Infertility

PIO shots..

I have always done my shots in the evening before bed. My husband worked random hours and it worked out for us to do it later at night.
His hours changed and are 9-5 sooo I'm debating doing morning shots, we leave for work at the same time.

When do you do your shots? Any reason why?

Re: PIO shots..

  • I haven't started my pio yet, but on my schedule it tells me to take them in the morning. I take my Lupron and estradiol at night. Not sure why it says am though.
  • I had to do my pio shots in the morning and at night. I found that the left hip I did in the morning was less sore because I was moving around throughout the day. My right hip that I did at night was often more sore because I didn't move around as much in the evening. Good luck!
  • Loading the player...
  • My RE had us do my PIO in the AM. I believe it was so that my movement throughout the day would help the PIO circulate and I wouldn't end up with knots and such.

  • @Colleen0516 I'm glad you brought this up.  I'll be taking PIO for the first time starting this weekend (pending my Friday monitoring appt goes as planned) and have been wondering why people take it at different times of day and if it mattered.  I guess I'll see what my clinic says, but am hoping evening is fine.  DH leaves for work around 6 AM while I am working out, so I don't want to have to mess with it that early... I am not a morning person and usually need every spare minute I can get haha.

  • I've always had to do my PIO at night, no clue why but that's what the nurse tells me to do lol! I think maybe since they usually call later in the afternoon with results and instructions they make adjustments for that night? I usually did it about a half hour before bed when I was getting everything ready for the next morning anyway and would walk around with an ice pack in the elastic of my pants for 5-10 min and then DH had the shot ready and did it.
  • We were given the option of morning or evening, and we chose morning. The main reason we chose to do them in the morning is because we didn't want the injection to mess with any evening plans we might have... like if we go out to dinner, go to a wedding, etc. Each morning at 7am is super easy for us, and I do think that moving around throughout the day helps limit muscle pain from the injection. Also, FYI, if you end up pregnant, you are likely going to be doing PIO until you are about 10 weeks along, so it's important to pick a time that will really work in your schedule (if given the option)!

  • You know, i didn't even think to ask the doctor when she wanted me doing them- I just always did them at night. My instructions say, pick a time and be consistent (my nurse told me there is a little flex time) so we always picked night.
But, we decided to switch it up this round and we started morning shots; 1st one today!! (who smiles over PIO lol)
So, now I'm in my 2 week wait!

  • We were told to do them at night and we switch sides every night. I did notice that the particular side we do it on will be sore the next day. Example last night was right side and today my right butt is sore! Anyone else notice that?

    1st IUI 05/05/16 Letrozole 7.5 mg CD 3-11 + Ovidrel = BFN
    2nd cycle on Letrozole 7.5 mg CD 3-11 + TI = BFN
3rd cycle on Letrozole but did our 2nd IUI on 07/01/16. 10 mg CD 3-11 + Ovidrel = BFN
Onto IVF! Started Lupron on 09/24. Added Gonal F and hcg injections 09/26...... Trigger 10/07. EggRetrieval 10/09. Starting PIO, Estrace, and Medrol 10/10/16. Transferred 2 "strong/beautiful" embryos 10/14/16. Beta 10/28/16 = 998 mIU/mL = BFP with one baby, but miscarried at 9w5d.
D&C on 12/06/17 and started taking BCPs 01/10/17 for the next IVF Cycle, which officially began stims on 02/18/17.
Fast Forward: we got 4 fertilized embryos from that cycle. Transferred one fresh, but it did not stick, so we have 3 frozen embryos currently. Went in to the fertility clinic in July to talk about a FET of one of those three frozen embryos, but a new fibroid was discovered, and I was not cleared to do the transfer until I had fibroid removal surgery.
08/11/17 had a mini-laparotomy / myomectomy to remove 6 fibroids, largest sized were the size of golf-balls! Once we were cleared to go about our normal lives (sex!) I got pregnant NATURALLY but it was a chemical pregnancy. The very next month we had another BFP and here we are now with a baby on the way! A TOTAL AND COMPLETE MIRACLE!

I get that occasionally, but not every time, and only on my left side for some reason. Usually I'm fine after the shot and the next day, but my left side will sometimes ache a little. I often wonder what is going on over there! Sometimes I think we should do the right side two days in a row to give my left side a break!

We just did training with our nurse for PIOs and she said you can totally do that, if one side is really sore you can give it a break for a couple days.
  • I take my meds at night.  I divide my belly into 4 sections and rotate each night.  Now I have to start the cetrotide so i'm starting to use my thighs for those.  These are all subQ injections thankfully.

  • We were told to do the injection in the morning and use a heating pad. I sit at work so they said I had to make sure and get up and move around frequently throughout the day. The nurses said that it is more effective with movement and heat.

  • @elisam511 Its 100% normal to be sore on the side you did your shot. Some spots are more sensitive than other, so it varies. Working the oil into the muscle usually helps prevent it, but not always. Is started doing morning shots, and the one i did at 7:30 is already achey an hour later. But i will walk it out throughout the day.
