Let's talk sleep training...

Anyone else in the same boat as us?  My now 1 year old (as of this Sunday) has become a horrible sleeper.  I'm debating trying the cry it out method as all other methods haven't worked.  We've rocked, soothed, massaged, sang, co-slept...you name it.  Obviously I don't want to give him a life long scar from crying for hours...but I want to try the Ferber method.  3-5 minute intervals and limited comforting (pats on the back, head rubs, etc).  I've also never put him down in his crib awake before...is it too much to start this?  Looking for some tips...of course I will be asking his doctor at his one year visit next week but really sleep depraved and want to know if sleep training has worked for other mamas.  All other forms of sleeping training tips also welcome!

  • We haven't done sleep training with this LO, bUT we used Ferber method with my daughter. it was rough listening to her cry for an hour at times. but we kept with it and stayed consistent. It took a few days but worked with her. Good luck!

  • We used Ferber for our daughter when she was around 9 months old. It worked in 3 days. First night was 45 minutes of torture, then 20 the second night then 7 the third night. You have to stay consistent. It's ok to get him drowsy first but make sure he goes to bed still awake. Our girl sleeps for about 12 hrs at night now (on non daycare days). It's worth a shot, but definitely discuss it with his pedi first
  • I did this with my son when he was four months. Since then he has been sleeping 12 hours at a time at night. He goes down awake and I hear him upstairs talking to himself for about 5-10 minutes before he's asleep.
  • Just wanted to say I am so with you!  T is a TERRIBLE sleeper.  I've thought about the CIO but can't bring myself to do it.  We just started giving him a big bowl of oatmeal before bed.   Even if we ate dinner less than an hour before and it seems to have helped a bit!  He's been at the very least staying in his own crib until 3-4am.
    Good luck!

  • My SO and I did a the CIO starting a 6mo. We do the same routine for her for naps and bedtime. the last of the routine is singing the same two songs while rocking her with her blankie and then putting her down awake to sleep with her noise machine on. We give her ten minutes and of she is still crying we go in and do the last part again and repeat until she falls asleep. Took a week for us.

The only difference that people usually disagree with is the picking up part. My husband and decided it was what our daughter needed. Now we didn't turned on the lights or look her in the eyes cause that got her more energized but picking her up comfort her.
