Next step- reciprocal IVF, using my wife's eggs, my uterus! fresh 5 day transfer (2 embryos) 4/17/17- BFP! Identical twins "due" 1/2/17 (but anticipated arrival sometime December)
The build up and anxiety from thinking about it all is worse than the actual procedure. A little pinching that feels like a pap, and some cramping that feels like you have your period, then it's over. You'll do just fine!

You will do great! You will feel some pressure and cramping when they inject saline into the catheter. If it becomes painful don't be afraid to speak up. As it turns out my uterus was smaller than most so they injected the amount of saline they were used to injecting but then had to take some out. Good luck!!!
One thing to note is that they do the ultrasound part trans-vaginally! I know that seems 'obvious' but I had a friend recently go in for her first tests and was definitely taken by surprise.

Definitely what @klake42 said. Before my sonohysteragram i had read that it was like a pap smear, and not as bad as the HSG so I thought nothing of it...until i was in intense pain from cramping. The doctor thought I had several lesions, so he kept going over the same area that was causing cramps. After a few minutes he realized it was not a lesion, but a contraction, which i didn't realize you could see. The entire thing was pretty short though, and I would say that most people don't experience that, so don't be alarmed!

hey @carterh33, i just wanted to say good luck on thursday! I have to one too in a couple weeks. Let me know how it goes... I'm scared because my HSG was pretty uncomfortable (I got a little shakey/sweaty/almost fainted after it) so I'm hoping it's not as bad as that!!
@carterh33 - Take the ibuprofen, make sure you eat something to help your blood sugar & hydrate before hand in case you do cramp up. Depending on what they think could be wrong might say a bit more to whether or not the sono could be uncomfortable or more on the side of painful. I have endo, and like @Winnie81 my Sono sucked, I felt every push of saline and bad cramps after but my RE said that's pretty common with endo. Then there's my good friend who has unexplained IF and she said she felt nothing - literally like a Pap. If your tubes are a bit blocked you'll probably be more likely to cramp up after because they have to create pressure to see if they can get flow (they were able to determine I didn't need an HSG because I had flow on both sides, but the right side didn't happen easily!) All of it's temporary, whether it's just uncomfortable or painful. If you end up with cramps, try walking them out - that helped me. I'm sure you'll get through this like a rockstar!

It went well! Ovaries look good and no fibroids, polyps, or scarring. I'll start a medicated cycle next month (femara, HCG, prometrium, heparin). The only thing now that worries me is money. We only have infertility coverage if I have a diagnosis of infertility from my dr. I am seeing the dr for RPL and am afraid they won't diagnose me as infertile for insurance's sake and then not be covered
I've had 2! Second one was not great, my left tube is closed and they tried to use the pressure to break through it, it was like strong menstrual cramps. He offered to try to push it through if I could take the pain but I could only handle it for so long. So I am trying with one tube. Not a bad experience to be honest!
