Pregnant after IF

Do I have to keep seeing the RE during early pregnancy?

is there a reason to keep seeing the RE during early pregnancy? I went through all of the infertility testing and consultations, then decided to take a few months off and focus on acupuncture. And I got pregnant. I've been to my RE three times now for betas and they said they'd call and schedule an early ultrasound, then see me through 10 weeks. But I feel my OB will do an early ultrasound, can't I just go through him? I'm already on progesterone suppositories. And I don't love my RE, but absolutely adore my OB. So any reason not to go ahead and make the switch?

Re: Do I have to keep seeing the RE during early pregnancy?

  • No reason to stay. As I did my IVF in Denmark but lived in Norway I right away got transferred to my OB. I only did my 8 week ultrasound at the infertility clinic in Norway as it was a private clinic and I could pre-book.
I stopped taking progesterone on week 10 without any additional checks as I got considered 'normal' pregnancy from the moment I got pregnant.
My OB did however read up to IVF to make sure he was up to date, but I didn't needed any additional checks.
So check with your OB if (s)he feels comfortable to follow you up and then listen to your gut I would say.

  • I'm glad I stayed with my RE because at my first OB visit they just listened for heartbeat. Seeing the baby at the RE's office was such a comfort. But do what you feel is right for you!

  • Your RE can't force you to stay with them, especially if you got pregnant on your own. If you don't like them, feel free to leave. Just keep in mind that your RE may do weekly ultrasounds until 10 weeks, and it is highly unlikely your OB will do more than one before a 12 week NT scan.

  • Actually, my OB will do weekly. He did when I had a SCH and subsequent loss with my last pregnancy. I called and talked to his nurse, so she's talking to him to see what he prefers. Thanks for the feedback!

  • I would just make whatever decision works best for you, especially if you didn't get pregnant on a treatment cycle. I wish I could have stayed with my RE forever! That's amazing that you have such a generous OB to do such frequent ultrasounds. Good luck to you.
  • I wish I had love my RE. We just didn't connect. My OB is the complete opposite.
