Pregnant after 35

Intro - an over 40 surprise...

Hi Ladies,  I am very early on in this one,  just had the BFP on Sat. a.M.  to find out what I thought was perimenopause is a pregnancy and I cried not happly tears.  We thought our family was done. 3 kids ages 6, 4 and 2.    Just wondering there is anyone else here in a similar situation?   I am feeling terrible ungrateful and selfish as I know other ladies go through a lot to get pregnant and I feel horrible that I am not excited at all like I was with our others. I will be fine with this eventually, it is just going to take awhile to adjust...  thanks for letting me put this out there.  Have only talked to my husband so far.

  • Hi Veronica, I'm in almost the same boat, just minus two kids :) I'll be 40 in two months, and had a positive pregnancy test a couple of days ago. We have an almost-5-year-old, and were really happy being the parents of an "only". This was totally unexpected and I've been going back and forth on how I hope it turns out. I had a miscarriage before having my child, so I was never able to fully relax during that pregnancy. Now add AMA, and I'm pretty nervous!
  • Good luck!  I had an early ultrasound this a.M. and all looks good. Only one babe, thank goodness, and good heart rate.  Guess this is the real deal.  Still not feeling excited but it is more real now and unfortunately morning sickness has started to kick in.

  • Congratulations! I really do understand about the "not excited" part though. When you know how much energy it takes just to get through the baby part of this, not to mention all the rest, it's hard to think about starting over AGAIN.

That's great you were able to get in to the doctor so quickly. I was only able to talk with my doctor's nurse - she's new, so we had to review my records over the phone. She didn't see any reason why I'd want my HcG #'s tested. I explained that it was for my own peace of mind, and that also, I'd been prescribed progesterone supplements with my successful pregnancy. She didn't see a need for that either! I asked her to talk with my doctor and get back with me. My first appointment isn't until December 8, so I guess I'll be in suspense until then.
  • I'd had some spotting my first few weeks which is when I was able to get the early ultrasound and I'm am fortunate that our family Dr. can generally see us quite quickly.  I don't see the OB until 12 weeks though on Dec 9th so we'll be able to compare notes. Although I don't have the date yet I'll have a 12 week untasound around then too (performed elaewhere).

  • Thankfully, the nurse talked with my doctor and called me yesterday. The new plan is to run betas, and once they reach over 1,000, we'll do a transvaginal ultrasound to rule out ectopic. My first betas yesterday were 626, which seems to fall in the average range for where I'm at, but we'll see what Saturday's numbers are. I had a subchorionic hematoma (SCH) with my daughter, so was deemed high risk - between that and my age at the time, my doctor had me seeing a perinatologist. I never expected to be going through all these worries and tests again! It feels a little unreal.
  • Good to hear that they are seeing you now

  • I was a week late Friday evening and trying to convince my husband it was peri-menopause.  Then the smell of something made me incredibly nauseous so he went and bought a test.  Immediately positive.  I also cried not happy tears for a few days and felt horrible/guilty.  Today is my first day NOT crying unhappy tears.  We were DONE!  Our kids are 7 and 11.

Next step is waiting for my first appointment (11/08) to set aside fears of twins.  I already feel slight hardening above my pubic bone and my pants are tight.
