I'm going to pull out the instructions, but has anybody used their infant carseat (we have the SafeSeat) without a base? We're flying to FL next month and all the extra bags, etc. are adding up cost-wise and my friend said she's flying to visit her parents and just not using a base.
Re: Using carseat without base?
The base is NOT required with our Graco Snugride, it works just fine without the base. Unless the manufacturer says it's required to meet federal regulations, the seat can be used with or without the base.
No, the base is NOT required - check out your car seat's manual.
My sister didn't bring a base last year when we went to FL with her kids and it was great - just a bit of a pain to buckle the seat in every time, but I'd rather do that than drag the base through the airport.
We are planning a trip to FL this year together and I won't be bringing my base either - her kids are now in convertible seats so it's not an issue for her anymore.
I'm not aware of any carseat where the base is required; which one do you have? It certainly isn't for mine (Graco Snugride). It is at least as safe to use mine without the base, the base only exists to make it easier to put the baby in and out. Having done it both ways, I would definitely NOT take the base; it's nearly as easy to just buckle the seat in.
No, it does not depend on the type of car. It may depend on the type of carseat, though as I said I don't know of any in which it is required. Your carseat manual will tell you if it is or not.
The base is not required, it's just more convenient.
mine has to have the base, didn't realize this when we bought it. Evenflo Eurotrek
If it wasn't required I wouldn't take it.
not all bases are required.
All infant carriers except the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio and the Evenflo Embrace can be used without their base. (The Peg Perego Primo Viaggio SIP can be used without its base)That's seriously a pain. It's such a racket too; it basically forces you to buy at least one extra base because how much of a pain is it to transfer bases between cars. Ugh.
She probably has the Evenflo one that requires the base. Or her car seat tech may be a big fat liar
No it's not, just look in the manual. We use our snugride in our second car without the base all the time.
