June 2017 Moms

"Advanced Maternal Age" mamas, anybody interested in a weekly check-in?

It looks like there's a fair number of 35+ mamas, so I was wondering if we wanted to check in. I know we're going to have a lot of additional testing and monitoring coming up.

I have to admit, the "AMA" tag still stings a tiny bit.... dangit, 38 isn't old!!  :p

  • I turn 35 toward the beginning of my 2nd tri. I haven't seen my OB yet (I go 11/8) and don't yet know if she's going to consider me AMA.

She's pretty laid back and this will be my third child, so I'm hoping not.

  • @belhurstbride I think my office considers you AMA for the whole pregnancy if you will be 35 on your due date.  I'm infinitely straddling the line with this one...based on my calculation my due date will be about 2-3 days before I turn 35.  I don't know how hardcore my doctor will be about it.  As much as I'd love my insurance to cover NIPT testing, I really don't want to have to go to all of the extra appointments.  Ugh.

If there is an AMA check in, i'll join if my doctor is considering me AMA. :-)

  • I'm in too!

We started TTC #1 at 33, but that didn't pan out. I turned 35 two days before conception. :)

  • I'm 36. I imagine that will mean I 'qualify' for hte early screenings but I doubt more else will change since it's number 4, and I see midwives who are low intervention, including prenatal.

i missed it by a month last time

    11/18/16 missed m/c 9w1

    08/03/17 no hb 8w

  • I would participate! I will be 36 at delivery. When I saw the midwife when I was pregnant over the summer, she completely blew off 35 being any issue. She said the issues seem to actually begin more like 40. Whew! As far as early screening being offered, we didn't cover that topic so I am not sure.

  • I will be 36. I haven't had my appt yet but we discussed being AMA during my last pregnancy. I didn't make it passed 8weeks with that one.  But she did give me the option for testing and all that. I turned it down then and will again. She is extremely laid back and was cool with it.
  • I'm down for an AMA check in.  I was AMA with my son -- I conceived at 34 and delivered at 35.  I'm high risk for other reasons, so I would have had the extra app'ts and u/s even if I had been 34.
  • I'd like an AMA check-in!  I'll be 36 two weeks after due date.

I chose my OB 7+ years ago, before there was an influx of MWs in our area. I chose her because she's very MW-like, and in my experience, she's proven her reputation to follow the most up to date research. (For example, she happily allowed me to go to 42 weeks with DD2, who ended up coming on her own right at 42 weeks.) It's the reason I haven't bothered to switch to a MW.

I brought up AMA at my annual last year and she said, as a PP mentioned, that 35 isn't a magic age for concerns and she doesn't only use age when making that determination. Until I actually get to see her I'm optimistically keeping my fingers crossed.

  • I'm down!  I'm 36 and this is my first pregnancy. Ever.  The more I read, the more scared I get!   I did discuss with the doctor while we were ttgp my concerns, and as others have said, she indicated that 35 isn't some magical number.  We do plan on getting genetic testing, mostly because DH wants to know EVERYTHING about this LO before it makes its debut!

  • Sure!  I'll be 37 when the baby is due.  :)
  • Thank you for suggesting this. I'm 43 and was 37 when DD was born.  There was a lot of extra stuff at the end but  I felt at that point everything would be fine. It was the middle that was nerve wrecking. Also, the nurse seemed shocked that I had an amnio and would again.   As someone else said this pregnancy is so much more exhausting.
  • I'm 37. So far no extra testing based on age, but I do have to see a high risk doc due to being on bedrest for a large part of my previous pregnancy.

  • Yes. I'm 35 and will be when baby comes. this is also my first pregnancy.
  • Sure! I just turned 36 a couple of weeks ago. My attending OB from my pregnancy with DD would have moved right to the AMA label for this pregnancy, but my MW doesn't make the determination strictly based upon age.

My sister was 40 with her last DD and had all the testing done. It was a nightmare. She had some possible markers come back and had to wait more than two weeks for her follow-up testing. That came back fine, but there was a fear lingering over the rest of her pregnancy. I  dont think I could handle that stress. I'll probably decline the testing

Ugh, I made the mistake of Googling "ttc over 35" when we started to ttc and I seriously regretted it. It made me SO worried. I am choosing to focus on all of the perfectly normal and healthy pregnancies I have personally witnessed in women 35+!

The story about your sister is exactly why I don't think I can do the testing.  It would be so upsetting to go any amount of time thinking something was wrong with the baby. I declined the testing for both of my kids but I am feeling like they might encourage it more this time.

  • I'm 38 and will be one month shy of 39 when baby #3 is born! I'm in! This community has been so much calmer and saner, I think I will stay! For sure! ;p
  • Hi ladies! I'm down.  Will be almost 41 when this one is born!

  • I am 35 and will be 36 when I deliver. I was high risk with my first due to a variety of reasons so already prepared myself to be high risk this time. I get to see my baby a lot at least :-) My OB also said age doesn't always matter so I am keeping that in mind.
