Feeding Tips???

My LO is getting increasingly more interested in foods that we're eating and we were slow to the solid (non baby food) foods but we're all aboard now.

He is eating well currently both baby food still spoon fed but we're also trying to work on him feeding him self things other than num nums lol. The problem is i literally have to give him one tiny piece of food at a time or he hoovers it all in like we're never feeding him again. He had one minor choking scare a couple of weeks ago w/my niece feeding him toast (the little squirrel hides it in his cheeks so she thought he had swallowed it).

Does anyone have tips for helping baby learn to eat one piece at a time and then get another? He literally double fists and shovels it in until he can't fit another bite if I put more than one bite on his plate/tray.

It takes so long to feed him one bite of food at a time because he of course plays with it too so i'd like to be able to eat a warm meal sometime too (or will this never happen again? jk) Even when I feed him and try to make sure what he's got is gone and saw "AHHHH" he shrieks at me because he wants more!!!

Re: Feeding Tips???

  • Damien has been eating on his own some things since about six months. Even starting with just one thing he has gone to shoveling as much in his mouth as possible now. I've been trying to catch him and pull his hand from his mouth saying "no more until you eat that" or something along those lines. Some days it helps some days it doesn't. He only has four teeth (the front) so at times he uses his finger on the side to help chew but he typically does really well. In six months he's gagged a ton of times but has only actually choked 3 times.

  • Aiden does this too. We basically do what midge519 described, with occasional success. Aiden mostly has this trouble with grains and meat, so I give him a couple bites of those and a couple bites of veggies at the same time.
  • My daughter does the same thing. Plus, she has no teeth yet so I'm more concerned about her chewing abilities. I give her a couple pieces at a time, she shoves them in her mouth and signs for more and I just tell her no more until you finish what's in your mouth. I'm not sure she really understands what I'm saying but I think she's starting to get that she doesn't get more until her mouth is empty. Sometimes she even spits out what she has in her mouth so that I hand her more!
