GTKY: Dream Vacation

If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go?  Where is the furthest from home you've been Andy would you recommend it?

Re: GTKY: Dream Vacation

  • The place that tops my bucket list is Iceland!  We really wanted to go there for our honeymoon but didn't want to go in the winter.  Now, once our kids are older we are hoping to ditch them with grandparents and have a 'second' honeymoon.
We ended up going to Belize for our honeymoon.  It was a wicked vacation, there is so much to see and do there but it was a lot more expensive than we were expecting.  I would highly recommend going but do your research and don't stay at one hotel the whole time.  Definitely go see some ruins of you do make it!

  • Before I found out I was pregnant with our first, we were starting to plan a trip to Argentina - we were planning to Airbnb a little apartment in Buenos Aires, go to Mendoza for a few days and Tierra del Fuego for a few. It seems like a trip we could totally do as a family but with grandparents and friends to visit it's hard to find the time!

I'm in California so Europe is as far away as Japan for me I think (it takes the same amount of time by plane at least) but that said Vietnam felt pretty far away - seriously amazing place to visit for so many reasons but here are three: 1) THE FOOD, 2) Saigon population is 50% under 30, so the energy of the city is young and electric, 3) the juxtaposition of communist propaganda and the young, capitalism friendly city is really fascinating. (Hanoi feels way older and more communist) oh and throw in 4 for funsies: the French colonial architecture and culinary influences
  • I have been planning a trip to Fiji for the past 2 months for our anniversary in late May...but with this new development, I'm going to have to table that plan. It was definitely my dream trip. I think it will just be too far from home, and way too late in the pregnancy to do anything. I'm trying to figure out if we can make Hawaii or something happen maybe in January. I travel a lot for work, have a trip planned to go to CT for Christmas, and might have to fly to Manila for work before the end of the year as well. REALLY hoping for a nice trip before baby comes

  • I've been to Paris and northern France, and I would absolutely recommend it! The food...omg. And tons of museums and other things to see and do. My favorite was visiting Normandy. Standing on the cliffs was absolutely surreal.

H would love to go to New Zealand to see where the LOTR movies were filmed. He's a huge Tolkien fan! Other than that, we live in FL and would love to see a white Christmas. :)

  • I would really like to visit Australia and also Fiji or Bora Bora!

  • Well. I have been to Alaska which is the furthest and it is amazing. I would def recommend it to anyone thinking about visiting.

As for dream vacay. I don't really have one. Our next vacay will be back to my SO home town in Kenya probably a couple summers from now.
  • @MrsN092714 H and I have been to Iceland! It was, without a doubt, my favorite vacation and I would go back there in a second if I could. I wish that we could have stayed longer... we kind of booked the trip on a whim. If I could go back, I would definitely explore more of the country that we didn't see the first time around.

The farthest away from home that I've been is Argentina and Uruguay. I live in the northeastern US so this was a 12+ hour flight for me. @satsumasandlemons I visited Buenos Aires a few years ago and the food and culture were incredible!

I would love to visit Greece, India, and the Galapagos Islands at some point.
  • Love hearing about everyone's travels!

One of my dreams is to go to Australia and see the Great Barrier Reef.  I'm hoping it's still there by the time I get there...
H and I have also talked about going to Tanzania and hiking Mt Kilimanjaro.

Farthest away I've ever been is the Amazon rainforest in Ecuador.  It was amazing.  I can't imagine feeling more remote than that.

@spk112 I went to the Galapagos Islands in September!  Incredible wildlife.  You can get like 2 feet away from birds and iguanas and they don't run away.

I went to Thailand on a vacation and it was amazing.  By far the best food I've ever had abroad was in Seoul.  I couldn't get my skirt buttoned for work after my third night there I ate so much.  The clasp literally exploded the seam, a coworker was there to help sew me into my skirt luckily.  Amsterdam is another great place and would love to go there for Christmas markets again.  We went to the big island of Hawaii for a week in August, and that's my number one favorite island now (I lived on Oahu for several years).  I've been to much of Asia and Europe.  South America is our next great adventure once we have this baby.

I travel for work so it's hard to pick a favorite. I can say I do not care for the carribean.  Expensive, sweltering heat, but somehow the water was freezing (I admit Hawaii spoiled me with the warm water temps) and we were robbed in Jamaica by our tour guide.  Never again.
  • I studied abroad in Italy and explored a lot of central and northern Italy and just loved it. Also made it to Barcelona and Dublin on that trip which I really enjoyed as well. Plus as a PP said - Alaska is so gorgeous! We did a cruise + land vacation with my family when I graduated college (I'm the youngest) so we saw a lot of the state including Denali which was awesome.

Furthest I have been from home is probably Austria. DH and I met during an international band tour of Europe that went to France, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.

Trips I would love to do are a ton. I'd love to do an extended trip in Europe especially hitting up a lot of historical sites. Iceland sounds gorgeous as well. I think Japan is also up there on my list. DH and I are big Disney fans and I've heard Tokyo Disney is amazing along with the rest of the country. A good friend from college lives in Himeji so it'd be nice to see her as well.

  • My mother is from Thailand so I have been pretty far from 'home' often. I used to lived in Ireland and then I lived in Bangladesh for 9 months so I guess that would be the furthest.
Dh and I always talk about wanting to visit Kashmir as we hear is beautiful, and also Nepal. we are hoping to be able to do Iceland to see the Northern Lights maybe soon enough since it's closer and more realistic than Kashmir or Nepal.
  • If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go?  Where is the furthest from home you've been Andy would you recommend it?  I've always wanted to go to the mediterranean, Greece in particular.

The furthest I've been is to Canada. It was very very green and beautiful but we were not there long enough to really enjoy any of it. We were driving from Niagara Falls, through Canada, then down through Michigan and down to Indiana where I grew up. I'd love to go back one day, .

  • Dream vacation: call me crazy, but I would love to go to Antarctica some day!

Farthest I've been from home: Australia/New Zealand. Definitely recommend both--NZ is gorgeous.
  • Dream vacation: Bora Bora. I want to stay in an overwater bungalow!

Furthest Away: China. Spent 2 weeks touring around the country with my family. It was awesome but couldn't eat Chinese food for years afterwords. I was so sick of it!
  • @rjoys8 - my uncle and cousin did a cruise to Antarctica. They loved it
