Infertility

For those who had cancelled IVF

I'm trying to figure out where we go from here. My IVF has been cancelled because I only have 1 egg growing. I'm on the max dosage of drugs and started with 8 follicles. For those that have gone through this, what did you do? Did you try another round of IVF and retrieve a successful number of eggs? My clinic thinks there's no hope for me to do another IVF cycle but I just cannot accept it right now. We are converting to IUI and my husband wants me to focus on the IUI so doesn't want to talk about possible next steps. I'm seriously mourning my failure right now.

Re: For those who had cancelled IVF

  • I haven't started my first round of IVF yet so I can't offer much help at this point but I did just want to offer some support.

What your going through sounds incredibly painful and I'm so sorry for that. If you do need to convert to IUI I wish you the best of luck with it and hope that treatment is the answer for you.

  • I've had 2 cycle cancelled for different reasons. Please don't give up hope. Talking with your re may sway him to try different protocols. Some poor responders do better with EPP while others do better with an antagonist protocol while others find success with a natural cycle. It is hard to think about, but it might take a couple of cycles before you find the right protocol for you. Hang in there.

  • @Kp214 thank you. I know my body maybe didn't respond to such an aggressive protocol - I'm very sensitive. I wonder if it's better to go "low and slow"

i knew something was was wrong on Thursday when I went to acupuncture. It was extremely painful and that never happened. I also was having severe cramping yesterday.

Obviously I don't want to discount the IUI but I want to know there's something I can do if that doesn't work.

  • I had two cycles cancelled. My RE never gave up hope though. I didn't respond well to the meds at first. We used Gonal-f with the first few cycles that cancelled and with the cycle we only got 2 embryos that failed. My last cycle he switched me to Follistim and changed all the dosages of meds and I responded a lot better. Everyone said the Follistim and Gonal-f are pretty much the same but I responded differently. I also started taking Co Q10, vitamin E, fish oil, and flax seed oil.  I stopped drinking caffeine completely. I don't know if any of this helped but I got 4 embryos and we are planning for FET in December.

    TTC for 8 years.
Started in 2008 with timed intercourse, ovulation testing, no official monitoring.
OB-GYN recommended Clomid and timed intercourse, attempted for 6 straight months.
First surgery June 2009 (OB-GYN): diagnosed with stage 4 endometriosis and large hydrosalpinx on right tube.
Second surgery (July 2009, RE performed this): Right tube had to be removed, lots of adhesions removed.
Attempted "trying on our own" as per RE recommendations, unsuccessful 5-6 months.
HSG performed December 2009: left tube open.
February 2010: started Femara and timed intercourse, attempted 6 months, no BFPs.
Took a break for a while.
January 2011: started IUI process, ovaries never properly responded to medications, 6 failed attempts, never actually completed an IUI.
Took 2012-2014 off due to depression and frustration (side note: did complete grad school to become a nurse practitioner- great distraction).
2015: started seeing RE again, went through tons of testing and HSG, left tube now blocked, only option is IVF.
September 2015: Started first official IVF cycle, cancelled in October due to large cyst on left ovary.
October 2015: started on birth control for 2 months.
December 2015: attempted to start another IVF cycle, cysts on both ovaries on initial ultrasound, left was huge, cancelled to aspirated cyst.
January 2016: Cyst back, surgery for ex-lap, cyst and adhesions removed.
March 2016: Attempted second IVF cycle, estrogen way too high, cyst back, cancelled again.
April 2016: Third attempted IVF cycle, 7 eggs retrieved, 2 mature (but not great) embryos made to fresh transfer, neither implanted.
May-Sept 2016: Break to regain sanity.
Sept-Oct 2016: Attempted fourth IVF cycle, very successful, cyst still on left but we ignored. 7 mature "great looking" eggs retrieved, 4 mature embryos made it to day 5 transfer. Transfer aborted due to large amount of endometriosis fluid in uterus.
FET of 2 embryos completed on 12/12/16.

  • @mandasand I am so sorry you are in this situation! I've had 2 cancelled cycles so understand the confusion you're feeling right now. My first cycle was with 150gonal f and when I didn't respond they thought I had "sleepy ovaries." We did IVF originally due to male factor infertility, however when I still didn't respond well on 450 iu of Gonal f I was cancelled and my FSH/AMH was retested. My FSH came back high and compounded with my husbands infertility we have decided to take some time off and move forward with embryo adoption in the new year. My poor response was something I never expected so I know how devastated you must feel. I do know some women that have found success naturally after starting CoQ-10 and Royal Jelly supplements so I would definitely recommend you try that! Good luck with your IUI, I'll be thinking of you!
  • I know we are on the oct/nov board together, but just wanted to reach out here. I know how you are feeling and it's the worst to not be able to even try :0( I seriously just cried on my couch for like a day straight after my cancellation, so mourn all you need to. I really agree with others that may this was just a bad month and/or they need to try a different protocol. I know the clinic doesn't seem open to try again and it would cost a lot more to go elsewhere, but hopefully you could convince them for one more shot. Did any of the IuIS give you a better follie count? My personal best was with a natural start and then low does of follistim for my last IUI, so maybe they would be willing to try a natural start? Thinking of you and wishing I could do more to help!

  • @JamieH2000 thank you for your support. Thanks to everyone here for the support!!

When I did the IUI in July I was on 100u Gonal-F and had 3 follies. I did a natural start with IVF but was on bcp on and off for 3 months prior (no more than 5 days each time), which really messed me up I think.

My husband was in the Air Force for 21 years as a cop/investigator/interrogater and is now in law school. He's magic at convincing/arguing so he's going to make his best effort to get us another round at IVF if the IUI fails. It's the best game plan we have right now.

  • @msandasand I've had a couple of cycles cancelled or converted for various reasons.  I've found that changing up the protocol I'm using has helped and then sometimes, I've just had bad cycles that seem to be flukes.  I'm considering a low stimulation cycle which in someone like me with AMh seems counterproductive but sometimes less eggs that are better quality have a better shot.  Don't give up hope.  Maybe this follicle that you've got is a sticker.  Also, never feel bad about thinking about next steps.  Sometimes thinking about the next step is the way I get through the hard situations when I'm worried that things are going to fail.
