Anyone experience bleeding?

Last night I started having bright red bleeding.   TMI alert: I have been quite constipated lately and was straining a little bit when I felt what I can only describe as a pop feeling in my uterus.  It didn't hurt, but it was odd.  When I went to wipe, I saw that I was bleeding.I tried not to freak out, and kept wiping to be sure it wasn't hemorrhoids, but it definitely wasn't.  After 5 minutes of continuing to wipe and get bright red blood, I freaked out.  I called my OB and left a message and in the meantime prepared myself to go to the hospital.  Being a FTM, I don't know what is considered "spotting"/normal or abnormal bleeding. My OB called back and I explained what happened, how I had a super emotional rough day the day before and how the previous week had been stressful with my DH on a business trip, my blood pressure had been high all week, and my anxiety worse the last week.  He told me it sounds like a cervical abrasion and nothing to do with the baby and to take today off of work to relax and keep my feet up. If it worsens, go to the hospital, if its still there in a.m. to go to the office to be checked, and to call him with any further questions or worries.  Within an hour and a half the bleeding completely stopped, but this morning I was still worried something was wrong.  I went in for an ultrasound today and baby is healthy, active, and growing perfectly!  I am SOOOOO glad it was nothing worse, but OMG what a scare.  My poor DH was more worried and upset than I was.  Once the bleeding stopped, I went to bed and was okay.  He stayed up alllllll night worrying and checking on me.  He has to come home from work today because he kept falling asleep.  I sent him a video of the ultrasound and he finally took a nap today.

Anyone else have experience with bleeding that isn't indicative of a problem or like to share your experience?  I've heard this can happen, but you just never think it's gonna be you.

  • That's so scary, @Nolegirl1185! I'm so thankful that both you and baby are okay.

In the first trimester I had a couple weeks of intermittent bright red spotting due to a sub- chorionic hematoma/hemorrhage.  I, too,  went in for an emergent ultrasound to verify that my baby was okay. Now I'm just shy of 19 weeks and doing well.

  • I'm so glad you're ok!!

I've never heard of anything like this but your story gave me hope.  I've been having a lot of cramps today that have me worried. I've emailed my midwives to see what they think but I hate not knowing.

  • I'm so sorry you went through that scare! That's so nerve wracking. I've had one experience with this baby that I was sure was another mc but turned out to be nothing. I have no idea what the cause was because I'm not sure what's normal either. But by the time I went in to my doc (who took me seriously because of previous mc) there was no bleeding indicated on ultrasound and it didn't come back after that. I can only assume it was a very sensitive cervix being irritated by the sudden growth of my uterus because the only bleeding I've had since has been after sex, which I know is normal.
  • @thecavfamily thank you!  Did I read that your body absorbed the hematoma?  It may have been someone else, but either way I'm glad you are okay as well!

@cafedisco  If I remember correctly...you are around 16 weeks?  I had constant light cramping for almost 2 weeks 15 and 16.  It wasn't severe, but it did have me a little worried.  Turns out that also is normal as your uterus is growing and pushing on your organs.  As soon as my cramping stopped, it was practically overnight that all of a sudden I had a bump!  Stay positve, as long as it's not severe cramping or bleeding along with cramping it should be normal.

@HGRich Thank you, it was definitely scary! We have wanted a baby for so long and now that I'm pregnant, I just couldn't even imagine a loss.  My heart goes out to those who have been through that!! I'm so glad your experience this time has also been "nothing".  Each time DH and I have had sex, my vagina is irritated feeling but not bleeding.  It feels the way my vagina/cervix feels now after last night.  I'm hoping that it goes away soon.  It's not painful or uncomfortable, but it's there.

  • I'm glad you're ok, how scary! I definitely would've been nervous about that too. I had some spotting in the first trimester with this one, dr wasn't too concerned because it did not last long but they weren't sure why it was happening. I had an ultrasound at 9w and baby was great so they told me not to worry. It may have just been irritation from uterus or something. I haven't had any spotting since then but it has definitely made me a little more nervous this time around.

  • Yes I have had bleeding with two pregnancies where everything turned out to be fine. It can be so scary though. Glad everything is ok with you and your LO. And it was definitely reassuring to go in for the ultrasound!

This pregnancy i had bright red bleeding with mild cramping very early on at about 6 weeks which turned out to be a vanishing twin. I went in for an ultrasound and there were two sacs but only one had a baby with a heartbeat. I'm a little over 18 weeks now with a very active baby girl.

My last pregnancy I had bright red bleeding at 12 weeks and then some brown spotting at 16 weeks. I don't exactly know why that had happened. They never really gave me a reason or a name for it (or I just can't remember) I'm guessing it was just a subchorionic hematoma. Anyway went in for an ultrasound for that time too and everything was fine. My daughter is now almost 4 years old.

I never thought bleeding was this common in pregnancy or that it would happen to me as my first pregnancy with my son went smoothly and I didn't have any bleeding scares. I guess you just never know!

  • @Nolegirl1185  I am SO GLAD that it was just a scare!!!!!  Must have been crazy scary... sounds like you dealt with it well though.  I have never heard of a cervical abrasion before.  So glad your baby is well and growing.

I never had bleeding this pregnancy... some cramping pre 15 weeks (none now) and some pains (think ligament pains).  I am worried about straining when going to the toilet, but they say it cannot hurt the baby.

    Keep well

My DH:  French guy, car fanatic, best husband ever.
Our baby boy:  Due on 17 April, currently 37 weeks.  I can't believe it - I made it to full term!!!!
Last measurement:  3150 gs at 37+1!  This is going to be a big baby :)
  • I had a sub chorionic hemotoma as well - starting at 5 weeks- and thought I was miscarrying. It was pretty large and I was put on modified bed rest for many weeks but then my body miraculously absorbed it. It was really scary and I wrote about it on the high risk board but now it seems to have cleared itself. Waiting to see the 20 week ultrasound for confirmation. So glad everything turned out okay! Sometimes these strange unexpected things happen and it's so hard because it is completely out of our control!
  • I had some spotting this morning after a BM. I'm hoping it was just from straining. It's definitely scary.
  • I can't thank you ladies enough for your replies!  It helps to have support, understanding, and women that have been through similar situations.  I am glad we are all doing well :)  Please reach out to me personally if you ever need someone to talk to!!

  • I had something similar to OP pretty must the entire first two tris with DS. My cervix was just really low (retroverted uterus, so when it grew and straightened up it dropped super low) and got irritated on EVERYTHING, so I was constantly bleeding bright red. Baby was happy and squirmy at every check up, but it was so nerve wracking to see so much blood all the time. Luckily, it hasn't happened with this one, so this worrywort of a momma can get some rest, haha.

  • @SnarkasaurusRex that sounds scary!  I'm glad that it hasn't happened this time!  Would I know by now if I also had a retroverted uterus? I had the regular pelvic at my first appointment, and 4 ultrasounds (not sure if you can even tell with those lol - FTM).

  • @nolegirl1185 You'd probably know by now? IDK. My OB knew from my first pelvic exam when I was 14 and the US tech commented on it at both of my dating scans (with DS and with this baby). I never really looked hugely pregnant since my uterus still sits back quite a bit...people thought I was joking when I went into the hospital for my induction with DS because they thought I was only 5 months. Even this time, I'm not showing yet at 18 weeks, but I can feel more pressure in my lower back.

  • @SnarkasaurusRex  thanks for the feedback!  I had my anatomy scan today and asked about placement of everything and they said it's all in it's proper place and size lol.
